Saves my bacon, daily

Some people check the weather first thing on the morning. I check KickMap! Also, automatic notifications always let me know when my most-used subway lines are a mess, allowing me to take a different route and avoid being late for work. With the current state of the MTA KickMap is a must.

Such a useful app

App was extremely useful during my stay in NYC. Helped me look like a native NY'er. The more I used the app the more I actually learned regarding the trains and direction, next stops, duration, etc. The more you use the app, the less you will need it.

Great info on service changes

I use Kickmap before heading out to the subway to see if my line has delays. Info is up to date and I can use it to make quick decision to opt to a different train line that doesn't have delays at the moment. Also has a clean interface and I like that it shows the neighborhood names on the map. I live here so don't need that, but I'm sure it's helpful to someone from out of town.

Great app for the casual subway rider

I'm an out-of-Towner that relies on this app when I'm visiting the city. I love the tie-in to Google street maps to show you what's at ground level above each station. As some others have reported I wouldn't rely on it for specific time schedules, and it's probably insufficient for "power-riders", but it's great for decent navigation

Easy and Plain way to see NYC Subway

All the subway lines are changing continously based on the time so that you don't see subway lines which are not online at that moment. For instance when you check it in the evening, you would not see Q line which is online only in daytime. Thats very convinient..!

Works like a charm

Could really only use some minor tweaks but all in all an excellent app!
I saw a complaint about the airport directions, but if you look at the map, the AirTrain from JFK connects to Howard Beach (subway only lines) and Jamaica Station (subway and LIRR) and there are tons of signs explaining what to do. LaGuardia is more complicated because of the buses and no direct rail link to the airport, but similarly, there are tons of signs and information kiosks to help - so all you have to do is zoom in to see where the airport bus shuttle connection stations are and get to them. I think that the reason they left out the directions from the connecting Stations to the airports is that you'd need to know which terminal your airline is located in to get specific directions, and that changes quite frequently sometimes. Personally, I don't think it's enough of a reason to give the app a 1-star rating because I've been using KickMap NYC for years now and I've only seen the app get better and more reliable.

Does not support routes from airport!

Ok. About to head out for a trip to NYC and decided to make my life easier and download a subway app. Downloaded the MTA app first but it wasn't very intuitive but it was free. Decided to try this one @$2.99 b/c it was recommended. It's intuitive and I like it but first route tried from airport to hotel and airports routes are not supported. If you can't get me to NYC then how can I use your app? Doesn't make any sense, your missing the whole travel segment of the market. Duh. Otherwise seems like a good app and I may use it after I reach Soho.

Good, but could easily be better

In this new version the pull up tab with the information on each line is much too small and is very difficult to read. I'm not quite sure why the size was reduced in this version, but it makes the app much less pleasant to use. This must be fixed in the next update.

UPDATED REVIEW, 7/8/15: The developers updated their maps -- two thumbs up. Also, thanks for the shoutout in the udpdate notes! ORIGINAL REVIEW, 7/3/15: I really love this app and I use it all the time, but the maps need to be updated — the R Train is running on its normal route now (and has been for almost a year) and the app hasn’t been updated to reflect that. Great app, but the designers should stay on top of things like this.

I can't believe I spent money on this

Wow, for paying $3 for this app, I would at least expect it to recognize that 168 is also a stop on the A and C train in the "search" function. Also, I expected it to have train arrival times clearly listed, not hidden away by using the "search" function again (when I could just use a free app like Google maps for the same purposes). Overall I think this is a pricy app for little functionality. One of the only good things that I appreciate about the app is the info on each subway stop (like whether or not you can cross over to the opposite platform).

Best NYC subway map app!

This is hands down, the best NYC subway map in existence. I have been using this app for years. It is the easiest map to read making such a complex system seem easy. They did both!!

I have been waiting for someone to build a subway app that allows you to just enter a start and end street address and it would tell you the best line to use as well as the best stations for that line. Kickmap has it!
The second thing they have is a simple feature where you select the line you want and it tells you the closest station for it based on your current location.
These devs must be New Yorkers! They clearly use their own product!

Best App For New Yorkers or Tourist!

I was using a simple NYC subway app but this one takes it to a new level! this can give directions (which can sometimes get difficult for some) and it can be just a map plain and simple! and with the snow and ice during the winter seasons, I can find out delays, all in this app! App is gr8 without the hassle of pulling out a NYC subway map, asking anyone for directions or losing your seat to go view the map on train wall. Compact .. Discreet..accurate. Cool feature is it gives you warning sign if there is a delay in any of the subway line. You can beat the price either.

The best (and a bargain)

By using this app, you don't have to rely on a wireless or 3G/4G connection to navigate NYC's public transit-- that's a given. But it also updates to show when trains typically arrive (so you know that the 1 train comes every X minutes during rush hour) and it has detailed local maps.

You're just going to confuse yourself

It's about as handy as having 2 colored subway maps and a little compass can actually be. No turn by turn directions make it difficult to figure out where you are. Honestly, don't waste the money in any of these subway apps yet. Nothing that spectacular is out quite yet. Try the free one out, if anything. But really, you might as well just use the MTA website and Google maps.

Works great except IOS maps crash

The app works great. I travel to NYC 1-2 times a year and this app has always had accurate information in an easy-to-use format. I can't speak to the accuracy of any Sandy-related outages.
My only issue is that when using this app on an iPhone 5 and Apple Maps opens KICKMap for directions, KICKMap often crashes. However, if KICKMap is already open when Apple Maps needs subway directions, it works fine

Good, but can be better

I like this app and I like that this app provides accurate alerts and tells us when a train arrive and departs, but I think that the app developer should add bus maps and bus alerts, too, as well. I also think that the app should include other MTA maps and alerts, like metro north, for example, not just subway maps. I think that this app should be a free app. That way, more people might download this app.

Great easy to use app!

I have been using this app for a while! Over a year. And so far i have not had the need to use any other app. Its simple to use: you can tap and hold on any station to see when the next train is coming. This is very accurate! Some times the trains are delayed only by a few secs to 2 mins. You can use street view for more accuracy. And the app switches automatically for night schedule.

Great Referene

I've been impressed with this app. Was really surprised when the MTA made a last minute change and KickMap updated the alerts that instant. I knew exactly what was going on. Much better than the MTA itself. However, oddly enough, with Sandy disruptions, and partial resumption of subway service that I heard on the radio but didn't find updated on KickMap alerts. Maybe their system got hit by the storm and couldn't make updates. Generally love this app. The only thing I wish they would add are busses as well. So with Sandy glitch and no bus info, I had to take off one star on an otherwise perfect rating.

Worth the extra $$

I had the free version, which was great, for years and finally sprung for the paying version. I'm here to tell you it's worth the money. The routing feature is great, and the app totally knows what lines aren't running, which is big, especially on the w/e's when random lines stop running.

Well-made, reliable - works for me!

Out of 100+ apps on my iPhone I can honestly say that this app is one of the very few I use on regular basis. I have been using it for 3 years now and it's truly a daily lifesaver in NYC. It goes Dar beyond subway maps and actually has live alerts so that you know if the line you are about to take is delayed or under construction or the stop is closed, etc. The map is great with zooming and scrolling, and to find data about your nearest stip. I love the new subway instructions feature. Hey there's even a fun little game hidden in the app. If only the MTA was as reliable as this app... For the price of less than a couple of subway rides it has saved me so much time and would-be-useless rides, it has well paid for itself. Totally worth it!

It is pretty, but lite version is sufficient

The handy thing is you can read the service changes on your phone nice and easy. But the route planner doesn't always take the service changes into account!! So i think its best to just use the lite version and read service changes on the MTA website. For instance KickMap tells me E train is running on the F line between W4th and 36st queens all weekend, but when I get directions from 23rd and 8th ave to wall street it says take the E and change to 2, but there is no E at 23 on 8th ave all weekend... So it's a bit annoying at times. When all the lines are working fine I don't need a route planner, I can read a map. I only need a route planner when the schedules are changed.

I LOVE this map.

This is, with the possible exception of Google maps, the most useful application on my phone. Best Subway App

This is the nicest and easiest to read app for subway lines. I always use the 'locate nearest subway' feature and it's so nice to have the nighttime schedule when you're trying to figure out how to get home at 3am. Kickmap - a great navigation tool!

As a native New Yorker, I always found the subway map you usually see posted on the trains very confusing. I could see how the average tourist would become frustrated when trying to locate were they need to go. As an avid user of the Kickmap, I find it very clear and easy to navigate. I even found it useful when deciphering where certain neighborhoods began and stopped (came in handy when helping a person on the train once!) I definitely recommend it for anyone wishing for a better alternative to the average subway map.

Not happy - app crashes on IOS4

I bought this app thinking it would be a great way to help get around NYC. I did not find this to be the case. The app isn't very intuitive or helpful when you don't already know where the subway stations are. To be fair, maybe spending more time with the app would make it seem more useful. This would not fix the crashing problem on IOS4.1. Navigating around in the app just made it crash, which is not helpful at all. There are no walking directions like there are with other apps. This app needs a lot of work in terms of stability and giving the user the pertinent information they need without having to go through so many menus.

Great

Love the legibility and especially the station streetmap feature for all the times I can't get my bearings when I exit at an unfamiliar station (though it's a little tricky to get the finger-on-map interface to work). One major suggestion: include PLANNED rerouting-- like the signs posted in stations about weekend irregularities coming up, etc. Overall, great app whose designers really thought through what users, well, USE.

Great for newbies

This app was really helpful in teaching this first time visitor to NYC the subway routes. I thought the map was a lot less cluttered than the official subway maps, which makes it easy to understand. The fact that it also worked in the tunnels makes this app very practical. I also liked the feature that brings up google maps.

I love how it tells me which trains are nearby. now I know exactly which train to take from one place to another. I don't have to stop and ask anybody for directions anymore. I love how this app keeps me updated with all the trains. The app is very useful because I ride the train all the time.

Still missing important information

First thanks for adding the notes about the stations on the Q/B line that now only have Manhattan bound trains, but you left one key station out, Avenue H/Brooklyn College!!!
Also, nice to see that major stations in Brooklyn, like Dekalb Avenue, have been added to the Station Look-up :)
It would be totally awesome if in the legend it said exactly what constitutes night hours and day hours and peak hours, because the B train does run in the evening, but not late at night on weekdays and I'm sure other trains do that as well, would be nice to know this information!

Easiest map to read!

Easiest map to understand NYC's complicated system by far! All the subway lines and connections are shown on the map itself - No need to go to busy multiple charts. Link to street maps around all the stations is great feature. Only App with a night map. Wow.

Clearest NYC subway map, improving features

KickMap is an exceptionally clear presentation of a very complicated subway system, which puts the MTA map to shame!
Detailed comments (as of v2.9):
--Now allows you to search for a station by name and have it circled on the map.
--Now includes a location aware feature to show your current position *within* KickMap allowing you to find the nearest subway station.
--You can now pull up a street-map of any station *within* KickMap.
--Station to staion trip planning via Google maps.
--The late-night map is great!
--Links to MTA service alerts mobile site.
I'm really impressed by the improvements made in version 2.9. Almost all of my previous comments/ concerns have now been addressed!
I will try to update this review as further improvements are made.

Great map design, poor app design

The kickmap itself is wonderfully useful. I bought this for the excellent day/night mode map switching, which is great. The overall application, however, is a lot less polished than I had hoped. My biggest complaints are all related to speed and responsiveness:
* It takes too long to launch
* It takes too long to load the "sharpened" graphic after scrolling to a new map area (I'm on a 3GS, can't imagine what previous gen iPhones feel like)
* Scrolling can occasionally be erratic and jumpy, not sure why
* The "locate me" feature takes far too long to work
That said, it's nice that the location finder will find either the absolute nearest station, or the nearest station of a line you specify. Great idea. If the authors of the app can simply work on performance, I'd increase the score quite a lot. I need to be able to take this out of my pocket and be using the app in a matter of seconds.

Takes too long to focus

I've been very dissatisfied with this app, especially because I paid $5 for it. When you zoom in, it takes a long time to go from blurry to a focused image. Also, when moving the map, it doesn't follow the speed or control of your finger, it just wildly goes to another place on the map in the general direction you dragged it to. Finally, I've had trouble tapping on the subway stops to get more information, which is minimal anyway. I had hoped that updates would improve it but so far everything Is the same. That said, I do like the layout of the map as it shows very clearly what trains are at each stop.

Amazing Map App (or Mapp, if you like)

This 24-hour KickMap is a fantastic piece of work. I recently bought it, and I really loved how simple it was to follow. The smoother train lines make it easier to read, and as someone who loves New York, I was ecstatic to see that it actually denoted a great many of the neighborhoods. I even bought one for my friend, and he thinks it's great. I really appreciate your hard work on this mapp.

Great App...some suggestions

This is a really great App. Love that it has the night time map. A few suggestions....as an NJ commuter, I would love to see if maps & schedules for following could be added: Bus, LIRR, Metro North trains, NJ transit Trains, PATH trains. I see that some of the other applications have these features and to have them all added here in one application which already works great and has a great GUI, that would be awesome.

This App Has Helped Me More Then Any Other

I absolutely love this app. Very easy to navigate with. It was one of the cheapest but it looked like it had all the features I was looking for. Being a new student at a NYC college I was so nervous about traveling on the subways because I never had and didn't know how to find where to go. This app is always open on the subways when I'm there and gives me alerts, night and day trains, the stops, and locates you with Google Map. Def a must have for city goers. And to the person who wrote that it does you no good cause theres no internet in the subways, it doesnt need internet to give you the subway map.

I love this map

It's so much easier to read than the MTA map and the nighttime map is a great feature. The reviewers who complain about the inability of the KickMap to locate you on seem to misunderstand that this a stylized diagram and it's very hard to represent your actual location on a diagram unless you're at a stop (in which case you already know where you are on the map). However, I think the stopping patterns of the J/M are incorrect, as the MTA says the J stops at Broad St. all times except weekends (the map says it stops off-peak hours only), and the M makes stops between Myrtle Ave. and Chambers St. (Broad St. in the evening) all times except weekends and late nights (the map says it stops peak hours only). Still, this is the best looking NYC Subway map out there and should be the next MTA map.

The Option

Some people will still need a traditional NYC subway map BUT for me it's perfect. First, I love the design work. It's beautiful. Second, it shows the one peice of info that's a mess on the MTA official map: Just what trains stop where at a glance. A Glance! Not a squinty eyed treasure hunt. Third: Night Mode is great! The link to google maps gets around all of my above ground questions. I love it as is but load the MTA service warnings into the app and it'd be even better. Awesome!

Almost great

Themap looks great, and the day/night feature is cool too. 2 issues though: Firstly, you really ought to be able to zoom in with a double click, and not just by pinching. Because you can double click with the same hand you're holding the phone with. Secondly, the locate button just redirects you to your gps marker on the normal map app. It would be much cooler to see yourself on the kickmap itself. Those two fixes and this app would be great!

Best subway map

Its my first time in New York and no map is more detailed than this app
Only thing wrong with it is that doesn't locate u on the map but that's no problem is really simple
It shows you each train goes where and where does it stop, once I got it was really easy altho needs more details of the streets but get this one for the first timers in the city

Kickmap has a lot of potential

The best map thus far and I've shown it to plenty of friends who love it. My gripes are that it isn't high enough quality when zoomed out abs that I'd like to zoom in even further if possible. Just give us the best quality possible.
Fonts are a bit off and seem either distorted and hard to read in some spots but not so bad. A few things for the future are trip planning and schedules as well as the bus service. I'd pay for a kickmap bus map.
The map is colorful and vibrant and clean. I don't have problems reading the lines or making choices about lines to take but I'd like it if we could get location status without going to google maps.
I'm giving this a five because I love the map and am counting on frequent updates. This is the only way to get the mta to give it serious consideration.

Buy KickMap for the day-night map only!

KickMap is totally worth five-stars just for the "day-night" schedule map. Buy this app without hesitation just to get that feature. For finding your current location and for looking up service advisories - an essential especially on weekends - City Transit is far superior, but KickMap's unique and brilliantly executed day-night map is a genuine essential for anyone who is out late or very early. If that is you, then you really need both of these apps in your iPhone 3G. KickMap does crash my phone when I switch from "day" to "night" while zoomed in. However it is easy to immediately relaunch the app, and when you do so it returns you to the day or night map you had selected, not zoomed. I don't find this a deal-breaker because the day-night map functionality is so brilliant, so useful, and so superbly presented. Like other reviewers I am eagerly awaiting the opportunity to enter any two addresses and see the subway routing or at least the 'nearest station.' This is already achievable at Google Transit, but not yet on these NYC-specific iPhone applications. I suspect both product teams are working late and over the weekend to try to be the first to offer that functionality.

Disappointing

This is a nice-looking map, but literally nothing more. It's locate-nearest-station feature is just a link to Google maps. You could just go to the maps yourself and hit locate-me, and look for the nearest "M" symbol. Same thing. Disappointed with this app, I bought CityTransit right after. It's much better. The map isn't quite as nice to look at (though it is familiar, since it looks just like the official MTA map), but it's hi-res, zoomable, includes advisories and full subway lines, and the locate-nearest-station actually works and shows you the nearest lines.

When it works, it is great, but crashes a lot

I bought this to use when visiting New York. When it loads, it is wonderful, by far the cleanest and easiest to use basic subway map. However, probably 50% of the time I launched the app, it crashed while loading the map. I am not sure if this is the developers fault or the iPhone's (I am guessing a bit of both) but after getting burned by this a couple times, I gave up and went back to the (inferior) paper subway maps.

Navigational Savior

Though simple, this aplication does exactly what it says. It is an easy to read map of the MTA, but not more.
I just got back from New York City. I navigated my entire trip using my KickMap! Figuring out transfers is a cinch, and since it doesn't require an Internet connection you can access it in the tubes of the subway. All the information was accurate and east to decipher.
And I never had to be one of the tourists staring, dumbfounded, at the route map getting jostled by the crowd. I was even able to direct lost out of towners!
I would recommend this map to anyone who needs to use the MTA.
One suggestion for the developers: bookmarks? Maybe?
But still phenomenal without.
