Description

miRack is a Eurorack-style modular environment. It aims to provide user experience and audio quality close to those of the real Eurorack hardware. miRack can be used to build custom synthesizers and effects, control other apps and equipment, as a playground to explore and learn modular synths, and for live performances.
miRack is also available on macOS, including Audio Unit and VST plugins.
* Comes with more than 700 modules created by third-party developers and adapted for mobile devices by miRack team. New modules are added regularly.
* Includes AUv3 plugin. Can work as an instrument, audio effect or MIDI processor. Supports parameter automation to record and automate changes of almost any virtual module control.
* Multi-channel audio input and output (in both standalone and AUv3 modes), with full support for Expert Sleepers audio interface modules to integrate with hardware Eurorack equipment.
* MIDI input and output, including MIDI clock sync, and MIDI learn function. Automate and control your patch, or control other software and hardware instruments with powerful sequencer modules.
* Ableton Link support to synchronise with other music software on the same device or over network.
* iCloud support to sync patches between iOS and macOS app versions.
* Visit patchstorage.com/platform/mirack for inspiration and to share your patches.
Newer devices are recommended for better performance. Modules may vary greatly in CPU usage, the size of the patch your device is able run will depend on the modules used.

What's New in Version 3.70

miRack is a great intro to modular

If you are interested in modular synthesis, miRack is an economical way to dive in and explore. You'll be able to work with an array of modules and get a good overview of what the modular world has to offer in general all before you decide to put in a hundred or multiple hundreds of gold bricks into a practical system.
In miRack, you can probably find a virtual module very similar to what you want to buy in the real world, and figure it out, before you buy it. Or you may just get completely immersed in miRack and just go on creating patches in there, forevemore.

Not For Beginners!!! You are all on your own here!!

I am sure that this is a GREAT app!!! I have worked with this thing for months and I have gotten next to nowhere! It has no presets! NO HELP!! NO WELCOME TO MODULAR SYNTH TUTORIAL!! It doesn’t walk you though what a CV is. How to route a ADSR. And when you click on the manual to try to understand how to hook something up, it’s going to tell you about VOLTAGE!!! DO NOT GET THIS UNLESS YOU ALREADY KNOW WHAT YOU ARE DOING!!! I’ve watched videos, I’ve read articles and have failed with this app to achieve anything worth my investment in time. If you are a newbie, I suggest the Drambo or Model 15 apps. They include either a basic “welcome to modular synth” manual or teach you how to route things within the app.
With all of that being said, I really can’t take more than one star from this app. It’s so flexible. It has so many modules. The possibilities truly seems endless and I an jealous of anyone who could use this to even half its potential! The developer(s) are constantly dropping new updates and I’m not talking about those crappy “stuff is gonna work better in the background” updates. I’m talking real updates that directly improves the user’s experience.
Great job to all involved in this project. If you could please come up with something to teach a new person how to patch things or offer some getting started tips that would be more than amazing!!

Recent update changes everything

With the recent addition of search in the module browser my rack building has become faster and more intuitive.
Dev - please don’t refine the search filter. I like that it’s a simple text search. This allows for adjunct modules that might not be exact matches to me shown. (e.g. search for clock returns clock modulators and clockable delay)

it can too do polyphonic

This thing is awesome. It is a clone of VCVrack which is a software version of eurorack modular hardware. Mirack does not have all the modules availble for VCV rack but it has a large number of them. More than enough to build crazy patches. It has many of my favorites.
It's so much fun having this on the iPad. You could probably spend a lifetime using it. Don't listen to the guy who says it isn't polyphonic. A polyphonic synth can be built if that's your pleasure. Just gotta have the patience and the know how. At some point you'll max out the power of your iPad with this. If you ever used a synth and felt like I wish I had one more filter to run in parallel then this kit is your ticket. This app is completely worth the full asking price. Great value.

This doesnt work at all

Dozens of music production apps like BM3, aum, maschine, mpc... synths, fx you name it and this app wouldn’t even open properly. Only once managed to open a demo but it crashed after 30 seconds. In theory this is a cool app but maybe my 5th gen app is too old and all these 5 stars own ipad pros or something. Avoid avoid avoid.

Fleece my knees & grease my bees ...

I found my stinging bees (vibrating at variable voltages)
Sometimes you don’t realize what you are missing or that you’re missing anything at all until you go looking for the variable unknown. I’ve been involved in music making of all kinds for decades - from playing the drums, guitar, bass, and synths, in bands and in the studio to running live streams of mixes made on the fly in AUM to Mixlr that incorporate frequency filtering of found sound and reappropriating recorded political addresses with beats and effects - hammering the insanity we have in the top levels of government in the US ... but when I turned to this app I realized it was a supplement for my cptsd symptoms. It helps me relax when anxiety starts approaching the dangerous threshold. There’s something about loosely controlling the arbitrary nature of these devices, which if I had the cash I would surely be engaged in the real deal since the experience is just drastically different, but for a ten spot this is doing me just fine while giving me the knowledge of what I will need when I start buying individual modules for a real rack.

5 ⭐️’s +! This is a star making modular machine.

MiRack is hands down my favorite music app on the iPad and quite possibly on any device! I don’t make such statements casually, I truly mean it. I have spent more time just smiling in satisfaction tinkering with miRack than any app I can think of.
There may be a bit of a learning curve, and I admit I have hardly scratched the surface of the potential that exists here, but even random patching and accidental (mis)patching can yield some dynamic and awe inspiring sonic results. With audio in and out as well as midi and IAA, miRack can be a synth, and effects unit, a generative music device, and a magical mystery machine. Use it with AUM, and you have yourself a whole sonic universe to explore or destroy, your choice.
That said, is it perfect? No. Can I overlook its file management quirks. I can. No AU? I’ll survive. When I factor what this app does and is capable of, how much it costs, and how much pleasure I have managed to eek out of it, the value is bananas.
All of that said...
Best money I’ve ever spent on the App Store. Period. Well, this and Nave.
A big round of applause and gratitude to everyone whose hard work and creativity has gone in to making this port and its underlying code a reality. 👏👏👏
Edit: Now that it has been updated with AUv3 and the file management reworked, this is darn near as perfect a synth app as I could hope for.

Mobile Eurorack? Yes please!

I just started using this about a week ago but I've quickly fallen in love with it. It's easy to use, there are some great tutorials on getting some amazing results, it's portable and fun. What more could you ask for?
Well I have a few suggestions :)
- I'd like to have an undo and a redo feature added
- I'd like to have the ability to turn auto-save on and off so that if I reload a saved patch it's loaded at the saved state instead of the last state automatically
- I'd like the ability to sync to iCloud in addition to being able to save directly to iCloud

Isn't polyphonic.

In fairness, the description doesn't claim polyphony. But I suppose I've come to expect polyphony in any synth app, whether it is mentioned in the description or not.
I'm new to modular synths, and I didn't realize this wasn't polyphonic, until after I had already spent several days learning it, and had finally built my first working midi synth, and noticed it wasn't playing more than one note at a time. Spent another day trying to figure out which modules I would need to make it polyphonic, only to finally discover that there literally ISN'T any polyphony in this app.
Amazing modular synth. But pretty astonishingly useless if you are like me, and needed polyphony.
Looks like mirack is going into my "junk" folder, at least until polyphony is added, which might be never. But in the mean time, there are other modular synths available for iphone, which have polyphony.

Mixed Blessing

This app was based on VCVRack but without asking permission. Because VCVRack switched licensing model when it hit v1 this app is taken from an older version of that program so it isn’t as advanced as the latest VCV.
Crappy ethics aside it’s a good modular synth environment and the best i know of for ios (IMO).
One star for appropriating VCVRack without permission and being a jerk when confronted but it’s probably a 4 star app with room to improve.
Edit: more likely a 5 star app.

Awesome app!

Very cool, intuitive application that lets you explore the realms of modular without investing thousands of dollars!
I give it 4 stars because for some reason, the visuals for the knobs have been glitching out (the functionality still works) on MacOS and it won’t display the changes you are making. Once it has the hiccup, if you try to add a module to the rack, the faceplate UI with turn completely opaque.
Only work around I can currently do is to save the project, close the app, and reboot. However, the glitch has been fairly persistent. Hoping a patch can fix this.

Also, can midi out be supported?

Version 3.05
2020-05-14

Virtually NO documentation

You can look up details on some of these modules on the web, and you’ll have to as documentation here is extremely weak. Basic stuff like, how do I save the generated output as an audio file appears to be nonexistent. Modules have a “manual” link but so far all I’ve seen there for the most part is a phrase that restates what the module is which was obvious. I’ve not found a community forum and support on the developer’s site is just an email address. If it were a free app, that’s one thing, but as a $9.95 port of VCV rack, it’s the bare minimum. And attempting to save a wav file from the sampler crashed the program and lost my patch entirely.

Extraordinary sound from an extraordinary app by an extraordinary developer

What can I say? I think it’s extraordinary. Seriously. Modular synths are daunting (for me, at least), but the feature set, the frequency of updates, and the sheer number of basic and bizarre sounding modules makes it worth it. I’m blown away by the dedication of the developer to put so much effort and care into this.

Very good port of vcv

I’m loving this so far, def my favorite modular app on iOS. Can’t wait for the auv3 update. I would really love to see the alright devices modules ported over sometime in the future (chronoblob, twrex) and some more VCF’s (maybe even the free vult stuff (slap) But all in all this is quite a lot to get going with, thank you!

Thrilled to have this!

As a VCV Rack user I am thrilled to see this on iOS. A match made in heaven.
Given the multi touch limitations for module controls, midi control is extremely important for more performance oriented work. Currently I’m running a 2018 iPad Pro with an Arturia MiniLab MKii. Things seem to be working well.
It is amazing to have a giant euro rack modular running on batteries and fitting in my backpack, and saving my patches. MiRack is a dream come true. I hope MiRack will be a permanent addition to my iOS experience!

Another $10.00 for the iPhone version. Hmmmm.

I think the title says it all. Not only does this app require a BS in Electrical Engineering to get *any*sense of where to start, but there is a cultish air among users who have been posting about it. I’m sure that this complaint among the users who take the time to read this review a smile; “that’s another we’ve scared off”. Guess they’ve got their BS too.

Wow. A must-have endless musical sandbox.

I wanted a new synth for my iPad and came across this app. I watched some YouTube videos and thought it ‘might’ be okay. Well, I was wrong. This is my new number one app on iPad by FAR. It’s FANTASTIC and that’s an understatement. If you want to save yourself time, just get it now. Otherwise read on.
I caved and bought this app finally and I have a huge regret... I didn’t buy it sooner. This app is capable of doing pretty much ANYTHING on your iPad. Learn it, love it, master it. Want to create your own complex effects module to run audio through to use with other apps? You can do that. Do you want to create a live jam setup with a midi controller to control everything exactly as you intended? You can do that. Want to create your own unique synth with the sky as the limit? You can do that too.
And here’s the great thing I was worried about: it sounds FANTASTIC. It’s possible to make a lot of noise, but you can also create sounds nobody has ever heard before. Your in control to make it sound musical or harsh. It’s endlessly deep. There are super high quality unique modules included by a company called Mutable Instruments for real life euroracks that costs hundreds of dollars each. Well most of them are all included here, faithfully since the source code was released for them, and you can create as many instances as your heart desires (or the CPU allows). These modules are capable of extremely complex sounds and noises that will inspire you. I would have purchased this app for these modules ALONE yet there’s hundreds and hundreds MORE to add to them. It’s insane really.
At this price, for what you get and what you can do, its an absolute steal. Just buy the thing, don’t be a fool. You need this on your iPad. And if you feel lost or overwhelmed, please don’t give up and learn how to use it. There are YouTube videos that will help you create your first patches, and once you get it, the sky is seriously the limit.
PS - Thanks to the developer for bringing such a powerful monster of an app to the iPad.
Joleliscious
2019-12-16

This is *SO* awesome!

I love the UI. Everything feels so organized and not chaotic at all. The wires are perfectly made not to obstruct the view, so you can clearly see the labels and controls. There’s even an option to hide them, but they haven’t bothered me yet. I stumbled upon this app through YT about a month ago, and was a bit reluctant to buy it, because I already got couple of other “wired” modular synths, and they get zero usage. Well that is so not because they have a bad sound, it’s because I don’t like their UI. This miRack has a very pleasant UI. Easy to see everything on a 10.5” iPad, zoom in to get to actual knobs... just well designed with user in mind.
You can use this as an instrument, play with any controller keyboard. Or you can put it into FX slot as IAA, to process the sound in many interesting ways...
One huge request for the developers though: please make a polyphonic module, Playing like 8 note would be really cool for some patches.
Oh and one more request, please make the patches manual-only save. We all love to experiment, and when you do that, it’s easy to get carried away and mess your good patch, or maybe come up with something completely new that’s also good. So pressing save/“save as” can be of great help! :)

This is so sweet

It blows the mind how vcv rack emulates these awesome modules but I’ve come to understand that the modules are just little things doing computations of their own which OF COURSE should be able to be emulated by a larger computing device then in a way [sand-boxed]?? and they were little modules, independent of the larger rack and almost sentient.
It’s honestly a mind-numbing concept all together once you wrap your head around all that this represents. Here- I was stumped at how the f was I going to be able fiddle with all these awesome modules in real life...then out poops VCV but try as might, I couldn’t figure out how to DL the awesome modules.
Out poops MiRack and includes 500 or so modules ! I’m like ~damn- I can go like a week without talking to my girlfriend, no PROBLEM. DANGEROUS. I gotta try to keep this one, she’s the best ever.
It’s very deep is what I think I’m trying to say.

Latest Update Restores Faith

The developer has added a lot of new features and modules so hopefully all of the startup challenges will be a thing of the past.
Old Review:
The VCV Rack developer was able to successfully pressure the miRack developer into removing all of the original basic/fundamental modules. This has broken every patch I’ve made. Right now they’re a bunch of yellow rectangles with cables attached without any text describing which module they were.
Many of the modules do not have a description. Presumably if you’re already a VCV Rack user, these modules will already be familiar. I do not feel comfortable or optimistic about this app as the dispute with the VCV Rack developer means I do not feel ethical about using their website to find out how to use modules I don’t know how to use in miRack. The miRack developer doesn’t really have much of any support information on his website.
At this point I’ll just wait to see if the miRack developer is able to provide better support for the app, otherwise I feel it’s not worth my time to learn more about it. Perhaps the VCV Rack developer might pressure Apple into crippling miRack even more?

Better and Better with each Update

With the latest introduction of Plateau Reverb I’m pretty happy. I wonder how far this port will be developed, which thus far seems to be moving along quite quickly! I’m seriously impressed with the speed at which the developer responds to requests and gets things implemented, with IAA it becomes possible to now process things using external plugins for some final polish. I’ve also tested out sending MIDI from Patterning 2 and that works great. I’m excited to see where this ends up, its an extremely fun app.

This is easily one of the best music apps on iOS. There are other “modular” apps which are OK but this is killer! Saved me getting a hardware modular!

Modular Playground on IOS!

MiRack is just a terrific modular experience on the IPad! For example, the Mutable Instruments clones sound fantastic and are simply a delight to mess around with. Modular synthesis can have a steep learning curve, but thanks to numerous VCV Rack tutorials on the internet you can get up to speed fairly quickly on how to make patches.
I hope this app continues to receive support as it really sounds and feels like your working with real modular gear in ways other apps just can not match. Moog Model 15 is outstanding but it is not even a quarter as flexible in routing and sound design as MiRack. The control voltage routing options alone are almost limitless. Honestly, MiRack could easily be used to teach a full year course on electronic music if one desired to do so. It is that authentic and true to real modular hardware.
Needs AU3 support, IAA or Audiobus like yesterday. Would love additional modules like Plateau (lush reverb) to be added. Even reasonably priced modules for purchase would be a fantastic way to always upgrade the app. As is, it is easily a 5 star app that can take you places only $10,000 worth of gear or more could take you previously. Kudos to the developers for bringing VCV Rack to IOS!

A Sound Erector Set!

Update: I missed that this app is stand alone only! That’s useless for me. I’m leaving the 5-stars, for now, because they said that they plan to add IAA or AUv3 later.
——
Anyone remember the 1950s metal Erector Sets that you could make anything with if you had imagination (and enough parts)? This is the audio equivalent!
I bought the app and was grumbling to myself about no documentation and everything is so small and I can’t figure out how to remove a module once put in place.
Then I found the zoom! LOL And hour later (and a forgotten TV baseball game) and I’m snug, hid away, building my Erector Set Sound. (Still don’t know how to remove a module.)
More fun (and more challenging) than the Moog Model 15 since miRack is an open architecture.

Been dreaming of this...

Been using vcv racks, and was always hoping for a touch screen version. So well made, module selection and all...
Top notch product, pure awsomeness!
Thx :-))

Great Start

This is a great start, however, it is missing multiple audio channel out and MIDI out. Other than that, this is pretty great so far, and I can’t wait to see where this project is going!

Nice start, needs more audio routing

Update: Please add the ability to lock a module in place. I find often when I’m trying to move a knob, the module suddenly jumps to another place in the rack.
Great port of VCV rack. Adding the advanced audio module from Fundamental pack that would allow inter app audio and Audiobus would make this 5 stars.

Whoa

This thing is awesome. Works pretty good on my 5 year old iPad. I can’t imagine how much better it would be on a current model. Makes me want to buy an iPad Pro.

Awesome - if modular is your thing!

Almost 300 modules out of the box to experiment with. No internal documentation for the modules, but since they’re open-source we shouldn’t have much trouble looking them up online. Excellent kit value for the price!

The app works great!

It was a long time waiting something like that for iPadOS. The touchable interface makes the experience nicer if we compare with the desktop. So happy. Thanks!

Amazing synth modules!

There's a lot to get lost in here! I am flabbergasted at the wealth of synth toys here. I haven’t loaded it up yet but it’s running great on my orig iPad Pro. This is a must have synth app.

Looks great but how to use it???

I love great and innovative music making ideas, but maybe provide some sort of guide or video tutorials on how to use this for complete beginners. I thoroughly support developers that come up with brilliant ways to create new sounds and music but never assume that everybody knows how to use your app. Please help us get started!

Everything I’ve been waiting for.

Performs great. The details were clearly thought through and the interface is nicely optimized for touch. Plenty of modules to choose from, including many of the ones I’ve already used often.
Hard to believe it’s just the first release. Can’t wait to see what future updates bring!

Nice port of vcv rack could use some info tho

Port works great, touch interaction seems to work well.
Everything is running smooth on iPad air2 which is pretty old now so that’s great. I would love to see some info in the app such as cpu load, audio info such as sample rate , buffer and latency info, and audio interface options. I’ve yet to try it with my es8 for interacting with my modular yet...
I REALLY hope this app will continue to be supported.
I’ll be following it closely. Fluxwithit
