Exquisite playing and a provocative approach to jazz fusion
This is a double issue of the 1971 album Gary Burton & Keith Jarett with Throb, a 1969 album recorded by the Burton Quartet with Richard Greene (violin). Both feature Burton and Steve Swallow, with Drummer Bill Goodwin. Sam Brown is on guitar for the Jarrett album; Jerry Hahn for Throb. Jarrett doubles on keyboards and soprano sax for Como en Vietnam and The Raven Speaks. The first five tracks are from Gary Burton & Keith Jarett. Henniger Flats and Turn of the Century start off the original Throb LP, and do not feature Jarrett.
Both are notable for showcasing Burton's leadership in jazz fusion, in his case pairing jazz with blues, rock and country rather than the soul, funk or R&B fusion that may be more commonly identified with the genre. Gary Burton & Keith Jarett is an excellent example of Burton's exquisite duet work with keyboard players, with special attention due to the extended duet passage in Grown Your Own. Throb's collaboration with violinist Richard Greene makes an interesting parallel to Burton's other notable violin collaborateur, Stephane Grapelli, with whom the Burton quartet recorded in 1972 on an album called Paris Encounter.
