Description

An open world adventure game filled with silly characters and terrible secrets.

Afterplace is an adventurous indie game for mobile devices. It's a huge open world, full of hidden secrets, treasures, and creatures. You'll run around the woods, fight monsters, and talk to ostensibly shady characters! All from your pocket! Be warned though - you never know what the forest might be hiding, and not all trails are paved. Labyrinths and dungeons are tucked away in the most concealed nooks. There are no waypoints in Afterplace. You'll have to forge your own path.

Afterplace has been designed from the ground up to be a fast, fluid, beautiful experience for mobile. There are no virtual buttons. You can move and attack by touching anywhere. You can tap objects directly to interact or attack, or use two thumbs like a traditional controller. The game will adapt dynamically to your play style. Pick up and set down the game at your own pace, it will always save your progress. Afterplace is made to feel like a full-fledged indie adventure game that fits in your pocket.

About the Author:

Afterplace is made by one person, Evan Kice. A former software engineer from Austin TX, Evan quit his job (to the dismay of his friends and family) and has been working full time on Afterplace since early 2019. The initial game released in December of 2022, but Evan plans on continuing to support and polish the game when he can!

All of the best parts of many other popular games in the genre

I won’t make this super long. It’s got good combat, cool battles, awesome music, wonderful story, multiple endings, funny/sad/interesting dialogue, and a surprising amount of replayability. You’ll want to go through it again AT LEAST once, ESPECIALLY if you didn’t get the true ending the first time around. Just get it. It is so worth the money.

Literal Masterpiece

This game is amazing. It’s one of the first ios games in years to give me that feeling of getting lost in an awesome rpg adventure, itching to boot it up and play whenever I have some downtime. It’s like a mix between the top down Zelda games and Undertale. Also the writing and characters are awesome. 10/10 would recommend.

Brilliance

Easily one of the best games I have had the fortune to play on a phone, and a masterpiece for a single artist’s work.

The story, characters, setting, and art are all magnificent. The combat is fun and simple, and it’s a surprisingly addictive pick up and play for a few minutes or an hour.

I would recommend to everyone I know.

Surprisingly Charming Game!

I bought this game on a whim, and it became the first game I have beaten in a long time without any guides! Other than the in-game rudimentary map you find, there is little to no hand holding. The game is incredibly charming and you can feel the love from the dev in every decision you make. I legitimately love this game. Please give it a try, look at it as an Undertale-like.

More than meets the eye

At first it may seem like just an ordinary whimsical action-adventure. Hardly the first game where you run through the forest and kill slimes. But if you explore diligently, there’s something deeper and darker here that transforms this game into a completely unique experience.

It’s a lovingly handcrafted world where every detail is well thought out. Combat and puzzles require thinking but aren’t too difficult. In all, this is one of my favorite iOS games of all time! Solo developer, unique vision, fair price: a welcome relief from the flood of mass-market freemium games.

Exactly what I needed

I never leave reviews but I’m about two hours into this game and already love it. Been looking for weeks for a game to play and couldn’t get hooked to anything other than Balatro. But this is the RPG I didn’t know I needed. Super interesting story and charming game play. Makes me want to know what happens next.

AMAZING GAME!!!

This game is so original and fun! It satisfies the part of me that wants to wander around and find the secret passages, learn the mazes. The characters are all interesting. The dialogue is funny and enjoyable (which is rare). I love all the crazy products you can buy from the vendors and the wacky effects they induce. The story just kept getting and deeper and I was very immersed and interested with the whole thing start to finish. It reminded me of if legend of Zelda and Myst had a baby. Evan Kice, you are a genius and I sincerely hope you will make a next chapter of Afterplace or a prequel because I want more. I don’t want it t be over. If it’s an issue of money start a Kickstarter and you’ll get funding. anyway, thank you for this incredible gem of a game.

Best game I’ve played in a long while!

Where to begin? The storyline is definitely vague at the beginning, but as you progress, you start to see all the pieces fitting beautifully and masterfully. The though process between the different graphics depending on the world is lovely. The main graphics and world remind me of playing the original Zelda games with trying to memorize all the pathways and hidden areas. Great variety of monsters to defeat, and very touching ending with a beautiful resolve. If I were to make ANY changes, it’d be that the world was a little bigger, and that you’d be able to find and use more weapons. Cannot wait to join the next adventure with Yu and the friends you make along the way!! Very well done 👏👏👏❤️

SO good!

Got this game on a whim because it was on sale and looked cute. Was NOT expecting the depth of artistry, worldbuilding, character development and story that this game delivered. I love a game that doesn't hold your hand and that lets you explore and figure out things on your own. This game did that well and had so many fun secrets and surprises to discover along the way. I fell in love with this world and its characters. Will definitely be returning for another playthrough, but will miss the experience of going in blind for the first time! A new all time favorite ♥️

Pretty amazing.

Easily the best game I’ve ever played on my phone. It’s put together incredibly well. It’s just challenging enough without being too easy or too difficult and the controls are stupid simple but work perfect. I hope Evan makes a sequel or an equivalent game.

This game SURPRISED ME

I was getting tired of finding mobile games that I would download, play for 10 minutes, then instantly delete. I needed a new game to get into. Then this game kept popping up. I eventually said “screw it. Why not try?”

This game has seared itself into my brain.

I’ve only played few games that hook me like this one. Heck, I never write reviews for games on the App Store. But I just had to write about how absolutely charming this world(or fabrication of a world…)is. You get sucked into the charm instantly, with the first thing you see being a demonic-looking portal, setting you up for exactly what this game is: a trippy game full of many moments of existential crisis hidden inside a charming Zelda/Chrono Trigger-style game.

My favorite thing has to be the writing. There are moments where I straight up laughed out loud at things characters said, simply because it was so charming. But there are times the writing is so good that it scares you. But I’ll let you play for yourself to find out…

Anyway, I’m just mad I didn’t find this game sooner. If you have 7 bucks to spare and you’re looking for a good game to play, give this a shot. I promise you won’t be disappointed.

An Emotional Masterpiece

I recently bought a controller for my phone and was looking for a little time waster RPG to play while I waited to get my steam link and GeForce connected to my phone. I picked this game up as something I thought I’d play for an hour and be done. Not only did this game get me in the first 5 minutes but it kept me utterly enamored til the very 3nd. The controls feel very simple but the combat mechanics make it very layered and complex. The RPG progression isn’t standard which is absolutely more than ok and gave me a breath of fresh air. With amazing world building, heartbreaking lore and lovable and actually funny characters, alongside a slew of twists and turns. It put me in such a good place with myself after playing and genuinely almost had me in tears at some point. I’m a cynic and I have nothing negative whatsoever to say about this experience. I’ll probably buy it on steam for myself and a few others as well. I love this game and I can safely say this game is one of my favorites of the decade. I hope to see more from Evan Kice in the near future.

So fun!

Love this game! I’m a very casual gamer, mostly just iOS games. I like Terraria, Starbound, and Junk Jack. Afterplace is simpler in that you don’t have to collect and craft things like the other listed games, but the worlds have various hidden things to find. The navigation is straight, too, in terms of pressing and holding to get around. Fighting is simply tapping to use your sword and swiping to dodge. It is very intuitive and easy for casual gamers to pick up and play. The invisibility mode is a great feature for casual gamers who like to play games but are not super skilled at fighting things. I did have to Google things when I got stuck, but I am a very basic/casual gamer.

The exploration of different worlds is delightfully fun, and the character interactions are crucial to the game storyline. ***SPOILER: Depending on how you interact with the characters, you will get different endings. As a mental health professional, I truly enjoyed the story arc for the “best” ending. This game has more depth than you might expect for a phone game.

What is really impressive is that this was all created by one guy who quit his engineering job to create the game. I counsel young high school and college students, and a good handful want to be video game designers. This game is an inspirational example for budding gamer developers.

I really enjoyed this game and would highly recommend it! It was worth the one-time cost.

Mostly worth playing.

The gameplay is great, even if i didnt figure out that I should have COMPLETELY utilized the controls with one hand until close to end of the game. Oh well lol. Anyway, the combat was fun and fluid. Not too hard, not too easy. Graphics & sound were very nice, and i didn't encounter a single bug, hangup or glitch. Everything is super easy, from managing items to the pick up/put down nature of the game as an app. The are only a few cons, but theyre not ones that made me stop playing. One? The characters talk a bit too much at you. Meaning, while there are only a few instances of an actual back and forth conversations between more than one "person", 95% of it is just a character talking to you whenever you happen upon one - and even though the dialogue is cute and/or humorous, it always goes on for far too long. Gripe 2? Its very easy to get lost, and hard to remember where the heck everything is, which is especially frustrating toward the end when you finally have a straightforward goal. There's a map, but it is far too cryptic considering the reality bending nature of the story. And finally, gripe 3? I just beat the game and STILL dont know exactly what the story was about. Idunno, maybe i missed something. It has a semi-meta aspect to it, but gosh darn if it couldnt use a bit more clarification. Just a thought. Anyway, Afterplace is a good game and worth buying. Its a refreshing change from all the repetitive garbage games out there that are all basically clones of other ones. Peace.

Simply put: A masterpiece

This game checked several boxes for me:

Relatable characters? Check.

Humor (lighthearted and dark)? Check.

Mind-twisting story? Check.

GIANT MURDEROUS FLAMINGOS? Check.

Evan Kice could have written a book using the story he created for Afterplace, and it would have been a bestseller. Instead he decided to share it with the world in video game form, and it absolutely still captures that majestic storytelling with easy to learn and execute mechanics (though some enemies take a bit of practice to reliably defeat with no damage).

Very rarely in a game can you force someone to sell drugs to you (seriously, all the cool dealers are doing it), immediately help a kid overcome himself, followed by a tasty bowl of noodles.

The game throws plot twists like a pitching machine, but wraps them all together in a package that made me cry at a few points. Oh, and you can destroy a playground.

If you're lonely, this game will resonate with you. A lot.

If you like games that mess with your head, this game will feed that.

If you love a good story, this game is for you.

I should note that most of my time (so far) has been spent on the Apple iOS version, I also purchased it on Steam (it's literally so good I bought it twice). The primary differences that I've seen so far is that combat is easier on Steam (REALLY recommend you use a controller though), but using items is easier on iOS.

Regardless, this is a masterpiece of a game, and I would recommend it to anyone (except flamingo-lovers, you monsters).

This game is a masterpiece

I just randomly decided to download after searching for an adventure game and I saw some good reviews. Boy am I glad I did. I’ve played this game non stop for the last few days and just beat it. It was fun start to finish, with lots of humor, wit, twists, and an awesome story. You really grow to care about these characters and the game has an almost nostalgic feeling to it. I just can’t believe that this game isn’t way more popular. My only complaint is that it was hard to find hints or help online due to it not being so well known but I am positive that it will just grow in popularity from here. Thank you to everyone involved in making this game. It’s amazing! I will recommend this to all of my friends.

Cozy, refreshing, excellent

I just finished Afterplace and rushed here to leave a review. If you need a great RPG to escape a family vacation, don’t skip this game. It’s not super long or challenging, but the characters and world are deep and engaging. The combat is straight-forward and the puzzles are fun. Every obstacle felt approachable - in a very good way. This deserves to be an editor’s choice for a reason!!!

"Works on a Mac"

Crashes and the "save" is the crash so you loose all progress. Ripped-off again on another game that is supposed to "work on a Mac". It does work but it depends on your definition of "work".

Great game

I absolutely loved this game! I finished it in just a few days because it is one of those games that you want to play all the time and can’t stop until you are finished. If you do stop playing it, you think about playing it. I’m still thinking about playing it, wishing I didn’t finish it! Anyway, great game. I loved the silly characters and the enjoyable game play. Dying didn’t make me feel like I failed, since I was just born again and the game progressed. That was pretty cool! Hope the author makes more games like this!

Deceptively addictive

When I first started playing the game, I thought this was going to be a short game, give how minimal the graphics look. I might play it for 5 min and never play it again. An hour later, I had to force myself to stop playing, :-D. This is a surprisingly fun game in the style of the original NES Zelda games, but with its own wonderful charm and humor. And in a way, it's teaching me how to play games better vs running headlong at the enemy and dying over and over :-D.

The best mobile RPG ever created.

Everything about this game is worth 5 stars. The character dialogue is interesting and highly entertaining. Combat is simple but very fun to master. The graphics are gorgeous. The story is trippy and confusing at first but it all comes together in a fantastic way. You won’t regret playing this game.

Love it but dislike the beatability

I enjoyed this game immensely; however, I must admit that the experience felt somewhat truncated. Despite the engaging gameplay and captivating storyline, I found myself defeating the final boss much too quickly, clocking in at around a 5-hour run time for the entire game. This rapid conclusion left me wishing for a bit more depth and constraint in the side quests, which I believe could have extended the gameplay and provided a more satisfying build-up to the final confrontation.

But tbh, I kinda messed up in using the invinsability mode.

DONT SKIP THIS GAME

I walked into it blind after stumbling upon it in the App Store. Usually hard to find games aren’t worth anything, ranging from cheap cash grabs to soulless nonsense. But Afterplace…is such a different game entirely. The Legend of Zelda/UnderTale influence is the first thing that caught my attention while playing. I fell in love the moment a squirrel I attacked ran offscreen and led me to a big surprise (emphasis on big). After that, I really couldn’t put the game down. The details I found in the world were so well fleshed out, and it feels lived in. Everything I interacted with/talked to gave me a reason to care and pursue crazy side quests. I loved the quirkiness, it’s got such a distinct, well crafted charm you truly can’t find with many games. I got so invested in the stories and the complete mystery of the events unfolding before me. I love getting to unravel the story myself and catching the details of the world that each tell a story. Each big story piece gave context in a way that had me in awe, especially the big main ending…(jaw was on the ground). Gameplay was simple, fluid but gave enough to do so that it never grew stale to play. This game has so much care and love put into it, for just one guy…Evan really gave us a piece of art worth talking about. From the serious moments to the all around goofiness of this game, it was such a delight to experience. I’m looking forward to anything this guy has next. Worth more than 8$ in my opinion

I had given up on iOS mobile games

This game kinda changed my life. It breathes new life into the mobile gaming world. Don’t be mislead by the simple graphics, the gameplay and story are some of the most substantive I’ve played in a long while. Starts off kinda fantasy and then gets rather deep. Very slow burn but worth the play. I especially love that you can turn off damage for the hard bosses (Unlike Elden Ring).

Let me start by saying I am not a gamer. I don’t play a whole lot of video games in general and when I do it’s Animal Crossing lol. But this has genuinely been so much fun. Easy to learn, easier to become obsessed with. Really phenomenal world building and the open world concept has been so fun to explore. My only wish is that there was *more* of this game. Kudos to the dev on this one for creating an enjoyable experience for gamers and non gamers alike.

Love Letter to Yu

Wow.

I rarely play, let alone purchase, phone games because they rarely are able to hold my attention. But I managed to grab Afterplace when it was 50% off. I had no idea what i was getting in to, but as I was on break from school and work i figured what the heck? let’s try this cute little game and see how it goes. i can tell you that it was NOT what i was expecting.

this game never failed to take my breath away. the levels of detail, attention, and heart that went into its creation made it worthy of every single second i spent playing it, and thinking about it when i wasn’t. The dialogue, comedic elements, storytelling, all of it felt so much larger and more intimate than most games i’ve ever played. I fell in love with this game in such a short time, and i grieved deeply for myself upon my completion of it as I will never again have the pleasure of playing it with no knowledge of what i was getting myself in to. Apparently there are different endings, and i will be happy to play this game many more times.

As mentioned before, i was lucky enough to purchase this game at a 50% discount. But, upon completing it, my experience playing this game has actually made me want to pay *more*. So, i bought it as a gift for my friend to enjoy. i can’t wait to hear what they have to say about it!

An experience disguised as a game

This seriously isn’t just a game - it’s an entire experience! It blows my mind it’s not priced higher.

The more you explore - the more you learn. The game is a perfect mix, I found you need to die to learn some of the lore, and there were multiple points where I did *NOT* want to die due to something someone said (“Don’t go in there… If you die you’ll change forever…”) (“I wonder… if you die here, will your soul find its way back?”)

I’ve played it 3 times because I’m interested in the alternate endings, and plan on running through it a few more times. I had to buy extra copies - this is the first game I’ve played that I couldn’t not share.

What a great game

Such a pretty, fun, heartfelt game. It’s a good length, not crazy long not super short. Lots of places to explore and secrets to find. Some of the story beats and dream vignettes hit just so right. Dialog and characters are fantastic. My only complaint is that it occasionally didn’t read a dodge swipe correctly and I got hit but that’s pretty minimal. Really loved it. Worth every single one of the 699 pennies I spent on it.

A hidden gem and a masterpiece

This game is quite the hidden gem. A masterpiece on mobile. A little bit of Undertale mixed with some top down Zelda would be a simple way of describing this game, but I think it’s more than that.

It’s a game that doesn’t hold your hand and wants you to explore at your own pace, finding your own way and piecing the story and character together yourself. If Undertale+Zelda sounds like your kind of game, try it out and don’t look up anything else. $7 for this is a steal, and the developer of this game is just a single person- absolutely insane!

The game is also built from the ground up for mobile so the controls work great imo and the UI is unobtrusive. The game also saves constantly, so you can close the app and pop it open for short bursts without worry of losing progress.

Totally awesome & worth the price

Evan Kice is such a perfectionist that he is still polishing the game to its finest details. I have been probably playing the game for 8+ times, each time discovering new dialogs that I overlooked in previous playthroughs. Very nicely written dialogs, level design & story plot. Very easy to play for someone who is not a seasoned gamer (there’s even an invincibility toggle). Might be a notch scary for kids despite the rating.

That’s incredible! This is such a great game. I don’t want it to be over. This is the best mobile game I’ve ever played and it was so easy to move at any pace- i could spend hours in one sitting or just a few minutes exploring the world around me… the goal is imminent but you aren’t pushed through just trying to “win”. The experience is more important than the result (as games are, but you feel glad for it)

I can’t recommend enough. Best game in the App Store. Please make a sequel! Or a prequel! I want to see more of Clover’s story or Minno or the weird mean girls yelling at me from the balcony…. I want to know more about that giant wheat field and the guy trying to sell me drugs under that tree… and that dapper heavily accented catfoxgod… and the giant eye in the library… I need to know more!!!

Instant classic. Must play!

The most fun, interesting, and artful mobile game I’ve ever played. Most everyone can agree that botched ports, Gatcha, idle, and auto battlers all but dominate mobile gaming (though some of those can be fun). Afterplace is different. A true breath of fresh air.

Secondly, as someone only enough to have gotten the original Zelda the Christmas it came out (I’ve played every one since). Everyplace gives me that same feeling. It doesn’t hold your hand. The extremely simplified controls are everything because it leaves you free to explore this strange and beautiful world and learn about it as you explore. That said the controls simple, the battles can be complex. The enemy AI/patterns is so well thought out but also a little random sometimes.

Easily stands on top of all mobile games today. As well, as holds its place firmly in all games

Loved it, couldn’t put it down!

The story and depth of this game was delightfully surprising! I enjoyed it immensely. The controls are easy enough and I love that you can use invisible mode so you can enjoy the game without getting killed (that option is so great for busy folks with low patience lol!).

Some of the dialogue is indeed a bit silly, but if it bothers you, keep playing, it gets better. This game has a lot more to it than you’d expect, it’s very well done. It feels like something out of a complex dream! This creator has crazy imagination. Love it!!!!

Absolutely genius

What can I say that hasn’t already been said by so many others. This game is an absolute masterpiece, from the gameplay, the combat, the dialogue and story of characters, and even the music is perfect. Every single part of the game feels so smooth and well put together, and there’s so much to discover. On my second playthrough now and I’m still discovering different hidden details. The work put into this is amazing, and honestly, this would easily be a $20 game on more platforms if you wanted to branch out onto different platforms, and with landscape mode added in, that would be even easier to integrate. To anyone reading this, this is an amazing game and you should absolutely get it, it’s a beautiful experience. And to the dev, holy crap, you’ve got an amazing talent.

Mobile Masterpiece

Just finished the game. What a complete joy that was. The graphics, music, story, pacing, everything: chef’s kiss. Beautiful, moving, mysterious, humorous, and overall , just completely enchanting. It breaks my heart that the free-to-play takeover of mobile gaming will prevent so many people from experiencing this amazing game. I hope that the developer will keep making games. I’ll be first in line to buy whatever he comes up with next. And if he’s reading this: Thank you so much for making something beautiful.

I love it!

The only thing that bothers me is that not a lot of people have played it, so I can’t just look up “cliffs of the west” and where that is haha (I still have no idea what that means and idk how to get to it.) But since this is the first game I’ve played that’s like this, I have to do it all on my own. It is definitely a challenge memorizing all the little paths back to the town, and back to the northern woods. It’s been amazing.

Artistic masterpiece

This is one of the best games I’ve ever played regardless of pc, console, or mobile. It is seriously a minding bending experience. This game takes from some of the greats such as Zelda and undertale but expands it and does it’s own thing in such an amazing way. You can tell the creator of this game is also an amazing writer. Very few games can break boundaries artisticly while managing to be fun to play, this game does both. MUST BUY. Bravo creator.

One of the deepest games I’ve ever played

This game brought me to tears at points. Not only is the story line have so much depth, but the characters each have their own backstories and plot that you have to work for. This game can only be described as a cinematic masterpiece. The artwork is breathtaking. The soundtrack is beautiful. The gameplay keeps you on the edge of your seat right up until the very end. Undertale would have nothing on this game. I was never disappointed for a single second since the moment I picked Afterplace up. It was absolutely worth every cent, and you can bet your money that I will absolutely recommend Afterplace to everyone I know. This game needs way more recognition for the hidden gem that it is.

Interesting to the very end!

I am not one to usually review games, but Afterplace quickly impressed me! The smooth and simple controls are nice, the graphics are cute, the music decent, but the story and the characters take the prize!

This game left me wanting more! The story and characters bring you in and make you want know more about them and their past and where in the universe are we, and where did we come from?

Great game! Hopefully more to come a sequel or anything this developer will hopefully make another game!

SNAPS ALL AROUND

This has been the most enjoyable game I have played on IOS in a long time. If you’re a Zelda style of game fan, then this is right up your alley. The mechanics are amazing, the fighting gradually gets harder (is actually difficult at the end), the story line is magical. This game had me wanting to play all the time and to find every hidden gem. I wish I could rate it higher and wipe my mind clean so I could play it again for the first time.

Fantastic RPG - Exactly what I hope mobile RPGs become someday

Afterplace is not just the best rpg I have played on my phone, it is also one of the best rpgs I have ever played- comparable to Undertale imo. This is a fantastic game with a lot of charm to it, I wholeheartedly hope the developer continues to make these games.

The combat, while simple in terms of what the player can do is made interesting by the variety of enemies. The ability to collect upgrades is welcome, the characters are memorable and interesting, the bosses are very cool and enjoyable to fight- if a bit difficult at times.

At 6.99 dollars, I got my money's worth with a 10-12 hour adventure.

Underrated, silly, and comfy

I have never laughed and smiled more at a mobile game than with this.

All of the characters and their dialogue feel unique and, despite the tiny sprites, convey emotion incredibly well. Some characters are also adorable little scrunkly scrimblos. :)

The writing so far is silly but not overly silly. Just silly enough to occasionally give you a chuckle without derailing the immersion. Not too dissimilar to a certain popular game maker game.

The visuals are simple and pleasant, and doors are always marked in a certain manner so you don’t miss them, while secrets are way less obvious and are fun to look for.

The music and ambiance make for a very chill experience, and ramp up for the combat.

The only issues I had was the music cutting out in the Library, and the menu buttons occasionally not registering taps. So far everything else works fine. (possibly fixed now)

The new landscape mode is a welcome addition, and feels way more comfortable for a game like this.

Fun, funny, and engrossing but that frame rate : (

This is the best action RPG I’ve played since Links Awakening. Wow, I’m loving it. It’s funny without trying to hard, the combat is varied and engaging, and the pixel art is truly gorgeous. Some areas were so beautifully and artfully done, I thought about trying to get a screen grab so I could make a set of prints to put it.

My only gripe is frame rate. I don’t have a 120 refresh rate capable phone but it can do 60 and this feels like it must be something like 24. It’s hard to play at this refresh rate these days. I’ve been spoiled I guess. It was a struggle to play the first half hour of the game because it made me feel sluggish in combat.

I really hope this can be patched later.

Still, even with that issue, I can’t put this game down. It’s really wonderful. The developer (I heard it’s just a one person operation) brilliant.

If you find this review, even if your sensitive to low refresh rates, download this anyway. It’s worth adjusting for.

Fantastic game - Would love to see more!

Just beat this game after buying it last week, and was so pleasantly surprised. The visuals are incredible, the controls are easy enough, and the story and dialogue was next level. I’d even say exceptional.

This game was made by one individual, so, understandably, there were a few things that left me with an itch that had not been scratched, but was teased at. For instance, the combat & weapon system. In an ideal world you would have been able to buy a variety of weapons from the weapon store that eventually appears, with different specs (dagger= speed but lacks damage, great sword=damage, lacks speed, etc). And having the option for ranged weapons would have added a fun element as well, I believe.

I think any critiques I could have really are a compliment: this game is so good that it leaves you wanting MORE. I wish the mushroom forest was a whole world, I wish treasure chests gave more than just coins, I wish you gained exp from fights to level up and adjust stats. But none of these things were the point of Afterlife. In the end, the point was to be engrossed in a beautiful world, and to traverse a rich story about loss and how to move forward in it. For that reason this game deserves a solid 5/5. Great work.

What an incredible mobile game! 10/10

Took me back to Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past. This game has such a beautiful design. Artwork, music, storyline. Definitely got hard at some points and had a lot of unexpected turns. There’s something’s that are missing that leads me to believe there’s a sequel on the way. I hope so!

Finished my second playthrough

I’ve never been a defender of mobile games, but the way Afterplace was made feels the exact same quality as indie games on PC/Console - and it’s now one of my favorite!

There’s no way to describe how immersed I was on my first playthrough. The art, sound design, music, and especially the character design/humor does so much for it.

The controls are really intuitive, and the combat is really fun and engaging. Took a bit to get used to - probably bc I’m used to using a physical controller - but I never felt confused or frustrated with the controls like I do in other phone games.

Absolutely a must-play, and I hope to see more games like this! Will be following Evan on his future endeavors 👾

THIS GAAAAME OMG

If you are looking for a game that gives feels like Undertale, exploration like Yume Nikki, and story like something all of its own, this game is it. It feels like this game was made by a kindred spirit of the kid d that likes to go through a game to find all the little secrets.

Also, thank you so much for including the “invincible” setting without penalty, I know some might feel like that’s cheating, but it personally made it way more accessible and enjoyable.

Hidden Gem

So many things I love about this game. There’s very little direction, and the ‘figure it out yourself’ approach really makes it feel like your own unique adventure. Every time I thought I had seen it all I would find something surprising and new to explore. As someone who tends to quit games when they get too challenging, I was so glad to see an invisible mode as a toggle-able option. Story, characters, gameplay, all great and well executed. 10/10 game. Actually the Best

I have downloaded hundreds of iOS games. Literally. Paid for most of them. I’ve been searching for the best of them.

This is it.

If you want to feel the way you did when you were exploring in BotW, but mobile: this is your game. If you want the creativity and cleverness of Fez, but without taking itself so seriously, this is your game. If you want the care and attention to detail of Stardew Valley, but without the grind, this is your game.

If every developer was Evan Kice, mobile gaming would be so much more than it is.

Get on the bus now—this game is going to have a huge following

This game is a true gem and it is WILD to me it only has double digit review numbers as I am writing this!!! If you like LoZ/Undertale this is perfect but still awesome and unique from both of those. So many crazy moments of discovery and areas where I thought “this place is huge it can’t possibly keep going” and then it does. Give it a moment, everyone should be talking about and playing this game. 10/10

Review By a Human, Not a Vending Machine

As a hobbyist game dev, I find this game interesting, inspiring, and well done. A good mechanic is that the drinks are very fun to buy from the vending machine.

As a person, (I'm definitely a person, not a machine in disguise) I find this title warm and inviting, odd and intriguing, funny and beautiful. I especially like the vending machines.

I imagine that if I were a vending machine playing this game (I am totally human though) I would really appreciate the representation and the broad spectrum of good and bad vending machines.

I, as a human, (NOT a sentient dispenser of various snacks and liquids) want to go use a vending machine now, then I will play more of this game.

10/5 stars. (Btw most vending machines will take credit cards now so don't worry about bringing cash to the next vending machine you see. Though personally I love cash and imagine that vending machines like cash and coins more because they taste better then credit cards.)

Masterpiece

There are very few games that I write reviews for. Afterplace is taking going up on the Hall of Fame for one of my favorite gaming experiences of all time. I went into this download unassuming. I left with my heartwrenched and my jaw dropped. The entire experience of Afterplace, from start to finish, was a rollercoaster of perfection.

Sound design, world design, game design, mystery, story, exploration, gameplay, Dialogue. Everything in Afterplace hit the mark for what I would review a 5/5.

My only wish ONLY. WISH. Is that I could have MORE. I'll be eagerly waiting your next game Evan. No matter how long it takes, I'm sure the next project of yours is going to be another hit.

I am in love with this game

Evan if you’re reading this, thank you so much for making this game. I loved every bit of it. It really gave me the feeling that everything I did was discovering a secret. Many times I’d think, how is it possible that i NEEDED to do this to advance? It feels like I found a secret! My journey felt like my own, and was so fun and so cool.

My only complaint about this game would be that by the end, I felt like there were some plot points that I didn’t fully understand. Mainly, the time period between a long time ago, and when the game starts, from the main character’s perspective. I feel like maybe I could figure it out if I replayed and explored some more? But I hope this game gets really popular and some YouTuber just explains it to me 😂

Outstanding experience

From the beginning of the game through the end of the final credits, Afterplace is a pure delight. The sense of exploration and mystery as you uncover the strange world is amazing. The gameplay is great for casual mobile sittings, it seems to save your game every time you enter a new screen. Even the final boss is such a different experience from everything that has come before. Unbelievably impressive game from a single developer.

The Next Big Indie Game

If there is any justice in this world, this game will be the next Undertale, Omari, Lisa, etc. What an absolute surprise out of nowhere. The gameplay is tight and simple, the worldbuilding and story is constantly surprising and engaging, and the way it combines humor and dialogue into the gameplay is incredible. There were several times I was in tears and could not stop laughing out loud at how unbelievably funny it was. Buy this game. Just do it.

Desperately Needing More

Let me preface that I despise leaving reviews for things, but this game was absolutely worth it. I played it nonstop over the last few days. The story is great and unfolds as you travel. The dialogue with characters is entertaining and the gameplay itself is challenging but fun. I was genuinely sad when I finished it, only because I wanted more. Very impressed and have already had other friends download it and are loving it.

Simply Amazing

Initially the game seemed to be another generic Zelda-esque clone, but it does not take it long at all to develop its own flavor. The characters and world draw you in and I quickly found myself invested in them. I found myself chuckling along, cheering for, and feeling sorry for the different characters in the game. Doesn't take long for the game to wrap you up and it's an absolutely enjoyable ride all the way to the end. Highly recommend.
