Same Expensive monthly charge yet limited app experience

$19.99 monthly charge is Very expensive. Comparing with Hydrow’s major competitors on the market, is it the most expensive with least amount of features and content.
There is only one audio mix option allowing user to turn off music completely. The other 3 commenting and music audio mixes offer Very poor voice/music audio balance.
========
Rowing content is good but with the same monthly charge, the app users only receive very limited experience. One of the biggest drawback is the audio quality. The app doesn’t allow users to switch volumes btw coaches and music while Hydrow rowers offer this. The audio balance is really really poor. This app is a rip off.

Favorite app for rowing, with one problem.

I started the 30 day trial on the Hydrow app after I got my WaterRower. Rowing with instructors who are coaching on the water is motivational for me. Feels like your rowing with a buddy who occasionally will challenge you to row harder. In fact i liked it so much that I rowed 15,000m the first day I used the app. Not bragging, in fact I don’t suggest you row that far your first day. Ha ha
Currently I try to row 4000-6000m every day. I’m also in the process of trying another rowing app that is studio based. Totally different coaching style. While it’s a quality alternative, I’m more aware of time. On the Hydrow app I lose track of time and enjoy the row more.
So what’s the problem with the app? I don’t have a Hydrow rower and the app won’t sync with non Hydrow monitors. If they added this function it would be a game changer.
I did a lot of research on rowers, and Hydrow was always a top pick, but I knew I didn’t have room for the Hydrow in my 600sq ft condo. I had to go for a smaller rower that would be easy to store.
Please add the ability to sync non Hydrow monitors to the app and it would definitely be a 5 star app. If you throw in the Leaderboard, that would be amazing too.

And it got even worse

Removing 2 stars from my previous review since the app no longer shows video at full res on iPad. Guys, this is Mickey Mouse functionality here. If your app isn’t capable of dealing with screen orientation, compile separate versions for portrait iPhone and landscape iPad. Now I see either a cropped portrait mode video or a half-res or smaller landscape mode video that doesn’t fill the screen.
I’m still paying $20 a month for a broken app that doesn’t integrate with other devices like every other app at this price point? Not much longer. Do better or I’m out the door like my friends who used to subscribe. Being taken for granted by developers is not motivating.
Previous: I love the workouts, and rowing among with the instructors on the water is spectacularly motivating. But there's absolutely ZIP ZERO NADA integration with other equipment like my water rower, and you don't even allow users to enter their stats after a workout for personal tracking. For $20 a month that's a baseline function. Even Peloton lets you use other bikes in their classes, and for only a bit over half your monthly fee.

Great rower. Horrible iPad app

The rower is great but if you are going to offer off rower exercises you should have a great iPad app. I would love to do some strength and yoga from my iPad but it is too small. I use Apple Fitness+ instead.

No full screen on iPad

If you look at the reviews they are all a year old. The app gives you an iPhone size in the horizontal mode on the iPad. I contacted Hydrow, set them screen shots and no response. I contacted Apple and they confirmed it’s a developer issue. So just be aware you are not going to get a full picture on your iPad, just the iPhone size

Could be 5 stars

2 issues that seem to be easy fixes. Paying $38 a month to be a member but have to use the app when traveling. it should do these things.
1) app does not adjust for iPad. It stays small like I am on a phone screen.
2) if I put the phone or iPad sideways you lose the clock on the bottom.
Come on developers fix these problems they are basic requirements for any modern app!

Hydrow has been a game changer

I know I’m only 13 and I am a little big but the rowing machine has really opened up a lot of opportunity, the athletes are very inspiring and to be honest I used to have that maybe I’ll try to workout tomorrow mindset but now I’m doing 3 lessons a day starting from a 6 am, to a 4 pm, and an 8 pm one, it has improved my health and happiness. I would highly recommend and I hope that the people on here inspire you too.

Awesome Program, Horrible App

As someone who has a different rower, I paid the $20/month for the app about a year ago but decided to cancel my subscription after a few months for a few reasons. The biggest issue to me was there is no support for an iPad version. The next issue is the workouts themselves are great, but the selection is still (a year later) not that vast. I had a small selection of my favorite workouts, but doing them repeatedly got old, fast. Finally, the cost— I would resume my subscription if it were $10-12/month rather than $20. $20 to me is just too high, especially when there are plenty of other apps and YouTube channels emerging that are equally as good, WITH iPad support, all of which provide a greater library of workouts.

No health kit but good product

Just opened and setup. $39 is steep for a single workout equipment membership but your do get quality. But add that to lack of apple health kit integration (really over $2000 equipment and $450 per year subscription costs) meaning a major component of my circuit training can’t be tracked is pathetic. If you want to pay luxury prices for the best, then we should get the best including integration with HealthKit. I mean really, Hydrow even has an APP yet skipped integration with the device the goes on. Stupid and very annoying. Add Health kit and other integrations. No one developed products in silos anymore.

Lacks Health Kit Integration

The App lacks basic integration into Apple’s Health Kit, thus making it extremely difficult to include your Hydrow workouts with the rest of your workout regiments and holistic health data.
Please fix this Hydrow! Implementation of this development kit is very straightforward. There’s really no reason to not support it.

I love hydrow 🤗

I love hydrow but there are a few things I would change.
I would love if it had a messaging system to meassage 1 on 1 with the athletes to ask for tips etc
And other I would love to add would be a reporting option
There’s another member that had the exact same user name that I do but only with periods and they asked to be on a team with me this really made me feel uncomfortable and unsafe so please fix that
As I said I love hydrow and with a couple of these changes it would be perfect thanks for your time!

Non- hydrow machine user. Great app

Am new to rowing but in relatively good shape. Have a water based rowing machine and use the app on ipad. Love that i can search for workout that fits my goal for the day. Love the visual and instructors. Love that the basics are reinforced in every workout. Only criticism would be that there is no way to track my progress or know if where i am at is normal or i should push harder.

Added Closed Captioning for More Rowing Videos?

I absolutely love my new hydros rowing machine and all its offerings. The one minor improvement in my experience would be to make all videos closed captioning so I can at times continue to follow what the instructors are saying while listening to my own songs and keeping audio muted. Presently only some of the videos have this feature. Is this something in the works. Thank you for the great app LOR experience otherwise🚣‍♀️😉

Fantastic workout, app needs work

I love and at the same time am frustrated by this app. The workouts are great and the scenery is gorgeous! But the app comes with downsides, namely that there is zero integration with any other equipment and, my primary issue, there is no iPad version. I’m sure this is because they want you to purchase the Hydrow itself, but my Concept2 is going to last forever and I can’t in good conscience get rid of a functional piece of equipment. The other rowing and exercise apps have iPad options (and city row offers integration with other machines) - and they are all rated higher than Hydrow with more votes. Please make these improvements that people have been asking for consistently.

Love the workouts but wish it integrated with my equipment

I absolutely love the workouts. The instructors are great. I downloaded the app based on my neighbor’s recommendation because she has the Hydrow. The workouts keep me motivated! I’m rowing almost every day. The downside is that the app does not integrate with my concept2. Honestly, I would be happy paying a higher monthly premium if I could participate in personal tracking and the leaderboard. Is this something that will be offered in the future?

Poor integration with Apple Health or Strava

I love the classes, but I’m very disappointed with the limited integration with Strava and lack of integration with Apple health. Also, the lack of visibility into heart rate data and output/split over the course post-workout is frustrating. I expected functionality similar to the Peloton app, and I’m still hoping the feature set will improve over time.

Love/Hate

Love the workouts but I wish there was more integration with the app. I already have a WaterRower so I can’t justify buying another rower. It would be nice to track metrics on Hydrow’s app through the S4 monitor and heart rate from my Apple Watch. I don’t want the socks or water bottle, just a little tiny bit of integration, please.

App is good. Needs Apple Health integration & AppleTV app

The Hydrow app on iPhone works well and does what you’d expect it to do:
- browse a catalog full of workouts on and off the rower
- follow others and have them folllow you
-displays workout history, achievements, badges, stats
If you have the rower, then the app isn’t as important as the built in monitor shows you all the data.
Yes, you can use the app for mat work, which makes it handy when you’re away from the rower.
The app doesn’t support Apple Health natively. This means that I have to use the supported Strava integration, which’s acts as a middle man for Apple Heath. The issue with this is Strava doesn’t support rowing and it imports the rowing event as “ Other”
If I use the Workouts app on the watch, I get data, but the HR Monitor on the watch doesn’t display on the screen.
A native Hydrow Apple Watch app would be awesome if it worked with the Android OS.
Lastly, an AppleTV app would be great for workouts that are off the rower.
Peloton has a all of these options covered and it allows for a great overall customer experience.
This review is for the iOS app and is also a list of enhancements. It’s not rating the rowing exercise experience at all. (It’s wicked good, in case you were wondering)

Please Add Target S/M to Videos!

Really like the app! I don’t own a hydro but have been using this app to plan workouts.
One huge drawback for me is that there’s no target S/M displayed during videos. While the instructors are great it’s sometimes hard to listen to cues which degrades the workout experience.

Please add search function

Love the app and workouts, but there is no search function. Seems like a no-brainer to add. If I wanted to find a “beginner”, “pyramid”, or even “yoga” workout, I have to manually scroll through hundreds of workouts to find them. The current filter function is just too vague.

A Highly-capable App Developed to Deliver Incredible Training and Coaching

In my experience, delivering high-quality coaching can be exceedingly difficult and when you can’t see the eyes of the athletes you are training, it’s even more challenging. I’ve observed Hydrow’s instructors teach and coach for awhile and, as someone somewhat new to rowing, I’ve learned first-hand how Hydrow significantly differentiates itself through its teaching and reinforcing of rowing technique, quality of coaching, and inspirational motivation.
In technically and physically demanding activities, I’ve learned that technique plays a critical role in reducing the risk of injury and aiding recovery. Hydrow accomplishes this through it’s extremely high-quality videography of their instructors who are both highly skilled teachers and possess extensive on-water rowing experience. In EVERY class Hydrow’s instructors go over technique-related points of emphasis for both new and advanced participants which are reinforced throughout the session but what differentiates Hydrow is the instructors draw on their rowing experiences to understand what participants may thinking or struggling with despite not being able to see participants during the session. But to draw on their insights the instructors had to both prepare a plan for the session AND spend time reflecting on what the participants could struggle with so that they could tailor their insights to the session. I’ve not finished a single class which left me with the thought the session was an improv session. For some of us it may also be worth noting good rowing technique also improves performance.
Periodically during a session instructors will share a personal anecdote or talk about a training or personal setback which they have faced and explore the topic without being uncomfortably emotional and results in stirring some healthy personal introspection - this is extremely difficult to do given the wide range of personalities in a class. If a coach is a teacher who wants and is willing to take people where they thought they couldn't go or who can help someone take on what they didn’t want to do in order to get to where they want to go, then Hydrow’s instructors are highly qualified coaches.
Hydrow significantly differentiates itself through its innovative outdoor teaching delivery approach. After dealing with a debilitative back injury for almost eight years, I took up rowing after a close friend observed, “if kayaking helps you with your back so much, why don’t you try rowing?” I knew my friend’s insight was spot on but I also recognized I find kayaking engaging because of the beauty I experienced from being outside on water during the paddle. Candidly, I’m not sure if I’d be able to maintain a rowing plan over a sustained period of time without the inspiration derived from being able to visualize the workout being outside, and thanks to Hydrow I won’t have to find out if I could. Hydrow’s highly skilled instructors teach a well-planned and well-thought out class which is also recorded and added to their extensive library on a body of water somewhere throughout the U.S. and in England, Scotland, or another destination I have yet to explore but look forward to during Chicago’s gloomy winter. I suspect France, Australia, or other inspiring destinations are on Hydrow’s agenda and actually empathize with whomever has to decide which instructors get to go and teach & train in those new destinations. What I’m trying to say is Hydrow provides me with sustainable and inspirational motivation that really engages my imagination; I also like the challenge of trying to get through Hydrow’s extensive, organized, and literally unending library.
It’s probably healthy for me to admit I initially resisted considering Hydrow, in part because the Company is periodically discussed and confused with trendy exercise alternatives. But my research and experience bear out what I’ve observed numerous world-class athletes describe in chat rooms, bulletin boards, and uncompensated reviews: it’s not hyperbole to say Hydrow’s new rower is a generationally-transformative step forward from preceding rowers. The combination of Hydrow’s innovative and high-quality instruction and it’s advanced rower is how Hydrow effected a legitimately transformational change (my ErgRower is not yet one-year-old and is why I haven’t also upgraded to Hydrow’s rower; for now I am extremely appreciative and content to pay for the digital subscription).
There are many more real reasons why you should consider Hydrow’s app; if you are an experienced rower or are just now taking up rowing, hopefully at a minimum I’ve evidenced why Hydrow’s digital-only subscription is worth the incremental cost over competing rowing programs. And if you are able to buy a Hydrow rower and become a digital subscriber, don’t hesitate because it is highly unlikely that you will end up regretting your decision.

Hydrow is the best....period

I like many bought my Hydrow when the world shut down and my gym was gone. Seven months later, I still row five days a week, and love my Hydrow. It is the very best exercise I have ever found, and, the athletes are great. I thought I would care less about the live in person row, but, I was dead wrong. I love it, and I find it something that has changed my life! The app to is great. Tracks my work, allows me to see my friends and family, and, tracks my meters, performance, etc.....This company does it right, my friends all tell me I should work for them as I rave about it to everyone.

Good but not great

The classes are great but the connected health features are lacking and that is one of the reason you would want a machine like this. Do an upgrade and make sure you connect with Apple IOS health. Engaging App (you can filter now!)

I do not own a Hydrow Rower so was looking for something to keep me more engaged and focused while rowing. This app hits the spot. My only criticism so far is it does not seem to be iPad compatible. Needs update

Are there plans to have a dedicated iPad app? I like the concept of having outdoor rowing videos for the scenery alone but the app could use a UI refresh in addition to a dedicated iPad app. Trying to use the app made for your phone on a tablet is a poor experience.

Best rowing app I’ve found !

Amazing app! Unfortunately I have a different water rower that I bought prior to learning about hydrow but the work ups are the best . The visuals are great I like thinking I’m rowing outside. Great choices. You may not feel like doing a power work up but you can still do a breathe and get your meters in! They are very receptive I missed not having the opportunity to do airplay and now they have provided that!! I can’t wait to try Pilates on the mat workouts with them. Talented athletic coaches !! Very inspiring. I wish I could track my meters with them but I’m not buying another water rower at this time.
Totally worth the monthly charge! Much cheaper than a gym membership. TOTALLY FIVE STARS!! motivates me to work out daily. Now you can filter through workouts to find your favorite coach or type of workout. Great job Hydrow

Awesome

I have owned a rower for awhile and just couldn’t get going. I was struggling with whether or not to upgrade to a Hydrow machine, but was worried that I would still not use it. This app is a perfect gateway! There are some features and benefits that aren’t available, such as live leaderboards, machine connectivity, but I didn’t expect there to be. The content is great and well produced. The best endorsement of all is that I am now consistently rowing. I would like to see slightly better filtering, but I would think it’s coming down the road. Highly recommend this app as a “try it before you buy it” app if you already have a rower.

Great athletes

I have a WaterRower but I’m not a fan of studio workouts like those found with CitRow Go. Hydrow has great athletes and a great variety of workouts on and off the rower. I do wish there was a way to connect my club rower to the app so my stats were all recorded in one place, but Strava helps with that.
My only complain about the app itself is that it doesn’t translate well to my iPad. Specifically, the orientation doesn’t change with the iPad. This means I’m trying to read the app sideways while my iPad is in landscape position on my rower until the class starts. The streaming is in the proper orientation, at least.
Also, I agree with the reviewer who wishes there was a way to filter the classes by things like instructor, duration, music type, etc.

Desperately needs music streaming support

Love the workouts, absolutely hate that I cannot stream Spotify or anything else while in the Hydrow app. It just pauses. Have to find another device and stream from it while rowing in Hydrow. Great classes poor app

This review is written by someone who doesn’t own a Hydrow but spends $20 a month on the classes through the app for use with my water rower. Many hydrow classes are great - that is where my 3 stars come from, but the app isn’t polished and is frustrating to use during a workout. It doesn’t have native streaming to a television. It’s possible to mirror through an Apple TV but that does t work reliably. There’s also no way to filter classes, forcing you to scroll through all classes to find what you’re looking for. There are no options for on screen metrics like instructor stroke rate or elapsed time. Most frustrating, if you do want to touch the screen to pause or check elapsed time, the class will often just end and ask how you to rate the class. Forcing you to restart and scroll to where you were. Hydrow needs to study the peloton app which is a perfect example of good app design and functionality. Peloton has a small button that says end workout and that doesn’t come up until you’ve touched the screen. Please Hydrow - add filtering , screen casting and make it more difficult to end a workout.

Mainly for Hydrow machines. (If that wasn’t obvious)

First off not a hydrow user (concept 2) so my experience is probably not ideal. The videos are nice but for $20/mo was hoping you’d get more on screen guides or at least sync with the PM5 automatically so I can earn rewards and badges. Glad there’s a 30-day trial though so I could figure this out before spending any cash.

No Ability To Filter Classes

First and foremost, this app is fantastic. There are hundreds of options ranging from a beginner “Learn How To Row” series to advanced series designed to push you to new PRs. The fitness instructors are all high-energy, friendly, and knowledgeable as well as diverse in gender, body type, and background. As I mentioned before, there are hundreds of classes and it seems like Hydrow will continue to add to their already impressive library.
My only criticism (and the reason I docked the app a star) is that there are no search or filter options. I’d love to be able to find way classes by time, location, class type, class level, max stroke rate, etc. As I am a n00b, I am mostly interested in 20-minute beginner classes with a 28 max stroke rate. Hydrow has tons of these classes; however, I have to spend a good 5-10 minutes scrolling scrolling scrolling to find them. Hopefully, this will be fixed soon in a future update.

The Best Rower Ever

Hydrow is ergonomic, smooth, makes me work harder and more efficiently than any other rowers I've had in the past 14 years.
The Program has a variety of destinations and intensities. I love row in Miami and Boston. I've tried 6 different trainers, all very engaging. You can never get bored!
The interface, design and features are user friendly and so cool.
I'm passioned indoor Rower, had tried different rowers and apps before and was very disappointed with far too many bugs and bad customer service. Many times I built my own programs and rowed alone, better than frozen apps... now I'm in good hands! Thank you so much, guys! Lots of success to you! You deserve it!

Infinite upgrade from the standard erg

Couldn’t recommend Hydrow more. Whether a “real rower” or fitness enthusiast, it gives you the same mechanics and basic metrics as the erg but is so much more engaging with olympic quality instructors and let’s you track data and progress over time.
Highly recommend.

State of the art machine

I love it. It is on my 3 best cardio machines list. Is not just rowing but learn how to do it plus compete against you and others

Best exercise machine EVER!

The app is a solid beginning that replicates what you see on the machine. Looking forward to new features, but they’ll be “icing on the cake” for this great connected rower.
