This album is awful. What happened to the two blue collar boys from Akron that wrote "Thickfreakness" and made a Junior Kimbrough tribute album? I really thought these boys were saving rock and roll. Time to throw them to the hipsters.

The black keys keep getting further and further away from the roots,, very disappointed with this release, I try to except it for what it is but still do not like it at all.. please bring back the distorted greediness with great guitar riffs...Rubber Factory is still very best hands-down....so disappointed in this..

For every negative review I read....come on really? Call if you see the black keys?....I don't like the direction there going?... I have to say for me it's like reviewing the Beatles based solely on their old albums."Oh God, I hate Sgt. Pepper and the White Album it sounds nothing like Meet the Beatles...." This could possibly be one of the best albums I heard all of 2010 era. They perfectly placed their old blues with a seventies type feel for a strange album that sounds nothing like today's rock standards. I welcome the change and say bring on the next White Album.

Changed! And for What?

The origanal B. Key's seemed to be totally gone now. I saw them live in Fort Wayne, In 2002-3. WoW! I had to buy everything they had and put out because what a powerful duo with very heads up different sound. Now, they sound like all other fluffy stuff!

The fact that you had enough nerve to criticize Josh Homme on the guitar shows you lack an ear for music. Dude, you couldn't play a guitar if your life depended on it. That little submission you did against Gaga was the lamest two minutes of "music" I've ever heard... Might as well have cut off a cats nipples and recorded it... Lady Gaga has more talent in her left pinky toenail than you've got in your entire body, and you are the only man I've ever known to have penis envy.

Stellar!

Love the 70's classic rock vibe, guitar work and melodies. It's different than what you would expect from the Black Keys, but sometimes different is better and this new direction is no exception.

Studio wizard Danger Mouse? Hardly. I understand bands evolve and you’re not always going to like all the new stuff but memo to the band: don’t forget what got you there in the first place. Not a hater but it's time to find a new studio wizard. Get back to your roots boys.

.....this album is IT! incredible soulful blues, outstanding vocals, just one word to describe this whole collection....incredible! Even through in a little "70"s style organ. Should have won the Grammy for best album, although Beck was top notch too! Glad they have come out of the Garage! Not sure how they can top perfection, guess we'll wait and see!

It's better than El Camino but not as good as Brothers which is my favorite TBK album. I highly recommend Weight of Love, Year in Review, In Our Prime and Gotta Get Away. Weight of Love is one of the greatest TBK songs and if the rest of the album was like this, Turn Blue would easily be their best album. I'm not saying I hate Turn Blue but Weight of Love is godly compared to the other songs. My least favorite songs were Bullet in the Brain and It's Up to You Now; they feel lackluster and don't have the same energy as Fever (yes I actually like Fever) and Gotta Get Away in my opinion.

This is the last time i pre-order a Black Keys album. It used to be just automatic that I'd preorder, but Turn Blue has taught me that they are no longer a sure thing. Too bad i can't sell these songs back.
This is the beginning of the end for the Black Keys. They are clearly no longer "in (their) prime" like their song title. There's been a steady de-evolution since Brothers. This album is basically just the weakest parts of El Camino and amplified. And the very worst track on Brothers is still slightly better than the best track on Turn Blue. This band peaked with albums like Magic Potion and Thickfreakness.
If you want to see classic Black Keys nowadays you need to check out Black Pistol Fire and Royal Blood. Though they wouldn't have existed without the groundwork that the Keys laid, they have not sold out or gotten pretentious....yet. Enjoy them now before they make enough money and get too high of an opinion of themselves. I don't see that happening with Pistol, but I definitely see Royal Blood selling out like the Keys.
They've gone soft and full of themselves. It's like the Black Keys on Valium. They sound like they're trying to win a Grammy. Where's that hungry and grimy garage blues band? They are moving away from what I like to hear at an alarming rate. It's overdressed and awful with palpably less soul and integrity. You're a two man band for Pete's sake, why is there so much extra noise?? You were FAR better when all you could hear was vocals, drums and one of the best guitars ever.
Obviously Danger Mouse gets a big share of the blame for killing this band on this album. He obscured all that makes them great with layers and layers of the two most evil words in music today: "Sonic Landscapes." There's every kind of needless and fake noise you can throw at a band. The only noise you don't hear, in fact, is the sound of the band and the producer being crushed by their huge egos. If I wanted to hear Broken Bells, I'd listen to Broken Bells.
Thanks to Danger Mouse and the direction Auerbach is heading, this album is more R&B and electronic that happens to also have guitars and drums than rock. They used to be just two crazy talented musicians, but now they need tech support to perform in addition to roadies. There's practically no swampy feel whatsoever which really makes me sad. They were the ones that got me in to swampy blues and now they've abandoned it. A fact that certainly made me "turn blue" in my soul.
You can blame age for some of this change and you can blame Danger Mouse for another portion, but really it's all about them just trying to make even more money at this point. Not music. You could argue that Brothers and El Camino were just band growth and change, but isn't it ironic that this dramatic change followed their biggest commerical success??? They are clearly pandering to the largest groups of album buyers out there. And they don't tend to be the deepest and most intelligent people. Music for the masses is always the most profitible. They got a taste of big $ and they chose that over the music.
Though Dan can still play the heck out of a guitar, this is by far my least favorite Keys album if you haven't already guessed. This album has dramatically weaker stats than every other album in their catalog. The average song on this album is 3 stars while every other Keys album has 4-5 star average songs. What's even worse, this is the FIRST time i've had throwaways on a Black Keys album. I'm still in shock almost 2 years later over this fact. :(
There's just five 3 star songs and the rest are throwaways. All of the tracks that I kept are coincidentally also the five most popular tracks. You can tell that the people know what they want from this band. But Dan and Patrick are chosing to follow Danger Mouse (stupid name) all the way to the bank.

It saddens me to listen to this

Just stay away from this album. They should have stayed in the garage and played their filthy garage blues and not become a synth pop band. I think I understand what they were trying to do here, experiment with new sounds but they forgot to include their garage blues in the mix. They were on a path and decided "hey lets blaze a new musical trail." Now they are so far down this path I don't know if they can make it back to where they were before. They are so close to being irrelevant and I think that's the saddest part of all

They're old stuff was amazing, and I can't believe people are complaining about this album, it's amazing as well! Just cause the Black Keys are trying something new, doesn't mean it's bad. If you can't accept change, then don't listen to this album, otherwise, keep doing you!

I understand this album is different from the Black Keys older sound, and I know not everyone likes the change, but there's no need to be a jerk about it. Even if you don't like the change in musical direction, I think this comment section can agree that this music is still way better than most Top 40 songs... so give some credit to TBK for keeping musical integrity. Just because you don't like something doesn't mean you should force your opinion on others.

I was just listening to attack and release and thought, "Hmmmm. I could use some new Black Keys." Then I sampled this recording and El Camino and got depressed. Who took their balls away?? I could blame Dangermouse but these guys are grown assed artists in charge of their own destiny. And apperently they choose to make muzak for the Apple Generation. It's catchy. Just weakweakweak. Can't you f%&#ers be multi-dimensionaly creative and still keep things hairy? I think you can. You just aren't. I wont buy this. I'll be checking out something earlier and giving Attack And Release another spin instead.

Disclaimer: If you want to listen to Thickfreakness or even El Camino Black Keys, turn back. They are trying out new sounds and it's amazing. What I love about them is their ability to put so much soul into many different music types. You can either hate them for the change or love them, like a true fan would. Some people aren't able to handle change, but this album is great.

I miss the pure, raw, unadulterated Black Keys sound. What ever happened to the days when it was just Dan and Patrick jamming out on the guitar and drums with insane bluesy riffs and soulful lyrics not worried about filling stadiums and making sure their albums went platinum. I understand that they are trying to make money, but they are a shell of their former selves and it is so incredibly sad. Really hoping now that they are rich and famous, they decide to take it back to “Rubber Factory,” “Thickfreakness,” and “Magic Potion.” They might as well be called “The Band Formerly Known as The Black Keys."

The Keys' funky phase is a bit confusing because it's not bad, and yet it's not that great either. 'Weight of Love' is their best song on the album, but I'm not about to ridicule them for that considering the lack of talent floating around the pop scene anyway. This is an obvious post from anyone a fan of The Black Keys, I realize. All I can hope is for this duo to never get this lazy again.

I'll pass on this one. I'm all for progression and artistic freedom but the heart and soul that pours from Magic Potion is not apparent in this album. For now I will get my rock and roll fix from Hanni El Khatib. Hopefully their collaborations don't end up in the same place as this album.

This album isn’t the best of The Black Keys, and in my opinion they’ve been declining since Attack & Release. However, “Weight of Love” is my favorite song they’ve ever made. It’s the most soulful, passionate, and hard-rocking song they’ve ever made. The outdo starting at 4:40 is incredible, it reduced me to tears!!!

Change is good, but as long as you change for the better - for the betterment of one’ self, or band in this case. These guys really took a leap with this album, and in my eyes there is no way they are truly happy with it. After “Attack & Release” I unfortunately stopped truly loving their music. Since “Brothers” all their music has really taken a turn for the worse. In this case, worse for the true true fans and better for all you Pop lovers. In the pop lovers eyes, they are doing fantastic, and I could agree with them, but seriously… from “Brothers” to “Turn Blue” it has been them trying to write songs for the general public and not themselves. They seriously lost touch with what they really had… what they CREATED. They aren’t making anything new here at all, and it is disappointing. I mean… very cheap lyrics and over produced to the max. I still love them, but man have I lost respect. Also, Turn Blue’s album cover… HELLO????? RIP OFF of the Black Angels. Just google Black Angels and you WILL KNOW what I am talking about. So cheap.

I'm giving this four stars out of a fear that this may grow on me and a regret that I may underrate it. I'm hearing what reminds me of Beck in places and sadly U2 on one track. It's still the Keys though and they still sound like the Keys. I fell in love with their sound early and it was refreshing to hear music that was just that, music. I can't compare this to any of the early albums and honestly, there is enough in their catalog from that period to more than satisfy. Anything more of that would be redundant. This album is what it is and it shouldn't be taken personally that this is what came of the creative process that made it so. I will say that I liked it a whole lot more on headphones after a beer and some bourbon.
Update...Purchased this album and have listened to it a few times through and have to up my rating to five stars. Dan's solos are very soulful and Patrick shows his versatility in his touch. This is an amazing album and is definitely not a low point in a proven catalog of amazing music. Good job boys.

There is no denying the talent that these boys ooze and there is always a moment in any artists' career that you take a step from the norm but in my opinion they completely lost the mark on most of this album. It feels more like skinny jeans and PBRs and less of the soul, power and grit that is so hard to find in today's music industry. I'm sure this will appeal to new fans but hopefully they will throw us 'die-hards' a bone on the next one.

The reviews from folks saying, "This new direction isn't good and I don't like it," are from people who just aren't listening to this album. They might be hearing it, but they aren't truly listening to it. I look at it like this; They eat spaghetti but do not like any variation or differentiation of any other Italian food because it isn't spaghetti. One track minds will always hear music, but never listen to it. The combination of emotion, power, effort, and good sounds make this album one of the Keys' best. People seem to forget that even the best blues solo artists went on into bands that played heavy metal, rock, pop, jazz, you name it. The genre is not a determining factor in whether or not a group can make good music. And this is undeniably, irrevocably good music. I look forward to their next production.

Yes, they don’t “sound the same” - wouldn’t that be dull? What they do sound like, is “The Black Keys” - artists who have not only crafted but now mastered their quintessential, unique sound (and will, I hope, continue to master/evolve/experiment/revel). Evolution is good. I don’t want to buy their first album again - I have it already. This a masterful - my appreciation for new layers of texture and nuance grows with each listen. An unquestionable 5 stars. Enjoy!

I'm a diehard Keys fan. Discovered them at Thickfreakness and have been hooked since. I'll admit, I was skeptical of Fever. I was expecting a big boasting riff like Lonely Boy or Your Touch, but instead was met with an organ. I believe in Dan and Patrick's musical integrity enough to trust them to make such a change. I think that's the problem with a lot of rock bands that have long standing reputations like TBK or Arctic Monkeys. As soon as you do something pretty drastic to your sound that comes off as poppy or has more appeal to the mainstream, you're considered a sell out. This album has some great tunes on it. Don't let the old albums hold you back from appreciating something truly groovy. If you like their old stuff only and consider yourself a "diehard" fan, I don't think that's appropriate because a "diehard" fan should welcome and appreciate change.

Is this the end?

Not sure who this is but this is not the Black Keys I have a feeling this album is more Danger Mouse than the Black Keys. I mean where is the guitar I don’t listen to Dan and Patrick to hear keyboards and melancholy beats I’m just so depressed on this album I got the vinyl in the mail today and got more and more bummed with each song. I know you need to grow as an artist and are not going to put out the same record every time but this is so far from where they started from and what they had done in the past. I hate this album.

Just finished streaming the album on iTunes radio. Little bit of old Black Keys, some Pink Floyd, Neil Young, and even some Portugal. The Man. This is a fantastic album; moody, soulful, lyrically melancholy and an awesome follow-up to Brothers and El Camino.
As for the haters, you people are the worst. You're the same wretched crowd that bemoaned Dylan when he went electric in the 60's. You have no business critiquing music. Artists are allowed to grow and evolve as they see fit, not how you deem suitable.

If your hoping for more garage rock revival from these guys, you're quite out of luck right now. But please, if you can try to forget this is the band that gave you everything from The Big Come Up through Magic Potion, and just focus on the quality of music here, you may be surprised at how awesome this is! Seriously, this album might just be their greatest commercial accomplishment. Far more engaging than Brothers, less monotonous than Attack and Release, and more creative than El Camino, Turn Blue is an album that grants vast rewards to those who give it multiple listens-through. The record plays as an exercise in retro songwriting through various classic rock styles. The seven minute title track is reminiscent of Pink Floyd's "Time." The album continues through psychedelic disco, early 80's synth balladry, and crisp snippets of commercialized progressive rock leanings before landing on a real gem of a final track in "Gotta Get Away," sounding like some never before released boggie rocker by some obscure mix of C.C.R., Lynyrd Skynyrd, and maybe Foreigner (and no synth on this one for you real rockers out there :) ). Of course everything here is taken in a modern context through more advanced recording tech, and more flexible instrumentation. All in all this masterpiece should prove to be a real contender for everyone's album of the year lists, and will remain a classic for years to come, despite its already classic leanings. If you like what you've read here, take no excuse not to find the time to get access to this album ASAP. You will not regret it.

This is an amazing album. The sound is clean and pure. The guitar is radical and the drums are just ecstatic. The Black Keys really went for a new sound, but came out amazing. Nice music is good.

So sick of the same old arguments...

I was lucky enough to come across “The Moan” LP… some little known thing back in.. I believe 2004 and fell in love with the this hard, blues driven, gritty, raw rock band. I had to have more and “The Rubber Factory” came out a bit later. While this is what drove so many pre-grammy, pre-Brothers Black Keys fans to become entranced by they're music - it’s now weirdly holding you back from enjoying some amazing music! Yes, TBK’s are mainstream now - this does not automatically translate to bad music. I’ve heard the same tired argument since starting with Danger Mouse on Attack… Which was a great album, but yes they changed, and at Brothers if that wasn’t apparent you should have understood they still made Great (and yes different) music. At El Camino it was more than apparent that you’re not getting the gritty, hard blues band you came to love, yet again El Camino was an amazing album, and if you din’t like it… well be mad and move on… listen to Magic Potion and remember the good memories it provided. Now here we are at “Turn Blue” I’ve heard all the songs and I can say that once again, The Keys have made an amazing album, they’ve changed completely again, but did it in a way that moves you and some of these songs are the best they’ve done to date. That said, the folks wanting their gritty-blues-hard slaved guitar and raw sound…well those days are long… long gone - have been for some time, so move on or listen to what they’re doing now. The amazing thing about what these two have done these last 4 albums, is they’re all completely different from the last, yet all really amazing. The only thing I miss is that I can’t see them for $18.00 in a small venue anymore, but I’m happy they’re still putting out such touching songs… Listen to “In Our Prime” on this album.

The whole album is great all-around. I feel like it has a light psychadelic Pink Floyd flair to it, but the music is still in touch with it's blues-rock foundations. A must-have for fans old and new.

Terrific

The Black Keys have changed, it's true. But change doesn't mean worse music, it means different music. This album may have a different sound from its predecessors but it is still a gem. Every single song is good (I've heard it thanks to "First Play") and I can't say that about all of their other albums, even though I'm an absolute die-hard Black Keys fan. The Black Keys are still very much The Black Keys, and this album is a great album. That's all you've got to know. Buy this album and go see them on tour, you won't regret it!

This is honestly one of the best albums of the year. The feel is like most of the Black Keys albums. There is no "disco" or anything other than pure blues rock. This music is pure sexiness, and it's great. You can't judge an album on just hearing two songs. Some of you even dare to judge it based on "Fever"! Come on, and give it a chance. Danger Mouse has produced everything since Brothers, and I think all El Camino and Brothers are great, as is Turn Blue.

Definitely wait until you hear the whole album before rendering judgment

Like many others who have commented before, I feared the worst when I heard the first single "Fever" from the Black Keys' new album, Turn Blue. The synth and pop-like noise that emanated from the song was nothing like any other Black Keys song I had heard, and I thought that the old Black Keys were totally gone. Even their transition to El Camino wasn't as drastic as the one seen in Fever. With Turn Blue, my hopes were increased slightly, but I still wasn't extremely enthusiastic - the song, while not nearly as poppy as Fever, was still a rather monotone song that had little direction.
With the advance preview of Turn Blue however, all of my doubts have dissipated. "Weight of Love" is arguably one of the strongest Black Keys' songs put out in recent memory, and Turn Blue is full of wonderful songs that greatly exceed the first two singles put out. The Keys have struck a fair balance between their bluesy roots and the more poppy noise that they found in El Camino, ultimately creating an album that has greatly exceeded my expectations. It almost makes me feel like they deliberately put out two songs that they knew were weaker as to build up the tension when the full album was released. Needless to say, I am more than satisfied with the end result of Turn Blue - I have only listened to it once, but am sure that it will only continue to grow on me as I listen to it more.

Auto pilot music...

These guys have not made anything particularly compelling in a long while. Not that there aren't worse things you could listen to, but, it just feels like they are crapping out #1 hits for the idiot masses now. I guess I can't blame them, maybe they have kids college tuition to pay for. You won't see me forking over any dough for this thought. this is pretty much pretentious hipster garbage.

Being from Akron, I've followed the Black Keys since their days of playing at the Lime Spider. Although I do support bands changing and progressing over their career, I do not really care for this song (or this sound, for that matter). I think what fans have loved about the Keys is the bluesy guitar/drum raw sound, and this song definitely does not have that. Maybe it will grow on me and the rest of the album will be good. It seems like since they moved away from Akron (New York and Nashville), they've lost their "core" sound.... Maybe it's time to move back, fellas!??

Too much of a new direction

I am all for progression in a band’s music, but they have changed their sound so much that they don’t even appeal to me anymore. At one point they were my favorite band, but now I probably won’t even buy the album if it is all like Fever. Their new sound may work for some, but I miss the power The Black Keys once produced with only a guitar and drums.

Why would I buy this if it is not the same Group I saw play in front of Pearl Jam at MSG? The BK's made me snap my head up and take notice and wonder who these guys are? I listened to the whole set then but I don't think I would buy this with this one song. I may not sound like a true fan but I am and this is not the True Keys I enjoy!

I truly hope this is not a sign of things to come...

The band that was The REAL Black Keys. LAST SEEN: On albums like Magic Potion and Rubber Factory maybe Attack & Release with dangerous blues hooks & gut busting drums like "Just Got to Be"... "Give Your Heart Away"... "I Got Mine" and "When The Lights Go Out." I used to stay up hours into the middle of the night jamming out to those tracks. REWARD: An over fluffed producer that goes by the name of Danger Mouse...can help your garage band reach their "overproduced" potential and get you on MTV! PLEASE CALL IF YOU SEE ANY SIGN OF THE REAL BLACK KEYS. CAN REACH ME AT 555-REAL-KEYS. THANKS!

I'm not sure what's going on in this song...I understand bands branching out and developing over the years but this is a total departure. Where's the blues?!?? This sounds like every other indie band out there! That's not a good thing. Scared for the rest of the album.

The Black Keys always find a different shade of themselves for each new album and this doesn't change that trend. The first four albums were largely blues-based. Attack & Release was diverse, Brothers was soul, El Camino was rock and roll, and Turn Blue sounds like psychedelic. But this is only the first single, so they could surprise us even more with the next single...

I love Dan and Pat, and this track is fantastic. Reading some of the reviews make me laugh. "70s disco?" Are you sure? This track is full of great bass and synth sounds. The solo at the end is beautiful. I can't wait for the album. Now remember everyone, artists can choose to go in other directions! They don't cater to your wants!

I want to like it; I do. And one song does not make an album. But if this is a flavor of what's to come, I'm not buying it.
II found TBK a little late in the game--after the release of Brothers. I quickly went back through their catalogue, loving most of what I heard, and wondering why I hadn't heard of this great duo. Based on their solid history, I bought El Camino without even sampling it--only to be disappointed. The songs lacked the blues, grit and soul of their previous efforts, and I soon tired of the album.
Fever sounds like a leftover from El Camino. I really hope they throw those of us who fell in love with their gritty blues sound a bone on this release, Maybe a divorce from Danger Mouse is in order.
I'm going to cue up Stack Shot Billy.

This band is a shell of its former self. First few albums were pure greatness, Brothers was pretty good and el camino was garbage, and with this new single it's easy to see what this ones gonna be...leave the synthesizers at home boys...back to your roots please...disappointing.

I know it's not the old blues sound of Rubber Factory that us hardcore Black Keys fans had grown to love, but I like this single. It is fairly similar to El Camino and I loved that album. Even if you didn't like some of the songs on that one there was still Little Black Submarines and Gold on the Ceiling which are great. Maybe this will even turn on some new incoming fans! For all the people who say they have changed, they're just exploring new sounds. Hopefully this album turns out to be amazing!
