Morning and early afternoon programs

I enjoy listening to air talk especially during the time of COVID-19 they provided expert information sometimes a bit of humor but always in the interest of best listeners the variety of topics well done and informative
The program Where interviews are done with basically to host are insightful and provide people with insights Into the interviewers lives professional experiences and their personal beliefs I would like to see interviews done by spiritual individuals discussing their faith from different Relgis backgrounds whether they be Buddhist, eastern Christian, Muslim, indigenous to see how they use their face to interact with the world of today

Meh. I miss the old and the betas were great

The new has a nice look to it, BUT … functionally we really miss the rewind and other time controls. Also, it might still be there somewhere, but I haven’t yet found where to set my favorites. That’s extra important when driving we need to be able to quickly pick one of 6 or 8 favorites without scrolling through pages of alphabetically arranged show icons.

This version of the app has photos (totally unnecessary!); the previous version used to keep track of where I was in a podcast, so I could go back a few hours or days later, and listen from the point I left off — which was great and super useful

Was a 5, is a 3, rated 2 for breaking good thing

It’s no surprise that LAist waited until just after a big fundraiser to turn the best public radio app I’d seen into crippleware. I wonder how many donors feel suckered.
On top of that: I don’t know if Science Friday has cut down to two days a week of programming, but you’ve cut down to only offering the Thursday and Friday episodes. If this was your decision, put it back! If this was *not* your decision, perhaps you should put up some sort of disclaimer so that you don’t earn the scorn of SciFri fans like me!

Just because you can (update)…

…doesn’t mean you should.
The “New and improved” app just isn’t. I’ve lost my favorites and can’t see the schedule. The sleep timer only works for live casts and there isn’t any dark-mode (that I can find).

New app works horribly

I love LAist but my goodness the new app is terrible. Most chose, like this American life and radio lab, won’t even load, and I hate the new format where it’s hard to listen to entire programs like weekend edition Saturday. App update = harder to find shows.

I really miss the daily schedule of shows; now to find my daily listens I need to scroll down what feels like a presentation worthy of the wooden square blocks for learning children. If it has the option to sort by preferences or at least sort alphabetically-please let me know! Perhaps the ~option~ to view with smaller “icons” and ~option~ to view like a list would be nice for those who liked the small list the daily schedule (that didn’t require scrolling)? I do still appreciate the LAist app a lot…I regularly listen to a bunch of shows on my schedule; it is a beautiful thing!

App used to be SO much better

What I don’t understand is that this app used to be able to cache the livestream. The user could pause, rewind and fast-forward to catch up, so we *know* it’s possible. This functionality disappeared around the pandemic (when it was still the KPCC app.) Why torture those of us who are information junkies (and pay $100s to LAist) by taking this functionality away? Is it so you could pump every restart with a contributor’s ‘ad’ (which, coincidentally, got more aggressive around the time the caching functionality disappeared and the app became prone to crashing..?) Please tell us this isn’t a ‘cash grab’ effort by a PUBLIC radio affiliate, gone wrong?! As an end-user who misses content constantly because of app crashes, I can tell you it has the opposite effect: having to listen to the same sponsorship ‘ad’ before you can get back to the content you are missing simply gives one a negative association with that contributor statement. Please bring *back* caching functionality!

Version 4.5.5

Barely functional

Most of the time when I bring it up in CarPlay it is a blank screen with nothing to play. Then it pauses when the gps announces a turn, but take waaayyy too long to play again. I’ve taken to just listening on the radio with extremely poor reception in Santa Monica going over the 405 pass. But better than the awful app. I used to be able to as Siri to play kpcc and that worked great. Unfortunately Siri constantly mis-hears LAist and I am forced to use my phone or the CarPlay screen while driving. Not ideal and, as I wrote above, barely functional.

LAist shows bias in programming is complete

As a true lover of KPCC, and a member, I am boggled and forlorn over this station’s decision to excommunicate surrounding areas from their importance. Their radio signal covers much of Orange, Riverside, and even some San Bernardino Counties. They have attempted to keep the news broad enough to cover these areas. Now, with this new branding (which was so unnecessary), they’ve undertaken a move similar to the Angels by casting themselves as only for LA. Why on earth would you degrade and bias yourself so??

2022 Updated Review

Since my last review, I feel the app has improved slightly, with the addition of more podcasts and frequent news updates. Unfortunately, the livestream and streaming of archived shows is still problematic. The app doesn’t keep your place if you get a call or have to switch audio apps temporarily. The feed crashes regularly, and the app just resets randomly unless you’re listening uninterrupted, and even that crashes sporadically. There hasn’t been much improvement to this app over the last several years, which is very disappointing. I love KPCC, but I can pull up a radio app and get better more consistent audio streaming than this app has ever had. Why this app hasn’t been fixed, I have no idea.

Version 4.3.4
2018-08-12

The old app was way better than this. This is not usable anymore.

The old app had a few issues, but none of them were deal breakers. This new version is a huge step backward and has major dealbreakers. I live in Europe, and continue to support NPR through KPCC, in particular because I use the app to keep up with SoCal and with NPR. I absolutely need to be able to jumps around stories, since I have to listen to different shows to catch all the stories on a completely different time frame. With the old app this was very easy to do. I could jump back and forth between ATC and Morning Edition or weekend Edition, and just skip the stories that NPR submitted that were repeated. This is impossible with the new version. Sometimes I would have to leave a story before it ended, and the old app remembered where I left off. This is impossible in the new version. I quite simply cannot use the new version, and I just don’t see any kind of response from KPCC on the multiple complains about this. Are you not listening? Or do you not care? Either way, my time supporting KPCC will be cut short if this isn’t fixed soon. Sound petty? If this were your only way of listening to the radio station you love, you wouldn’t find it so.

New UI Needs some help.

I’m happy that this update fixed a bug with pausing and restarting the stream when using maps, but the UI needs a lot of help. The previous UI worked fine, but this tries to mimic the music app and fails. There’s not enough contrast to make lists readable and all the text and detail seems reduced.
Most of the problems I have (always) had are with program selection. I’d still like a favorites list since I usually only listen to about 5-6 programs fanatically. I’d like a faster way to get to the content I’m interested in.
UPDATE: after more than week of use, I find the app more and more frustrating. I’m a KPCC supporter, but this update may push me towards other NPR streaming options.

Old version wasn’t perfect, but this version takes out all the good stuff.

The old version wasn’t perfect, but it was better than this one. Pause doesn’t work if I leave the app, it will play from live if I try to play from outside of the app.
Also bring back titles and descriptions of each segment within the show. And let me skip segments altogether without having to move the time scroller all the way to the end and wait for the last 3 seconds to load, play, then wait for the next segment to load. Give back the option to choose segments. In the old version you’d open Morning Edition for example and it would list all of the segments with titles, times, and dates, giving me the option to skip the first 5 if I wanted to hear about something specific or if my time was limited. That feature is gone and it’s so sad. I might actually switch to another app like NPR bc this is so frustrating. You had a good thing going, why take away the good stuff?
I still love you KPCC, just fix this.
SampleInAJulius
Version 4.0

Never pause if you don’t want to go live

It doesn’t hold a pause if you go out of the app. So if you need to pause while you take a call or whatever it’ll start live instead of where you were.
Edit: Also, I understand its regular radio but Morning Edition repeats. I would love to have the option to hear the stories from the night before. I only really have the availability to listen until 11 and the noon and 6 PM hours always sound interesting. It would be great to explore previously aired portions. (Like maybe put the hours next to the program names in the side bar; also does the side bar have ALL the prior segments?)
Edit 2: OMG thank you for this new swipe left. Maybe it was there before. Maybe not. I just accidentally found it and it’s awesome and exactly what I want. Pause is the only issue I have now.

Please, please, please fix this app!

This app drives me nuts! I love listening to KPCC, but the app randomly shuts off or rewinds or skips back and forth, and I end up missing bits and pieces that I want to hear. Sometimes it gets stuck repeating the same 30 seconds, and it makes me want to scream. I updated my phone in the hopes that would fix it, but it's not me, KPCC, it's you. I really thought it was my phone because I couldn't believe that KPCC would tolerate such a shoddy app that is so far below the quality we've become accustomed to from the station. We don't have a radio in our home, so the app is the only way I can access KPCC, and it frustrates me to no end when it cuts off in the middle of the news or an important story. As a stay-at-home mom, it's important to me to have a connection to what's happening in the world outside my kitchen, and I've come to rely on KPCC for that. I can't sit at the computer and read the news all day and TV news is a joke that I don't want my small children to see, so having a working app helps keep me in the loop and makes me feel like a relatively intelligent adult. Could you please update the app and fix the bugs so I don't have to resort to getting my news from the covers of the magazines in the checkout line?

Freezes if interrupted

On my iPhone 6, it works fine except if I get any audio alerts such as an incoming text message or voice call, the KPCC app stops and won't resume when I hit the |> play icon. This also sometimes happens if I'm walking outdoors and the phone senses a wifi signal (I've learned to turn off Wifi when leaving my house). The only way to restart listening is by closing the app, going back to the phone's home screen, and reopening the app. It's a nuisance. Also, sometimes when streaming a past episode of ALL THINGS CONSIDERED it replays the same story over and over and over again in stead of playing the next news segment. But when it works correctly, it's a great convenience, to be able to listen to past episodes or to rewind a live streaming show to play from the beginning.

form over function unfortunately

The update is aesthetically pleasing but what happened to all the great functions and ease of use? Seems like they sacrificed looks for practicallity and it really is a shame. I don't understand why they took away many functions (volume control, ability to rewind a bit instead of starting from the beginning, etc). Also the app itself is very finnicky and prone to simply closing when trying to playback certain programs. It is a shame as the app was really my source of listening and now with it basically defunct, I listen to about 10% of what I used to due to all the technical issues. Please upgrade this upgrade to fix the bugs or re-instate the old version!

Update renders app unusable

Count me as one more dissatisfied updater, due to the impossibly poor playback in the current version. I do not miss any of the old features that got removed, and I do like some of the new features and the overhauled "look" that were introduced in this version (and I like that the app finally plays nice with the media controls in the control center and lock screen). But the main purpose of this app is to stream KPCC, which I am not able to do with this new version due to playback issues. I would even tolerate some skipping, as long as the stream kept playing, but playback stops very frequently and often does not start again until the app is "quit" out of background and relaunched.

The new KPCC app looks beautiful, but suffers greatly when it comes to practical use. Most evenings, I like to catch up on shows that I missed. I used to be able to control the playback -- if I missed something, I could "rewind" a bit to hear it again. Gone. No controls except pause, play and start over from the beginning. Who in the world thought taking away the audio controls was a good idea?
Also: I don't like that I can't scroll through a quick list of headlines anymore. Now I have to scroll past the first two paragraphs of every single story, which makes it just not worth the trouble to me.
I really do like the slick look of this new version, but functionally I just can't use it for anything but live streaming.

Great app!

This is great--it's so nice to be able to listen to KPCC on my iPhone when I walk to work in the mornings, and anywhere else where I don't have access to a radio. The sound quality is clear and I generally have no problems tuning in. For future updates, it would be nice to be able to continue listening to the broadcast if I close the app to use other functions on my iPhone e.g., calendar, contacts, checking email. An overall nice treat and it's FREE!

Nice if you stand still

I wanted a radio program to use while going for a walk. This isn't it. It stops repeatedly if you walk further than a few yards. Works fairly well at home.
2/3/08 Updating my review to say I found "NPR Mobile" app that works great on my walks. It's not actual streaming radio, BUT its pre-recorded programs are very new, some from the same day I'm listening, so it's almost as good as live. And there are dozens of program choices.
I'd still like a fix for the reception problem with this KPCC app though. It still cuts off if you change cell towers (which happens constantly when you're mobile outdoors). Works in the mall because you're using their signal throughout.

Exactly what a streaming application for a radio station should be

I love KPCC and this iPhone application is one of the reasons why. It's simple and to-the-point. For example, if I want to catch NPR's All Things Considered while I'm walking to my car after a class at California State University Los Angeles, all I have to do is whip out my iPhone, plug in my earbuds and launch KPCC's iPhone application. Nothing else. It's simple. No fooling around with other streaming radio applications. I'm surprise more radio stations don't do this, but, I guess this is why KPCC Radio is such an excellent organization and radio station. A dedicated KPCC icon on my iPhone's screen. This is what I want in a mobile application; don't make more complicated than it needs to be. Keep up the good work KPCC.
