Great game.

- In all honesty, this game is very fun and hardly gets boring. + When it does I feel like it could have used maybe other modes such as side scroller type levels or something like that. (It’s just my opinion but this game is still great.) =One issue though is that the music does stop working even if the music in options is on. That’s the only problem with this game.

Such a great game!

I fell in love with this game on Switch and got it immediately once I found out it was on the App Store.
The game utilizes the extra vertical space of the iPhone screen perfectly and I can’t praise the game design enough. It does what I love to see in games, takes a simple concept/idea and creates a game around it.
The very simple art direction and color palette make the colors and sprites pop and help you track everything going on when you’re falling at high speeds.
Brilliant game!

Big hands make left/right movement terribly uncomfortable on iPad

Love Downwell, and the extra screen real estate of an iPad makes sense for it, but unfortunately there’s no way to reposition the buttons so they fit where your thumbs fall.
If you have big hands, your only option is to keep them uncomfortably open to reach the left button, or not play at all. Basic customization would be super simple to implement and extremely appreciated.

Love the game, but…

No problems with controls, runs great in the state it’s in now (mid-2021), but any chance of getting Game Center achievements? The PS4 version where I first played this has them and it really gave the game that extra bit of replay value (not that it DOESNT, beating it alone is a challenge), but achievements is that extra little bit of go-to to keep me coming back. Please?

Love the game but can’t figure out how to get the music to play

I’m loving this game. It’s an innovative game and Nintendo like in its multiuse moves and items that do two things. However even when I have BGM turned on, I don’t get any background music. I have my volume turned up and have tried reinstalling the game but to no luck. Anyone have any suggestions?

One of the best

There are only 2 games I’ve ever played more than a month or two on iOS and this is one of them.
Simple, challenging, addictive, and most importantly, elegant gameplay. I never get frustrated with the controls, rare for a mobile game. I like how easy it is to get back in to another game after you die, similar to hotline miami. No ads, nothing to buy to make the game less frustrating, just a simple, fun game you can enjoy for years.

I love the game a lot, but the precision it seems to require from the player is frustrating at times. Love the game

The game is great but what I really think it’s missing is a mute mode, the sound doesn’t fully mute when I’m jamming to music and I still hear the game sounds and sound fx. No hate to them but it’s always bothered me when I’m at work jamming out and I want to play this game but with the noise it makes it’s always too overpowering. Other than that love the game! Good game, one ding

The game is great and I love that they finally added controller support but it seems the update is missing one key feature to make it a great gaming experience on iOS, and that’s cloud saves. Controller support and cloud saves should be a high priority for game developers on iOS and I have no idea why a developer wouldn’t take advantage of said features. At least they added controller support. Maybe the next update will have it?

The best mobile game

This is actually my first App Store review, because Downwell is that good. It is not just a great game, but a perfect game for its format. It’s quick, arcade-y rogeulike gameplay with its intuitive simple controls and gameplay make it perfect to play on your phone. The combo system allows its surface simplicity to actually have a lot of depth and challenge. It really is the best mobile game no doubt, 5 stars. However, I do have complaints. As a UX change, I wish you could also turn off sound-effects. You can turn off background music, but it’s pretty annoying when you’re trying to listen to music and you hear the little beeps and boops. As an actual gameplay complaint, while I really appreciate the simplicity I do wish their were more upgrades with more diversity. The very few in the game feel somewhat limited after enough gameplay. They haven’t updated this game in a year so I really hope they make a sequel with more content. This game is truly amazing and if you’re gonna have 1 game on your phone it should be Downwell.

Great Game, but Control Problem Literally Gets In The Way

I already owned Downwell on another system, but I love it so much I figured I would also get it on my phone for quick bursts of action before getting back to work. The game is minimalist in the best way: the 3 color graphics (with your choice of unlockable palettes) instantly convey what you can land on and what is better avoided, and the single button (besides left and right movement) that combines jumping and shooting gives you a surprising amount of agility that allows you to strategize your ammo as you assess on-the-fly whether to plunge ahead to preserve a combo or to take your time and plan your next jump. This leads to this version’s major fault that cost it a star: you can turn off the visibility of the onscreen buttons, but unless you have an external controller, your own thumbs are still going to be blocking your vision of what threats you’re about to pounce onto or dodge! If only there was an option to switch the button zones to the top of the screen with the threats you’ve already passed.
Still great game, though!

Good game, poor Control

This game is very good, and I’m a fan of the console version. Unfortunately, on mobile is is MORE than hard to control, and I find myself losing lives when I shouldn’t have. The game plays fine, but I’m dying way to much do to poor controls, and occasionally I will jump on an enemy and still take damage. Another upset is getting hit from the side. And enemy swooping in immediately tapping me from the side. Completely out of my control!

Brilliant and long lasting.

I really love this game. I like how every single thing in this game does at least two different things, like how your gunboots not only attack things, they also slow you down. It makes for a game that is super simple, but takes forever to get old. Really just a smartly designed game overall.

Gameplay slows down on iPhone 11 Pro Max

I’ve played for years on smaller devices but one would think the faster processor in the 11 Pro Max would be no trouble for this game, but it slows to half speed just moments into playing. Classic go to for a challenge

Just finished winning the game...which I’ve managed to do maybe a half dozen times at most over the course of 5 years or so. It never gets old. Definitely for gamers of a certain generation who like challenging, high sensitivity games. It’s a great combo of rogue like, bullet hell, platformer, and what used to be called “twitchy”. A modern day classic for sure.

Great Game

Staying on my phone forever, really like it. If I could change anything, I would add more simple core colors. What I mean by this is simple, in the game, you can unlock color palettes to make the colors different. The first 3 are Downwell, Matcha, and Aqua (red, green, and blue respectively), these palettes don’t change anything but the primary color. I would add more palettes, so we can have yellow, purple, orange, and pink types of these, or even a custom palette maker. I know you get Nikaido later on, but it isn’t true to the core 3 because it changes the background. Other than that it’s a great game, add a “tip the dev” in-app purchase so I can give you more money, if the dev(s) are listening.

I wanted to like it

I wanted to like it. I really did. But the controls are terrible and force you to put your fingers where you need to see. You can set the buttons to be invisible but your fingers still need to sit on top of them. This is a game where you fall down. However your character is on the middle of the screen and your fingers are on the bottom. You have a tiny portion of the real estate on the screen to play the game, meaning most of the screen is wasted showing you what's above you. Which doesn't matter nearly as much as what's below. What's worse is that the tap left or right controls are much less accurate than sliding your finger left or right, which would be a much better method of control. Worst of all is that the game is advertised as having elegant controls. The irony is just too much. On top of this, the description says things you gather on your trips stack. They absolutely do not. You reset everything every time. The only element of progression is unlocking new colors and character traits. Disappointing because the same early levels over and over get boring quickly.

My favorite game on iPhone

This game is DOPE!!! Seriously, I have to really hate a game or app to leave a review. I don’t leave reviews if I like a game, I never keep them long. I’ve had an iPhone since the iPhone 2 was released, and as weird as it feels to say this, Downwell is my favorite game I have ever played on an iPhone. I loved games in the 80s, particularly Metroid which this game was obviously inspired by, so the style of this game is exactly what I’ve missed and wanted out of a pocket sized pick up and put down game. The music is perfect, the color theme is perfect, the characters and style is perfect, it’s simple, kinda loud in a fun way, medium to fast paced, funny, just the right amount of customization options, no overglossing..the game never feels like it breaks character, just all around hasn’t received the credit it deserves at all. If I were to add anything at all to it, it would be more side scrolling and just a longer game (even though for now the farthest I’ve gotten is level 3). This game will be staying on my phone permanently, it’s underpriced, the creators are underpaid, and I’m hopelessly looking forward to merch in the future.
Also, no, I was not paid to leave this review. I hate writing reviews, I just finally found a truly good game.

Excellent Game

I have a hard time spending money on a game that isn’t optimized for my phone, because I want the best experience that I can get out of it. That was basically my only reason to hold back on this title, but when I figured out that an update optimized it for the XS Max, I immediately wanted to try it out. So far, it hasn’t disappointed, and will probably stay on my phone as a game to play on the train or when I have absolutely nothing else to do.

One-of-a-kind gem!

I have never had anything bad to say about this game. It keeps me coming back with the unlocks and characters, and gets my blood pumping with gems as I fly through the increasingly difficult levels. You really care about how much health you have and upgrades will truly help you stay alive in this action packed adventure. Starting above the well on the surface really tops things off.
The one thing I would like to see change is iPhone X full screen support. It would let the player see much more of the screen with less finger in the way. To be honest if you never changed it I would still play everyday. It would be nice though!
Fantastic game 5/5
*UPDATED REVIEW BELOW*
Wow, this game hasn’t left my phone since I downloaded it. And that’s saying a lot because I get bored of games really quickly. You would think there’s not much to do, but that’s the beauty of it; you are perfecting the art of falling in a way that hasn’t been done before!
Reaction time, patience, and a few minutes are the ingredients for a good time in Downwell. But there’s nothing stopping you from playing it like a slow paced Mario level!
With the characters, upgrades, shop items, and pallete options, this game can be played in countless ways! Amazing!!!!!!
Oh and the only thing I would have added has been added just recently! iPhone X support!

Amazing Experience

This is definitely one of my favorite games ever. The tight controls, great visual style, and interesting concept make this game a treat to play. The team behind this game definitely knows how to take an interesting concept, and do so much right with it. The gunboots, for example, are something you would never think would exist in anything, but they’re applied so well that you just forget about it. The controls work great on mobile, and I rarely go in a direction I don’t intend. All the explosions feel impactful, and it’s just great to sink a little bit into each play session whenever I want to play. It’s tough, but once you beat it, you’ll feel accomplished. You’ll never have the same experience every game, and it mixes up the game all the time. I’d recommend this game to everyone, and it’s definitely worth the $3 it is.

This game is AMAZING but..

This is one of the best games that I’ve picked up in a while, there’s only one problem with it that I would REALLY appreciate to be fixed. I’m on an iPhone XS Max so I’m not sure if the problem occurs on all platforms, but what happens is that I’ll be having a really good run, then I get a text so I get to a safe spot then answer it, but when I come back the game is frozen and the only solution is to restart that app which deletes all my progress. If the developers manage to read this and update/fix the problem than this game is a hard 5 and would also change my rating. (As a side note it would also be a REALLY good change if the game would allow the user to change the size of the buttons, as I find it really off putting having to reach all the way to the other side of the screen just to turn right).

Sort out bugs.

I got a new phone and waited to get Downwell as the bugs had rly annoyed me out of the game before. I got it one day I was bored and yep, they had not been fixed...
- If you switch to another app (say someone calls you) and want to come back to your game, the game will almost always crash and you lose all your progress. So you have to restart from the first level which is frustrating.
- When you have headphones on and open the game, sometimes the game will overtake your music app and pause it. No thank you.

5 stars if not for annoying button lock!

I would absolutely give Downwell 5 stars if it it worked perfectly. I can’t stop playing it, even though I can’t get past 2-2.
I’m having a real annoying issue, and I don’t know if it’s due to the type of phone or what, because I’ve seen others having the same experience as me. There are often times when I can’t jump and move at the same time. One button works while the other does not until I tap them separately. Makes the game a lot harder than it already is. Hope there’s an explanation or it’s fixed at some point! It’s gotten worse lately, which is weird, and it’s rendering the game almost unplayable.

Major Change Needed

The game is great. Nice colors, fun, a little challenging, all you need. Except one thing: it crashes a lot. I don’t know about anyone else’s phone, but I’ll be playing and a text or whatever will pop up. I’ll click on the text take like 6-10 seconds to reply and when I go back, it freezes and makes me restart. It is especially annoying because some texts are important and need to be replied to, but it’ll restart me when I’ve gotten really far into the game. I don’t know if you guys are still updating this game, but if you are, can you fix this?

Long time gamer first time all the way down

I downloaded Downwell two years ago when it came out and beat it for the FIRST time yesterday (the final boss is insane). Just to give you an idea of how insanely fun this game is, perfect combo of old school gaming and modern phone games. Amazing way to kill half an hour when you’re stuck somewhere. The controls are difficult but imho that’s a plus, reminds me of double dragon II where it feels like it takes actual thumb skills. Make more games please!!!

Reasonably good for the price

I'm not certain this game is deserving of the praise it's received. It's good value for the price, but I grew tired of it quickly.
I enjoy the concept, the art style is nice, and the audio and music enhance the experience.
If you want to enjoy about 8 hours of roguish gameplay for a reasonable price, pick this game up.
Great? Good.
Now here's what I don't like:
• The game doesn't save its sate in the background. If you have to switch apps and Downwell is pushed out of memory by the OS, you lose your progress. This is inexcusable for a mobile game.
• When I play a roguelite, I expect to have a drive to unlock things that could potentially help me finish the game (see Wayward Souls, Binding of Isaac, Rogue Legacy). I want that, "Oh, that's new. Wonder what it does?" experience. None of that in Downwell. There's a dozen upgrades and around 8 gun modules. You end up unlocking "styles" that barely make a difference on gameplay. Big whoop.
• Because you have little control over your trajectory, a single mistake is *very* punishing.
• The controls really should be at the top.
• The controls sometimes don't work. I've absolutely had instances where I put my finger on the Go Left button, and the little dude doesn't go left. I look at my finger resting on the screen, look at my dude not going left, and just stop playing.

Bought this on iOS and steam

This game is freaking addicting! Unlocking and playing all the different color pallets reminds me of playing 90's GB and GBC games. Favorite is the black and red scheme though. It just seems easier to see gems and such. Really fun game! I flat out hate a couple weapon types, but the first gun actually holds up well as long as you increase its capacity, so it's more of A personal observation than A complaint. I think it's easier to play on iOS, but I did play it for two months on iOS before getting the PC version. It just has A more fluid feel to it control-wise.

Incredible

This is one of the best games I've ever played on my phone. The novel approach of a platformer in a constant descent brings up some great aspects to gameplay, like physics based combos where you leap from enemy to enemy, in a ballet of destruction. This game is easy to play but challenging to beat. And after you beat it the first time you unlock hard mode, which unsurprisingly, is very hard. There is an incredible attention to detail in the pixelated animations and physics. I played this over and over for many months and still find it entertaining and challenging.

Really amazing game!!!

I'm just going to say I haven't fully played this game, I got it a few days ago and (Maybe it just me) but this game is hard!!! But that and a whole lot of other things makes me really like it, like the fact there is no story, or that there are different gun upgrades that help you change the type of gun you have or when you get an extra 4 health you get 1 more health point, And it's really addicting. Totally recommend it!!!

Hotline Miami meets terminal velocity

When I get many games, they start out endearingly basic and some bloom into monstrously entertaining games. When I got Downwell I thought this was going to be a quickly boring jaunt into thumb-busting 8-bit territory. While not a strategy-rewarding life-devourer like Imbroglio, this is a fun time-waster with a novel way of making a fall down a hole appealing to roguelife players - players of those games where repeated deaths lead to better starting options. If you are looking for a soul-altering game, $2.99 is a bit of a question mark, but otherwise a fantastic job. Not recommended for slow types, but DW did help me dust my game thumbs off and get away from turn-based play for a bit.
Just one addendum: while this is procedurally generated, it is an action game above all. Look up Bump & Jump.

A Gem.

Simply put, this ode to classic gaming has it all. The introduction leaves an enticing feeling as you decide to leave the comfort of your bed for an adventure down a challenging and exciting well hole. As far as iPhone controls go, this game has a smooth feel with a three button layout. The animations of the sprites are cute and well thought out giving way to the simple color palette. Overall a complete experience for handheld gaming and worth your cash. I look to developers to take something from this game in terms of style and simplicity.

SO CLOSE

I absolutely love this game, don't get me wrong. There are just a few features that hold it back from perfection. First off, there's no save feature, so when you leave the app for like five minutes you have to restart your whole run. That coupled with the fact that runs take about 30 minutes makes the lack of a save crippling. Additionally, the game sometimes crashes when you run music streams in the background. Please fix this, lovely developers. Your game is too good not to.

Nearly Perfect

My only issue with this great game is that the controls are somewhat difficult and twitchy. Not only are they at the bottom of the screen (where you are heading), but the arrow keys are too close to each other. I constantly find myself moving the opposite direction intended when I'm caught in the game. The fire button is also too small for a quick use, and its placement makes it hard to reach at times. If the game could be played on a sideways orientation, it would deserve a 5-star rating.

10/10

Downwell is a simple game with a simple control scheme and a simple goal: Find out what's at the bottom of the well. After that however, the game starts throwing everything at you. It's a game that gives you everything you need to win but the amount of effort you put into it is the difference between success and failure. I've had the game for about two months and just reached the last floor of the game...Before dieing of course lol. It's retro, challenging and fun to play

Spectacular except for one bug....

This game is amazing. Looks great, plays smooth, and all-around fun & addicting gameplay that will make you say "Just one more...." This game is perfection except for one pesky bug. Sometimes, when a person calls me, Facetimes me or exit the app and go back to it, the sound turns off. I check settings and it says it's on. So, I keep switching in on and off, but sadly you need to close the game and open it back. I don't know what the problem is, I'm playing on a 1-month old, brand new iPhone 6S, so I don't know what's happening. Please solve this imperfection for an otherwise stellar game! You guys are amazing :)

Fantastic

This is a fantastic game, and well worth the price. The controls are tight, the game always feels fresh, and the style is great. Random level generation means that every game is a different experience, so you can play it over and over without repetition. The progression is nice, though some more palates would be nice for a future update. It's definitely unforgiving, and a single mistap in hard mode can destroy a run. But all in all, it's a must-buy for whatever platform you have.

Best Arcade Style IOS Application EVER.

I would like to start of by saying, NO there is no story to this, this is an endless arcade shooter/platforming game so, YES of course you will love it if you like arcade games. The thing is, unlike most arcade games, there are millions of ways to play this game. No joke. The description and pictures don't serve it justice. I see a lot of people complaining about button placement, but you can simply go into options and set "Buttons" to "No". And besides, when an enemy nears the buttons, the button goes semi-transparent in that region in order to make way for the enemy. The only issue I had with this game was my own issue, the way you hold it. But ignore that! This game is great and it deserves 5 stars. I have written one review in my time and that was to get credits, but honest to god, this game is perfect and customizable down to the color of the screen. YES, tap that buy button, YES!

The best mobile game ever.

This is by far the best game on this site. This game has the quality of a game on consoles or pc, but on your phone. The gameplay is fun to play and replay, and the graphics and music is great to look at and listen to. The only thing I would say is bad is that the game doesn't give too much to make you want to come back except for the fun gameplay. But this game still needs to be more known because it's the best mobile game ever made.

Smooth Platformer With A Great Twist

Downwell is one of the most fun and addicting games I've played in a while. Most iOS games are fun at first but I lose interest after a few days. This is definitely not the case for this game. It has a very interesting way of shooting that makes it stand out from most games. It's a little frustrating when you lose your upgrades after you die but it's fun progressing through each of the levels, seeing new enemy types, and collecting new weapons.

5 Stars

Now, for those who don't want to read this review, I'll sum it up real quick. It's good, and you won't get bored of it. It's worth it.
For those who need REASON as to why the game is so good, then here we go. Some people have rated this game poorly due to its retro graphics and simple gameplay. This game is superb, and an amazing experience. It is very polished and very fun, and that gives it HUGE replay value. The game is very big, and I don't see it ever growing old. It has simple controls, but requires a certain skill that must be developed. With the leveling system and the color pallets, this game is a fresh breath of life into indie retro a evade games. 1 purchase and boom. Infinite fun. Why are you still reading? Download it already!

One thing to make it excellent

As others have said, the buttons at the bottom are elevated to the point where it makes it difficult to see what comes ahead. If the powerup/status icons were moved from the bottom of the screen to the top (say just under the health bar), then the action buttons could be moved lower and let the player see more of the enemies and terrain that lie ahead. (Putting it more on par with the PC version.) Please make this change!
EDIT: After playing the game a while longer, I've noted that you can turn off the visible buttons by tapping the top bar and going to options. Anywhere in the lower half of the screen can be tapped instead, making it easier to see.

Best iOS game I've ever played

I've played some good mobile games before - but nothing like Downwell. All of the other games have really felt like a mobile game. Downwell simply doesn't. It feels like something I could have played on my Gameboy when I was six years old. The graphics and sounds are so authentic that, when coupled with the original gameplay, you've got a serious winner on your hands. I can't stop playing. So worth the money.

This is a REAL video game!

If you are looking for a mobile game that actually feels like a "real" video game, then you've found it. It's got beautiful 8-bit graphics, excellent sound, responsive controls, and it's difficult enough to keep you going for a good while. I have enjoyed the heck out of this game.
I do have two complaints- First, I often wind up with a frozen game when I leave it for whatever reason, whether it be to read a text, or maybe just having to put the phone down for a while. Exiting and returning to this app often causes it to freeze upon return (iOS 9.2.1 on a 5s). Second, it does not play well with other audio, i.e. music, podcasts, whatever. Having a podcast running makes it almost certain that my run is done if I should happen to leave it for some reason.
Now, in spite of the fact that it is *incredibly* frustrating to lose my progress 2/3 of the way through a winning run, I'm *still* giving 5 stars, because this game is just that much fun. I've been playin' video games for over 20 years now, and this is one of the greats. The learning curve is steep, but the depth is there, and the end is worth it. This isn't some dandy rush/mash of blands garbage; this is the real deal.
Good luck with hard mode! (^_^)

Pricy, but worth it

Although it's a bit on the expensive side, such a small game for $2.99, this is one of my all one favorite iOS games. It's very smooth, action packed, and it keeps you interested. It has very simple three button controls, cool/retro visuals, and it's very easy to play. All you have to do is kill enemies and fall- there's not really any aiming- it's just a great game. I've always been stingy with prices, but if you aren't me, it's worth the money.

Favorite iPhone Game in Years.

I do not put that title lightly. I have been playing games on my phone for over seven years. Most iPhone games age badly or have terrible micro transactions these days. This game is timeless, super fun, and has great music. The animation is fluid and funny at times. The power up system makes every game feel different. It's so satisfying to get further down the well every game. I've been playing for months but I've never beat the games four locations, because it's such a perfectly challenging game. There are four characters that play differently, so even more replay value. And then there is one of my favorite features, the color pallets. The gems can unlock new color schemes the longer you play. It's like throwing a fresh coat of paint on the game every time. I simply love this game. You should play it if you like real games.

Very Smooth, Fun Marriage of Roguelite, Platformer, and Arcade ShMUp Aspects

This is one of the best games available on iOS in my opinion, and certainly the only one that I've really sunk hours into. The gameplay is challenging, but fun and satisfying, and you can take things at your own pace and land often, or descend at breakneck speed racking up massive combos. The concept (both for the item of gunboots, and "falling based Platformer") is original and pulled off fantastically. The sound effects are kind of "crunchy" if that makes any sense, every sound effect feels natural but dynamic. The graphics are simple but have a very nice sort of minimal look with most of the many palettes and effectively get across the information you need about the things you're plummeting towards. Some animations, particularly the "jump moving into falling" animation for the main character, are beautifully smooth. The music is really great and atmospheric and I could listen to it over and over, which is good, since, this being a Roguelite, (roguelikelike?) you'll probably visit most levels, particularly early ones, more than once. If you're thinking about buying this game, just take the plunge (har) and go for it, especially if it's on sale!

Amazing pixel style arcade falling shooter

Downwell is a ridiculously addicting vertical shooter where you slowly fall to the bottom of a well while trying to collect gems, find gun boot upgrades or purchase health or charge upgrades from the shops along the way down. The game sports a classic retro look with its 8-bit pixel graphics and also let's the player unlock skins that will have you thinking you're playing it on your first ever game boy. After completing normal mode you're given an even more challenging mode which I have yet to beat to do this day. Even though the game is for the most part repetitive, the upgrades you'll receive after completing each level will make it seem like a different run through each time. It also rewards skilled playing by giving you health, gems and charge points after racking up large combos. The combo system makes the game feel very rewarding and gives the player a reason to keep playing to rack up even bigger combos. I have been unable to delete this game from my phone and will continue to play this for the foreseeable future. Amazing game Devolver keep up the amazing work.

An Amazing Game

Let me start of by saying that I love this game. Like, deeply. The pick up and play value is phenomenal, as it never requires too much of your attention.
Holy crap, though. It's hard. It'll have you asking yourself "Why am I even playing this?!" before long (as you start again without thinking any further).
I only withhold the fifth star because it would be the best game on iOS by FAR with only one more feature... The ability to choose a chapter after you've cleared the previous ones. Given that the games highest value to me is as a short, something to do between responsibilities ten minutes at a time game- it's painful to know I'll be back at 1-1 when I inevitably bite the bullet.

Excellent vertical roguelike

There aren't many iOS games that fill the niche of being quick to pick up and play and having the nostalgic style of an NES platformer. This game delivers on all counts. The weapons all behave differently, the power-ups are fun, and the palette swapping is a nice bonus. I cant think of a negative to say about this game other than the music; don't get me wrong, its great. I just feel that the tracks are a bit short and tend to loop quickly. There seems to be only one track per area, so you begin to hear the beginning of each song a bit too frequently. Other than that, excellent roguelike. Well worth the price!

Well Done!

I'm very impressed by this game in so many ways! At first glance, it doesn't look like an enticing game in any way, and it seems like it should be played on a gaming system of some sort instead of a handheld device. But I absolutely assure you, it's marvelous! Downwell has me addicted simply because it is a one-of-a-kind app that runs smoothly and plays beautifully. The soundtrack fits the game perfectly. My favorite part of Downwell is the pure joy my fingers get from tapping on the simple controls. I don't normally spend money on apps, but this is an exception I'm glad I made. Thank you so much Moppin!!!

Great game, just fix a couple things

Please add an option to move controls towards the top of the screen. Falling down into things which you can't see because of your fingers getting in the way gets frustrating.
Also could we have a chapter select option once we beat that chapter? I can make it to the catacombs but it'd be nice if I could start at catacombs level 1 after I die instead of starting back at the beginning of the game.

One Fun Killing Bug

I love this game and I play it all the time but there is one bug that has almost single handily ruined this game for me. Sometimes I'll be in the middle of a really good run (Several times have been about to complete limbo) and I'll lock my phone by accident or leave the game to look at a text message both AFTER PAUSING (this could be the reason it happens) and when I try to either get back into the game or unlock my phone I find that either I A) cannot unlock my phone
B) can't load the game.
When I do finally get back in all of my progress for that run is reset and I don't get any credit for it. I hope this gets fixed soon it's really getting annoying.

Best Game on iOS

I've had an iPod/iPhone for more than 5 years and never have I had this much fun with a game. Never have I played a more responsive and fluid game on any touch screen device. Technically, the game is nearly flawless. Downwell is an easy to learn but difficult master kind of game. It took me about a week before I ever saw the end boss and I still haven't beat him. The constant unlockables, like different play styles and palette choices leave you wanting to play more just to see what comes next. It's always surprising you, even until the very end.

The one game to rule them all.

It makes me want to come back every time. I just want to get further into the well and see what is down there. I don't know if it's the simplicity of the game, the nostalgic factor it gives me when I play it, or the fact that it can go from being a quick dopamine-fix game to a hour long session.

Fantastic

Absolutely fantastic game. A great throwback to old NES games like Metroid and Super Mario. Sessions are quick and simple, never lasting more than 10 -15 minutes. It's easy to pick up anytime.
The only thing that bugs me is sometimes when I'm playing, the left-right control buttons just stop responding and I'll die really quick. Only happens once every few runs, but really bums me out. The other thing is that it took me forever to figure out the pause button. Tap your health bar and it brings up the menu, for anyone who was just as stumped as I was. Would be slightly easier if there was some indication, but neither of these really soil the game for.
Fantastic game! Couldn't recommend more!

I love the style, it really does feel like an older video game. The sound effects (such as of the gun boots and destruction of blocks) and the tremble of the screen when the boots are activated are two little details I enjoy. It makes the game feel more alive and intense. I also love the option to change colors and the perks/upgrades. Overall this is a very fun game and totally worth the buy. Good for passing time.

Downwell is Down Right Awesome!

So I am usually a fan of games like these, I saw the price and the good praise from many places and people, and I bought it. I had seen it on steam before but I just hadn't gotten around to buying it yet. Now that I have, I can't stop playing it!
I have yet to find any bugs (is the moon supposed to be flickering? It might just be my iPod 5th gen acting up...) and the game play is simply awesome. I love the controls, and to hose who are complaining about having to tap each button, I think you can just slide your finger, but you get less control as you descend into the depths.
The unlock able pallets are what makes me keep coming back, and trying to hit the highest combo. I love the concept, too. I live everything about this game!

Keep It Simple Stupid

Awesome time killer. You fall. You shoot things. You get gems. Tons of unlockable palettes and game modes incentivize continued play and keep things interesting even after you've cleared the game. Clearing the game will take a while however. It took me a dozen tries just to get to 2-1 and I promptly died to the first enemy there. The game is difficult but having to restart isn't rage inducing since everything is a little different for each playthrough. Downwell is definitely worth the $2.99 for hours of "jump in and go" entertainment.

A Beautiful Game with Amazing Animation, But...

I'm going to start off by saying this is probably the best looking game on iOS, in my opinion. The animation is just flawless.
With that said, playing the game on the iPhone is hindered, not by virtual controls, but by the size of the phone. It actually cramps my hand when I attempt to hold my phone the way they intend. I would MUCH prefer holding the phone horizontally, even at the sacrifice of screen usage. At least give players that option! The way it currently is, I just can't play the game.

Fantastic!

This game is simply fantastic! It's simple, very, very fun, and addictive. No microtransactions either! The game rewards you with different styles and palettes. Not only that, the game is reminiscent of classic side scrolling arcade games, but you're going down instead of side to side. You jump into a well filled with different kinds of beasts, armed with only your gunboots. It takes a bit of time to get used to the fast paced action, but once you get the hang of it, it becomes a sort of adrenaline rush. You collect gems, find gunboot weapons, shotgun, burst shot, etc, and after every level are rewarded with a new ability that is permanent, until you lose all of your lives that is. I can't praise this game enough, not only is it good for passing time, it genuinely makes you feel great whenever you get further and further down the well. Buy it! It is great!

Simply Amazing

This game, in it's most basic form, is a bullet-hell vertical platformer. Those who give poor ratings either have bad phones, or didn't play it enough. This game IS difficult, and WILL take a lot of time to get used to. The color pallet is simple, but infinite, and as you progress you can unlock different pallets, as well as characters to fit your play style. This game is extremely fast paced but can easily be taken slowly for more precise runs. Lack of content in my opinion is no issue, as I've been playing for almost a week and haven't gotten passed level 5/???. This game is beautifully simple and perfect for those looking for a real challenge in mobile gaming. Good luck, and give em hell.
