Personal project. Want to make music my own way. All the great have an album like this. Not mainstream and some argue counter to what make them “famous” to start. But what is in here is a throwback to his roots through his own lens and experience. This album and the different song versions highlight that an individual is made up of all types of things…and they got there on their own path.

Huge letdown from my Favorite artist

I don’t remember being more disappointed in an album in my life. It’s amazing that a song can be played three different ways and still lack depth. Lyrics lack the passion, heart and hurt that Tyler once put into his albums. As a guitar player in church, I’m all for a gospel album and a sober one as well, but this greatly misses the mark.
I planned to follow Tyler’s next tour but I’m having seconds thoughts since he’ll be paying mostly this album.
Drop the band, pick up your guitar and write some good music again. Please

I heard a small clip on the KSR show and had to check out this album. This music just instantly reached way down in my soul and pulled out emotions I had forgotten and thought were dead. It was like taking a dry rotted sponge and tossing it into an ocean when this music flowed from my speakers into every cell in my body. My heart skipped a beat. It literally brought tears to my eyes. There is just something so real and genuine in Tyler’s voice that for now I just can’t get enough of.

My favorite “Old Country Church “, was written with Flat Lick Baptist Church in mind, the oldest Baptist church in Pulaski County, Ky, organized in 1799.

This album takes repeat, deep listening.

Little things stand out like the setar at the end of angel band, that has a lot of meaning. Don't judge this right off the bat. Tyler shares the spotlight with his band and they also add so many intelligent layers.

Here's a thought...

"They" told Ray Charles NOT to do a country album. When you're good, you CAN do anything. Tell Billy Strings NOT to do anything but bluegrass. Country, certainly gospel , are near the bottom of my list , but Tyler Childers sound is music to my ears. This is not a review just reaction to a limited sampling , and i like him stretching out a bit. A great singer , songwriter ,musician , may YOUR god bless him and may he be one with everything. Isn't the title corny enough ,and country enough for you purists and churchy types?

This album’s description and smear of half his audience is misguided. To paint a large swath of the population with such a wide brush is virtue signaling at its worst. In re: to the album, I respect his desire to evolve musically, but this didn’t hit the mark. Too big of a leap and it abandoned his audience.

Every album we stray further from the light. Tyler builds a huge fan base… proceeds to completely change the sound and style most loved him for.

Why do they have to always go next level “Art”?

I get that Tyler wanted to do what he wanted to do but I just don’t get it. It’s average music from a Superior Musical Mind and Talent. Sturgill did the same thing, never to be heard from again. So now my #1 (Sturgill) and #2 Tyler or gone and on the verge of gone…thank God for Jason Isbell to probably move up from that#3 spot. I’ll be listening to red barn, purgatory, Country Squire and all the live stuff of Tyler’s on Nugs for the rest of my life but this album won’t make it to ‘2024. What a let down…

I feel like most religions have way to many hypocrites, preaching to us sinners about how to live a better life. A life that secures our tickets to the biggest most powerful show that we have an opportunity to gain admittance to.
It seems to me that Tyler redirects through his magical voice those misconceptions and what I feel to be the code to gain admittance to the show of our lifetime. He’s came along way in life, fought the devil on his shoulder with years of addiction and being unsure of his life’s path. He has since overcome one of the hardest journeys life can take you on, and from my point of view released this album to celebrate his journey down his new path of sobriety.
Tyler conducts this celebration by harmonizing his heritage and upbringing in gospel with his own added touch. This album represents so much to so many regardless of anyones faith and beliefs and that no matter the path anyone of us are on, we have the opportunity to take the most righteous route when we’re ready.
With the song Jubilee (either version), we are shown that regardless of your faith, each and everyone of us have an opportunity to rejoice in heaven together for eternity regardless of the route we took to get there and our beliefs in religion.
I’m a believer in the all mighty and every now and again will stumble off the most direct path to the biggest show, but once I realize how rocky of a path I’m on, I take a look at my moral compass and am able to find that direct path again. This album gives me the hope as it should to us all, that we will be admitted to the biggest show in our lifetime, regardless of the pathways we took to get there, beliefs that were instilled in us at birth. We should all know that we will always have our own moral compass that will point us in the right direction to get us back on path when we’re ready for that direct route.
Great job Tyler, you are a true inspiration to me and so many. You’ve given me hope and have helped me through so many rocky pathways over the last 4 years I’ve been following you. I to was raised in Christianity, and haven’t always lived my life through the preaching’s and interpretations of the good word I was taught to live by growing up in the south. I’ve always felt that’s ok, as long as we always resort back to our own moral compass and keep striving to find a better more direct route to our final show.
Your in inspiration to me for even brighter days yet to come and give me the motivation for my journey through life. Thank you!

Loved a lot about this album. Definitely harkens back to old school Gospel music and the experience of growing up in church. His cover of “Old Country Church” and “Way of the Triune God” are my favs.
Disagreed theologically on “Angel Band”, but I hope he sees that despite the imperfection of people (esp. Christians), Christ loves him and wants all to be with him (John 3:16-17).
Overall, a very good album, especially the Hallelujah versions.

Most country artists understand how great Gospel songs sound and record a gospel album. It would be nice if he was a practicing christian, which would make it seem more genuine. Also, the universalist attitude where he envisions “muslims, Hindus, etc” in Heaven is not a Christian idea and should not be included in a gospel theme album. The album sounds good, wish there were more than 8 songs

I like it, I don't love it. I should have waited for the release to make my purchase. Several tunes I really like...O.d Country Church, Can I Take my Hounds to Heaven and Angel Band. His voice sounds amazing. Just not a fan of every song like on his previous albums. Still love me some TC!

The more I listen the more confused I get. Absolutely ruined Take my Hounds to Heaven. The new Purgatory is decent but nowhere near the original. Old country church is well done. The rest of the confusing cluster of songs is just that, confusing. Sturgills influence on him has ruined his music. I’m guessing to many DMT trips.

First off been a fan for awhile, was excited for the album to come out, it’s just instrumental music, with some background vocals. Not what you expect from this artist. If it’s Christian/Gospel music then I must have missed it.

You get 8 songs 3 different ways. 2 of the 8 are instrumentals, 1 is from the Purgatory album. 1 can be found on YouTube preformed many times over the years. You really get 4 new Tyler Childers songs on this album, but the 4 are pretty good.

If the album just contained Hallelujah and Jubilee I would give it another star. Joyful Noise is just what it is noise. Not interested. Angel Band song is an interesting tune. It has every denomination mentioned. Some Christians might be offended by this. I am not. This is an up lifting song. If you beleive or not.

Sturgil went rock, tyler went funk???? Or gospell???
Not quite sure if this is myfault for not following updates on this album…. But i just purchased and if i could, i would return it…
Just seems so odd that someone would make an album with only 8 songs and then three different versions of each.
Needless to say not a fan of this one. which its likely because i have the musical appreciation of a gnat……. But i just wanted some good ole boy music. Instead i feel like i was served a luke warm piece if 8 day old chocolate jalapeño cake………
IMOP: stick with what your good at, and def dont bring techno, gosspel, funk into the mix

All the songs are amazing , and the chance to hear them in three different incarnations is a blessing . For those calling it out as not true gospel , or insincere because he includes all faiths is exactly the narrow minded view He’s trying to ditch . Amazing album, but, then all Tyler’s are .

I love Tyler’s sound and how his folk/bluegrass music from his first two albums but this isn’t really it. A lot of just the band playing and not a lot of actual lyrics. The band sounds good but it’s not the same from his other albums.

2 instrumental songs, a rerelease, and a Hank Williams cover on an 8 song album. For someone who is so into making good “country” music, there isn’t much country about this album at all. I’m all here for the gospel, I think Angel Band and Way of the Triune God are dope, but there’s no fiddle, steel, mandolin, etc. And to describe Joyful Noise: Abomination. That isn’t country. I’m not even sure if it’s music. It’s like if a 14 year old wanted to do an edm tribute to sturgill. I think Joyful Noise would have made sense for bluegrass cuts. But hey that’s art and he can express himself how he wants. But basically 2 concept albums in the last 3 years. Hopefully there’s a quick turn around on a regular album that have the sound that got him his fans in the first place.

No where in this track listing does he mention anything about "Christian." He very well may be, but it's not your place to judge where his faith is coming from. This is the type of attitude that actually turns a lot of people away from Christianity. It's a bastardization of the gospel.

I’m not big on him anymore but this is cool anyway
