Welcome to WikiArt.org, the online home for visual arts from all around the world.

Aim of the project

Our primary goal is to make world’s art accessible to anyone and anywhere. WikiArt already features some 250.000 artworks by 3.000 artists, localized on 7 languages. These artworks are in museums, universities, town halls, and other civic buildings of more than 100 countries. Most of this art is not on public view. With your active involvement, we are planning to cover the entire art history of the Earth, from cave artworks to modern private collections. We also provide you with tools for translation on as many languages as needed.

Financial status

The project is non-profit. We use donation and advertising as financial sources to cover hosting and technical service expenses. The content of the site is launched for free by our Volunteer Team – and you are welcome to join it. Check out ‘Donate’ and ‘ how to contribute’ section to know more about it.

WikiArt presents both public domain and copyright protected artworks. The latter are showcased in accordance with fair use principle:

as historically significant artworks

as used for informational and educational purposes

as readily available on the internet

as low resolution copies unsuitable for commercial use

We respond to notices of alleged copyright infringement and remove copyright protected artworks, or block them for users from countries where infringement is alerted. But mostly we try to get artist’s permission to demonstrate his art, and confirm it with a credit line.

We provide information to help copyright holders manage their intellectual property online. If you think somebody is violating your copyrights and want to notify us, please submit the notice by wikipaintings@gmail.com

Lazy implementation. Barbones

I've been waiting years for the basic functionality of having the artwork rotate when my phone is in landscape. Supporting basic orientation has been expected fictionally since iOS 1. Why the dev would think it's ok to show beautiful artwork in one orientation only is crazy. Thoughtless.

It’s worse than you might think

I wanted to learn more about the indigenous (aka Native) American artist T. C. Cannon, who died in 1978, aged only 31. The New York branch of the Smithsonian is currently showing his work; the single painting reproduced in Peter Schjeldal’s review of the show (The New Yorker, 4/15/2019, pp. 80-81) is a stunner. Multiple searches, including the artist’s name (as spelled above), his chosen Native American name, and general terms such as “Native American Artists,” came up with “No Artists.” In graduate school I specialized in medieval studies, with a taste in art to match. But, come on—people all over the world make great art. Have you got anything from the caves of Lascaux? From the tombs of Ancient Egypt? How about those winsome woodcarvings from Easter Island? My online profile has favorites, added artists, etc but this app does not give me the option to sign in to my WikiArt account which is what I was looking for.

Great content

Really not up to par yet.

I’ll start by saying there’s some serious potential here. I love having access to a database like this and the images are mostly great quality.

Regarding content, collections are largely incomplete and a great deal of artists aren’t on here.

Regarding features, it is easy to lose your place in the search, hitting the back button often takes you to the top or beginning instead of where you left off. You cannot favorite or follow an artist (only the art), but this doesn’t really matter anyway because the app does not sync with the website version - which is totally useless.

Wonderful resource, easy to explore artists

This is a great app with bios, artwork, a search feature and period/movement categories to just explore. I really like to look up pieces I love when I’m at a museum and favorite them to learn more about later. Wholeheartedly recommended.

key thing to implement

hey, just downloaded this app which is something i’ve really needed to look for. just thought for all the different genres, you could have a little background to them with like a paragraph. for example, “impressionism” you could have the time period and main figures involved in it. other than that it looks cool can’t wait to dive in

Great App - Missing Critical UX Features

The app is great, searching images and artist. It misses few critical user experience feature. Additionally it’s not really wiki as the end user cannot add or contribute to the contents as the wiki is supposed to do. The UX features missing include:

1.) Ability to Like / Favorite.

2.) Ability to create different collections of your favorite art.

3.) No Wiki details about the artist, the painting, the style, period. Link to Wikipedia page.

4.) Inability for people to save / make wallpaper on their phone for art.

5.) Events / Museums Info where people can go and see that particular art.

6.) Curated Audio review / criticism of art / artist for each image.

This leaves the user with a shallow experience and searching for another app that could provide the very basic feature for a great user experience. There was another app called “Wiki Art” that used to have some of these features but it’s no longer maintained.

Can’t save images?

I loved previous versions of an app by this name, but this one seems to have lost all the functionality. Yes, you can look up works and artists, but there is no way to create a collection (eg. of favourites) and without that it’s no better for me than simply googling.

Why no the year painted?

It would be soooooo nice if it tells me the year the work of arts are made... I cannot appreciate the works only with the artist’s name and the work itself. Explanations on each or some works might trouble some copyright issue, but the year... won’t!

In previous versions I could download art and use as screen backgrounds. I don’t believe that option is available anymore.

Love previous versions of this app. One of my favorite features was to download full resolution images. Doesn’t look like that option is available anymore. Makes it hard to share great art through the ages that I’ve come to love. Still enjoy looking and learning, but sharing is harder.

Not what I expected

My WikiArt app wouldn’t cooperate so I deleted it and downloaded it again because there were no updates. It turns out this is nothing like before. Don’t get me wrong, this still has several pieces from various artists throughout history but I can’t share any like I could before. In conclusion, I’m disappointed how this app turned out.
