While certainly not as heavy as their previous releases, Coma Ecliptic manages to pull off the more progressive side of BTBAM, and pays homage to Floyd, Crimson, and even Depesche Mode (Dim Ignition), which you hear throughout. Aside from the prog, I swear I even heard a little 311 even on Option Oblivion a little over 3 minutes in. The only downside to Coma Ecliptic is that it feels very much like a concept album compared to The Great Misdirect and Parallax, but many could argue that EVERY BTBAM album has somewhat of a concept album vibe to it because there is a different tone set for each album. Also, those that are expecting a return to form Alaska heaviness will be disappointed, as the delivery is less so on the hardcore side this time around. The band has always painted a picture and scene, much like an author does with the first couple chapters of a book, which makes it so enjoyable. They’re still and always will be my favorite band of the post 2000’s. So close your eyes and prepare for a prog-rock adventure :)
