The app won’t accept my subscription. Whenever I sign in, after going through the sign in screens, it defaults back to the original “sign up now” screen and then dead ends to an error message. On iPhone and iPad both. And the old app no longer works. Explain to me why you would deactivate your old platform with no transition time, when the new platform isn’t ready yet? Can I presume I won’t be charged for the days when I can’t access the content I’ve been paying for every month?

Both HBO Max and Discovery+ support integration with Apple TV app to keep track of what you’ve watched. This is no longer supported in the brand-new Max app that’s supposed to replace these services. Why are you removing functionality? The video player is no longer the native player like it is in HBO Max. Again, why are you removing functionality? HBO Max already went through this two years ago! It took a few weeks or months to fix. This is not a great start.

It’s especially annoying when apps don’t display the original air date of a tv series episode or tell you when the next one will air. “2023” doesn’t mean diddly squat. If I have to google it, your UX is worthless. I’m not gonna sign in just to see if it is there yet or not. I have allll the apps and can watch elsewhere.

Haven’t had the displeasure of updating to Max on all my devices, but the app is terrible on iPad OS. For reference, I’m running the app on a 2022 iPad Pro with the latest OS update.
The app struggles with full screen mode. Sometimes leaving the dock bar visible, sometimes the clock/date/battery, sometimes both. Controls for play/pause, etc. permanently disappear, leaving the only route to play/pause content through the control center. Sometime the curser goes away, sometimes it stays indefinitely. When I zoom view (no black bars) it struggles to back to widescreen again and lags video when doing so.
Aesthetically the app is meh. I’m sure there were IP-related reason for creating the new app but there are zero enhancements in my opinion to the UX/UI over the outgoing HBO Max app. I would not have updated if given the choice and will begrudgingly update the rest of my devices to keep watching my shows.
I’m sure the app issues will get resolved in a future update but the QA of this initial release was awful.

The app itself is terrible. $19.99 a month and HDR doesn’t even work at all. The video player isn’t the iOS one, even after admitting this mistake with HBO Max. I had to redownload the new app on everything, and I mean EVERYTHING. It logs you into a dummy account, so you have to logout and then log back in. I don’t get why they couldn’t just update the hbo max app to be MAX. It’s been an incredibly frustrating experience. I have kids who have devices too. The transition from HBOmax to Max was always expected to be an adjustment, but what I didn’t foresee is for the decline of the platform to be this great. The content seems to be completely disorganized. One of biggest plus the HBOmax platform had was the fact that even though the amount of content was soooo extensive, you always had the hubs and menus on the side to direct you straight to where you wanted to go, with Max it just seems like they just dumped all the content and created a free for all.

I was hoping this app would be a good replacement for HBO Max because of how terrible the app worked, but this is just more of the same. Constant connection issues, and downloads take forever and most times fail. Most of my downloads I can’t even watch without WiFi, so what’s the point of downloading it. Safe to say HBO won’t be getting anymore of my money because this is absolutely pathetic and if anyone at HBO cared about their consumers then they would’ve fixed this by now. I enjoy watching shows on this app on my phone. But as compared to the other streaming apps I have this ones connection is quite poor. The slightest change is service, not losing service but dropping 1 bar of 5g, and the entire app immediately stops and won’t reconnect. A dramatic title sure, but HBO is really taking the reigns of its own demise seriously. By removing itself from the unique set of names now it’s making the brand another garbage entry in monotony by eliminating its standout color purple, removing HBO the only recognizable detail that matters about its name because max? Who really wants to sit there and think, “man can’t wait to max and chill with so and so”. No it’s ridiculous to think that this change to be nearly identical to prime video, Facebook, Twitter, discord, Disney plus would mistaking my have people just choose one of the blue dots to watch something now. New app! Deleted all the titles I downloaded for this trip. New app has NO way for a full page view of: My List, Recently Watched, Just Added, or anything for that matter. You used to be able to scroll a page view for recently added titles. Now you can only side scroll and see six titles at a time, plus it will only scroll showing thirty titles in total.
There are new titles added with the name change. Unfortunately 90% are reality shows which I never watch. Only one new movie.
I’m looking forward to finding all the new bugs in the app that didn’t exist on the HBOMax app.

I cannot fathom why anybody would even think (let alone suggest to a supervisor and get approved) to drop the HBO branding and use the Discovery/Max branding instead. People tune in for Westworld, The Leftovers, Game of Thrones, The Sopranos, The Wire, Succession, Barry, Veep, and Chernobyl. I had to google a list of names for Max shows because the branding is so poor, and the original content from that side doesn’t seem much better. I certainly won’t be watching “Alaskan Killer Bigfoot” or “UFO Witness.” This is one of the worst marketing decisions that I’ve ever seen.

This is easily the worst rebranding I have ever seen. It no longer has the HBO brand recognition going do it and purple was a better color since Disney + and prime video already had blue. But you know what, at least this may be a better app, right? No! It literally looks exactly the same as HBO Max. Zaslav, what are you doing?! This guy really has no clue how to run an entertainment company in the 21st century. I swear I could run Warner Bros. Discovery 5x better with no experience in upper level management.

Such a downgrade from the HBO Max app. The Just Added and Last Chance sections are half of what they used to be as you can only see a select number of shows and movies. Desperately needs a “see all” option or just go back to how it used to be. Also why remove the dates for when something is leaving the app?

Usability is great and I feel like the movie and show selections fill out the space more here on my iPad, the only critique I have is of the app color changing. I have too many apps that are blue already, wish they would have opted to keep the purple.

Max has the best of hbo and discovery +. Not only does it have the best, it has it all in just one app now . If I were Netflix or other competitors I’d be afraid of max . Honestly I cancelled Netflix earlier this year . Max has the double the amount of great content for a cheaper price (I had 4K in Netflix ,now hd ad free with max). Netflix just wasn’t worth the money for the low quality content they put out . Max im here to stay with you . I’m ecstatic !!! HOD! TLOU!! Ghost adventures !!!! My faves goes on !!!

Unfortunately after this change to MAX it requires iOS 14 or later. The old hbo max app supported my iPad just fine. I can’t update because my iPad is older or I would. It should still support my iPad just like the old app did. I’m not buying new devices just for this app. All my other apps let me use them. This is ridiculous. Other than that the app worked great for me.

Very pleased with content. There doesn’t seem to be much missing. I’ve only been looking for my favorite series so far and they’re all here. I would strongly recommend better search options. There is SOOOO much content on this site that if you do a keyword search you’re getting 20 pages of everything from mythbusters to Sesame Street to Sex in the City. Would be nice if there were ways to search just in discovery or hbo etc.

Now, I understand that you were transitioning and no longer HBO Max and that is awesome. I love the new layout and everything about the app. The only I have noticed is that shows/movies that I used to watch or that I want to watch that used to originally be on HBO Max are now missing can you please explain why or is this an error /update: it has turned out that I accidentally had kids mode turn on, and it has prevented me from watching certain shows. Thank you for your time.

This is not complicated. You actually already know for a fact that your only legitimate option is a native video player, as we have been through this before. So let’s just skip back to the part where you do NOT remove embedded, automatic functionality.
You have already announced that you vigorously intend to only have the absolute worst content library in the history of content libraries, so it would be beneficial to you that what minuscule value you retain would be easy for us to find. So removing yourself from the Apple TV what’s next queue is an absolute mail in the coffin.

They added pip and up next already, glad to see that wasn’t dropped those are critical features for me.
Dinging the rating a bit though because I feel like discovery and navigation in the app is just a little clunky. I really almost with the brands thing was a little higher up. It just seems hard to navigate if you don’t know exactly what you are looking for.

Year long Apple subscription for HBO Max does not transfer to Max

I paid for a year long subscription for HBO Max via the Apple Store a month or two ago. When trying to restore purchase once installing the Max app it states there is no subscription. I hope this can be changed or updated in the near future.

I have a yearly plan for HBO Max which was paid through the Apple App Store. The new Max app is not recognizing that subscription. When I press restore purchase, it says my subscription is not active. There is no selection to sign in with Apple, iCloud, Apple TV, etc. I’m not sure how to get access to my account using the new app. Any help would be awesome or a credit for the unused balance that would cover the next 6 months….

Downloaded and opened it. It says hello and my name and to click to start streaming that all my stuff is there. I click on the button and get a message saying “An error occurred. Something went wrong. Please try again.” It has an “ok” button to hit but even that doesn’t work! I’ve tried multiple times and still get the message. So glad they “upgraded” 🙄

It accepts my credentials and recognizes my profile, but when I click the “Start Streaming” button, it states “An error occurred! Something went wrong. Please try again.”, and it freezes. I am unable to click the “OK” button to clear the error message, and I have to kill the app to try again. I’ve tried rebooting my iPad Pro, but the app does this 100% of the time so I am unable to access content.

That’s the message I receive as soon as I sign in to this new replacement for HBO Max. Please try again, you say? No thanks. I’ll go back to my HBO Max app which DOES work.
It amazes me that in 2023 software producers still do not know how to test apps…or don’t care to. at least it’s consistent. It fails on Apple TV and my iPhone. so congrats on that.
This app is useless. HBO or whoever spent weeks hyping this app called Max. And it just doesn’t work. What a joke. My only question is how did this become a Apple “editors pick” if it doesn’t even work??

I signed in with my provider account and when I hit the start streaming button I get an error and an “ok” button with no way to recover, fix, or even log out of the app. I can’t even tap on the ok button. I have to force close the app to enter the perpetual error cycle again. Even deleting the app to start again doesn’t allow me to sign out and sign back in.

So far the app seems to be working just as well as HBO Max did before the change. Only thing I’m not really liking is the change to the new custom player as opposed to the TVOS native player. Also it doesn’t synchronize with the TV app like HBO Max did. Improvements on this and it’ll be 5 starts thanks to all the new content available and the quality upgrade on a lot of its movies and shows.

Overall, I’m mostly impressed with Max! HBO Max always had performance issues on some of my devices (including newer iPhones, but especially on an older iPad). But Max feels way smoother most of the time, with better search and scrolling performance. Also, with my existing year long HBO Max subscription, I continue to get 4k HDR at seemly pretty high bitrates (possibly higher than HBO Max?), so it makes me very happy that I wasn’t screwed over. On top of that, we get more content now. Even though HBO has far superior TV, sometimes you want to relax with HGTV or something similar, so I’m happy this is now an option without needing to pay more.
My hope is that they continue pushing Max to be a great platform in a way that multiple disparate underinvested platforms can’t be. My fear is that quality content from HBO doesn’t get the investment it deserves under the new WBD merger. (I guess we’ll see.) One thing I am VERY disappointed in is the decision to cancel nearly finished movies and to remove completed, reputable shows like Westworld from the platform. How does that make any sense?
Honestly, the weird licensing deals which make it very confusing about what’s available where and when need to die, and it seems like Max is a step in the right direction from a company that has enough properties that one service could actually be consistently valuable. So far I’m impressed and cautiously optimistic.

The HBO Max app had grown to be highly functional with its hubs, the way it was organized and how intuitive it was. This Max app feels half finished and does not feel like it’s user driven, but rather an App designed to push what the platform wants you to watch. Honestly they should have just reskinned the HBO Max app and called it food because this Max app is sorely lacking.

A re brand is fine but the HBO max app was a lot cleaner and easier to navigate. This merge also canceled a ton of shows and movies including the amazing world of gumball movie. I wish the app was the same just with a different name. The colors aren’t as good either. It’s a lot more complex then the HBO max app.

Many Apple TV app features are missing

As stated, there are several features that used to function perfectly fine in the former “HBO Max” app. The two features I’m talking about in particular are:
- Match Content (Dynamic Range/Frame Rate)
- Apple TV app synchronization
Match Content is an important feature that allows the Apple TV to change the dynamic range (SDR/HDR/HDR10+/Dolby Vision) and frame rate (generally 24fps for movies and tv shows). Many people want the content to display in its proper dynamic range and frame rate.
Apple TV app integration allows you to view shows and movies that you’re watching in the “Up Next” section and continue watching them which would open the Max app and take you to the video.
Overall, while I like that there’s more UHD content in Max than there was with HBO Max, the app itself is a major downgrade.

We've gone from enduring months of HBO Max slowly becoming less and less broken, to going right back to ground zero. We're talking failings with just basic functionality: most distracting being videos do not completely trigger fullscreen mechanics, such as failing to hide the status bar unless you leave the app & return mid-playback, yet that *still doesn't get rid of the home bar or multi-task button at the top. It's like having a taskbar present on a computer as you're trying to watch a movie. There's a reason it disappears when you go fullscreen - It's just not a premium experience otherwise. Other apps manage it, and HBO Max even managed it on day 1, yet we're somehow behind day 1 of *that.

It wanted to make me sign in by Xfinity. I had to uninstall it twice, but then it worked. I am now connected without having to enter anything and all my profiles and everything are there. I have Max through AT&T.

It’s launch night and the new app will not let me sign in. I’m using the same credentials that still work in the original HBO Max app. Why did they have to release a new app anyway? Couldn’t the old one just have been updated? It would have made things a lot easier for the customers and fans of HBO.
