Description
Cuespeak is a speech and language therapy workstation produced in the UK. It is designed primarily for use by speech and language pathologists (SLPs) working with adults with acquired neurogenic communication difficulties such as aphasia, apraxia of speech and their associated cognitive difficulties. Although its potential is greatest when configured by a SLP as part of a full therapy program, it is designed also to be accessible to users who are unable to access the support of a SLP service.
Cuespeak allows the creation of a bespoke program of exercises for each individual. The steadily growing exercise library addresses semantics, phonology, word-finding, spelling and sentence processing, as well as some of the cognitive difficulties underlying language impairment. The exercises are designed to be attractive, engaging and motivating, and are peppered with gentle humor. The app uses a mixture of photographs and cartoon illustrations, and a mixture of synthetic speech and real audio. The use of synthetic speech allows us to include a large amount of spoken feedback on errors, and a large number of verbal cues to facilitate spoken word production.
All exercises can be configured using parameters such as the number of sounds in a word, syllable number, initial and final sounds of words, word frequency and topic area covered. Presets are available to simplify the process for users without SLP support.
Cuespeak has been produced in a collaboration between Jon Hunt, a UK SLP with 25 years' clinical experience working with adults with aphasia, and Robin Keech, programme designer for Disobedient Media.
Cuespeak is free to download and use without restrictions. However, home users are invited to contribute to the further development of the app by making a voluntary monthly subscription. Cuespeak is a not-for-profit project. All revenue from subscriptions is re-invested in further development of the app.
Cuespeak offers optional auto-renewing subscription based in-app purchases to support future development and content.
