Some bands might have a bad album or good but so far this album was beautiful. It was different and I enjoyed every minute. Don’t always have to be a fan but cut some slack

As the previous album , HEADFUL OF DREAMS gave us a possible finale to this bands current state as a band .. I was surprised to see they were releasing another album.. Not only is this a great album.. it’s an IMPORTANT album as far as COLDPLAY is concerned.. their follow up to a very poppy Headful of dreams was a trip back to THE Worldly experimentation of DEATH AND ALL HIS FRIENDS .. “my fav. CP RECORD PERIOD .. it’s also littered with elements they haven’t included in other albums they’ve done .. DADDY was prob the most intense song that effected me personally being that I’m going through an awful custody battle .. it’s From the point of view of a child who doesn’t see their papa much .. absolutely beautiful and haunting song

The originality woven through every song, be it experimentally or in a throwback to some tried and true methods, is simply beautiful. This is what the world needs more of. To all those “nay-sayer” reviewers, it’s clear you didn’t listen to this album from start to finish… shame on you. Bravo Coldplay, you’ve done it again. Thank you for all you do!

I love the album!

I've listened to Coldplay since the beginning. To say I loved their music is an understatement. Their albums have seen me through twenty years of cancer, losing my dad, and other traumas. When I couldn't sleep at night, it was Coldplay who kept me company. I've listened to this new album a couple times, hoping it would grow on me, but I'm not even 'meh' about it, I hate it. I LOVE when musicians include African, Indian, etc inspired elements, but this music just isn't good.
The whole police nonsense in Trouble in Town.....well, I know, today people hate police, but my husband gave 25 years of his life to serving the public. He was a commander when he retired and he required excellency and professionalism from all the officers under him. The job stress was insane and he was nearly killed on duty (don't want to get into that) and he has many scars to prove it. In his 25 years, not one officer of his shot a person or killed anyone, throughout the huge agency. We did lose many officers in the line of duty; I can't even keep track of all the funerals we've been to laying fellow officers to rest. (Yes, there are bad cops and far too many bad corrupt PDs, but it seems like that's the majority because that's all the news reports). So for Coldplay to be 'woke' in the 'police are pigs' trend, it's hugely disappointing. Animal Farm is one of the best books ever written, so I always applaud literature references in music.
Aside from that, the entire album seems like some bizarre experimental collection of music that doesn't come near to the excellency which we know Coldplay is capable. At least I still have Bon Iver and The National to keep me company next week when yet another two brain tumours will be removed.
TL/DR: hate the album. Bring back Coldplay.

I always find it disappointing when an artist or band who has gone their entire music career without any swear words or cursing in their music and then turns the wrong corner. That was something I always appreciated about them. I’m not impressed.

I truly disagree with everyone out there who is giving this record a one star because of the new sound and explicit album. If you listened to this album in its entirety and went back to it, you’d know that “Orphans” and “Champion Of The World” are really the only pop song on this album. So I’d stop labeling this as a pop album. The thing that make artists that have been around as long as Coldplay, are the people who enjoy change and don’t. Artists are supposed to change their style, not everyone is going to like it. Now this album isn’t perfect, but I don’t believe it’s deserving of the ridicule it’s received since release.

The best album in a long time!!

It’s unsurprising that this album has mixed reviews. Coldplay has transitioned from moody acoustics, to thumping arena rock, to radio-friendly pop and dance. It’s no wonder then that fans of Coldplay are as diverse as their discography. While this did afford them the title of “biggest band in the world” it was not without consequences. Since the release of X&Y, each subsequent Coldplay album has further alienated more and more of their fan base. Has the quality of their music declined, as so many fans have cried? I believe not, rather their constant pursuit of new genres and sound has driven fans away as they stopped producing whatever kind of Coldplay a particular fan likes best. In the context of this career arc, Everyday Life is a nail in Coldplay’s coffin, a deeply experimental and unique sound that doesn’t care whatever Coldplay you want them to be.
It’s a hard shift away from the previous effort, A Head Full of Dreams. That album was Coldplay at their most optimistic, and most vapid. Here they take a pointed stance. Almost every track is politically loaded, sometimes cringe-inducing in their lyrics. “Guns” is the most egregious of these, parodying the right with lyrics such as “cut the forests their so dumb.” Not exactly a subtle take, but after years of vague, meandering lyrics it is refreshing to hear Chris tell us all what he really thinks about the world. Despite the band being very socially active, rarely has their worldview been allowed to seep into their music. Now they unload all of it into a single album without restraint. Police brutality, gun control, civil war, racism, all are topics we are now privy to the bands opinions on. This likely played a large part in the albums lukewarm reception, although none of Martin’s left wing takes should be a surprise if you at all followed the band outside of their music. But despite the pointed spear their lyrics are sharpened into, the most shocking change of all in this release is the sheer breadth of styles the band attempts to cover. A wide range of musical influences has been par for the course since Viva, but this album features the most diverse track list to date. The jazzy riffs of Arabesque and the near evangelical sound of Broken are extreme departures for the band, and the entire album is filled with an Arabic theme that gives even their more traditional songs a distinct feel.
Those traditional hits are good too, Orphans upbeat feel and resonating chorus harkens back to MX and Viva’s arena rock classics, while the appropriately yet unfortunately titled Daddy is a piano ballad so hauntingly beautiful that it puts many of the Rush of Blood to the Head era tracks to shame. Coldplay may be experimenting with who they are now, but they haven’t forgotten where they came from.
However great the album is, it continues to disappoint fans. If you were a fan of their clean, vague, radio friendly sound, you will be put off by their profanity laced political takes. If you loved the upbeat big rock and pop smashes, the moody, gentle take of most of the tracks won’t give you much to be excited about. And if you long for the acoustic guitars and Chris’ gentle crooning of the early days, that Coldplay is never coming back. This album does not appease any particular fans of the band. But if you like Coldplay not for a particular sound, not for an era or a genre you wish they would return to, then Everyday Life is a beautiful album that is absolutely worth purchasing.

This album is intense, empathetic, somber and soulful. Arabesque is funky, Sunrise is too beautiful for words, and Trouble in Town echoes the horrible reality of navigating life in a world riddled with injustice and hate. “Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere”. Every Coldplay album is a work of art. Johnny, Will, Guy & Chris, thanks for another awesome album! Much respect from Wisconsin.

This album continues the trend with Coldplay from their 3rd album on...it's overproduced. It's like once they hit it big, they got exposed to all these musical "toys" and options and can't seem to resist using it all. Most everything has a kind of "wall of sound" that Chris's voice barely emerges from. There is a bland caucophony in the background of most songs that just drones on and on. I get that bands grow and try new things, but they've gone too far with that. Strip it back a little, guys!

I wish I could give 0 stars.

This album is HORRIBLE.
1. All the songs sound like songs of other artists. It doesn’t sound like Coldplay.
2. The cursing is super unnecessary and ruins the songs even more.
3. I was super bored listening to this album for someone who was excited to learn there was a new Coldplay album.

I was personally getting tired of the poppiness of the last few albums. I didn't think they were bad, I just didn't love them nearly as much as their older albums. This, however, is the complete upheaval that my soul was yearning for. The strong messages, the mix of genres, and the truly beautiful songwriting made this album one that I listened to over and over again. Nothing wrong with some occasional dance pop, but nothing beats gospel choirs, orchestral openings, and the stark contrast between the raucousness of songs like Guns and Arabesque and the gentility of others like Old Friends and Everyday Life. People are in here complaining about missing "the old sound" but I definitely hear it here! Especially in comparison to Viva La Vida and Prospekt's March.

This is an album that you need to listen to several times before you will fully appreciate it (much like ghost stories). It is definitely not pop. It is very different than past albums and demonstrates Coldplay’s ability to evolve. Chris Martin said that if they do another album it will be different and it is. This is what self actualization sounds like.
After some time away from this I re-listened along with the videos. As a result I increased my rating. Brilliant album especially in this post covid age.

I’ve always looked forward a new album to come out by Coldplay. I love their style, love their music, but I was very disappointed by their newest album. I’ve loved Coldplay my entire life. I grew up with it and it’s so catchy and fun! I was so excited when I saw you guys came out with a new album. But this new album has EXPLICIT?! Explicit language is just boring and lazy. You guys were unique and special by NOT using language and still sounding amazing. Instead of having a clean version, you should of just started with the clean version to begin with. I’m very disappointed and will not be listening to these songs. They don’t sound like the Coldplay styles I know and love. I hope you correct your mistake in the next album. ☹️☹️

Like some other reviewers I've seen on here, I'm honestly quite surprised by the amount of hate this album has received. They've taken music to a whole new level by experimenting with the world, and I for one find that risk worthwhile. Not to mention it reminds me of their older albums, such as Viva La Vida and even going as far back as Parachutes. While it is certainly different from their poppier albums (and I'll admit, I am not a fan of pop), it still holds true to the pop culture. All in all, I'm glad I gave this one a try on Spotify. It was well worth the download.

Let me preface this review by saying that Coldplay is my favorite band. I enjoy songs on ever one of their albums and many off of their albums too. By no means do I blindly approve of everything they come out with because I do not. When I say this is a 5 star album, I really do mean it. It may not entirely be what I’ve come to expect or remember from the band, but I found these to be a net good. Additionally, I assume these differences will live only on this album and perhaps be referenced on later ones. We see two transitional tracks as well as one intro track, similar to Mylo Xyloto. The intro, “Sunrise”, was a beautiful violin piece that gave feelings of waking up, doing your daily routine, shaking off melancholy, and being filled with hope. The other two seemed more of a pallet cleanser. “Church” is a heartfelt song about having someone special in your life. It utilizes many stretched out vocals and a short guitar solo that makes me feel happy every time I hear it. Songs like “Trouble in Town” and “Daddy” add to the experience of the album, bringing our minds to darker places but still leaving in a glimmer of hope that the world can get better. The angry guitar solo in “Trouble in Town” is an amazing thing to hear in juxtaposition to actual police body cam audio of police brutality. Hearing “Broken” after gives me a sense of recovery. Same with “When I Need a Friend.” “Arabesque” on the other hand is a begging for peace and adds new emotion to the album. Its use of improvisational-feeling sax adds to this in a way that is not seen on any other Coldplay album. Unique tracks like “Guns” give more texture to the album overall and show us the range Coldplay, and more specifically Chris can accomplish. I really enjoyed having a more subtle, yet powerful message in “Orphans” immediately after was a neat juxtaposition. Many people complained about this track, though I think it is one of the strongest despite its more pop feel. We finish with “Everyday Life”, a ballad about how we should come together and see the pain in each other as well as what makes everyone special. Ending with the repetition of hallelujah was beautiful and a great way to set the metaphorical sun. With a thought-provoking theme and meaningful features, this album is definitely worth a buy and full listen through from time to time.

This album is so refreshing. Breaking free from the constraints of formulaic and the forgettable pop song (not that I find any of Coldplay’s songs forgettable or formulaic), Coldplay finds an originality and intimate feel in this offering that is exhilarating. I was reminded of the inspirational feeling I get when creating. I love this music.

I was dissapointed that Coldplay broke up after A Head Full of Dreams. When I read that they reunited for one more album I was excited. Everydaylife does have explict lyrics but, they don't dwell too much on our political state and the other stuff going on. Coldplay does curse if you listen to one of their live albums. So many great tracks and the vocals take me to heaven.

In response to the negative reviews of this album: I’ve always been a fan of Coldplay and will continue to be. Their creativity evolves. I don’t like every song but I don’t have to. I choose which ones I like. Some have a beat, tone and lyrics that speak to me and some don’t. Every band changes over time. Just listen to the Beatles! They went from “I Want To Hold Your Hand” to “Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds”. Just because they started out one way doesn’t mean they stay that way. This band writes and performs because they love doing it. Their job is NOT to pacify you or to make sure you always love their sound. Get Real People! And go listen to more Coldplay. By the way, if you aren’t moved by the song “Daddy” on this album then you might just be made of Stone.

I see many people here complain about how they feel that Coldplay has changed and they wish that they went back to the “good old days.” All I have to say is that one can’t expect things to be the same all the time. People change, tastes change, times change, and there is no going back. Personally, I love this album. It’s a nice mix of classic and modern music and I enjoy every aspect of it. I like how Coldplay decided to explore something new. I am especially happy that they made another album after 4 years. I missed them and I welcome their music with open arms.

After browsing most of the reviews, I realize they all come from Coldplay fans who only enjoy their earlier albums. That’s great! If you prefer those albums, just stick to listening to them and ignore the newer music. However, if you can’t accept that people change (just as their musical style changes), don’t try to ruin it for the rest of us. This album is a refreshing masterpiece that blends Parachutes, Viva, Ghost Stories, and AHFOD vibes seamlessly, along with completely knew musical styles (gospel, choral, mid-eastern rock, etc.). Personal favorite tracks include: Trouble In Town, Arabesque, When I Need A Friend, Orphans, Eko, and Champion of the Word.

Simultaneously both pensive and profound, understated and explosive, this album ruminates over all the bad in the world, yet also gives thanks for the good. I’m not at all surprised at the amount of reviews lamenting the “loss of the old sound”, yet Coldplay has always been an evolutionary band, going in new directions with each successive album. There has always been an element of pop thrown into the mix, yet here it’s much less present, much to the dismay of those who want nothing more than a crowd pleasing hodgepodge of rhythm and melody and something that they can sing along to. That’s not what’s happening here. Here, rather, we see them staying within themselves but going out enough to sound like nothing they’ve ever done before, both lyrically and musically, which is and should be challenging to the average listener. The music reflects and in turn causes the listener to reflect, inviting them to turn their focus to the injustices in the world without sounding contrived but rather sounding genuinely compassionate. Tracks such as “Arabesque”, “Trouble in Town” and “Guns” tackle at racism, systemic bias, and gun violence respectively. These issues are not supposed to be comfortable, nor should they be. Altogether, this album is indeed one of the best they’ve ever done, and the closest they’ve come to expressing Chris Martin’s true belief in the beauty and ugliness of everyday life.

Timely and Artistic!

When I was young I couldn’t wait for an album to drop to savor it for all that the artist was trying to share. Our current musical world limits us to just a few favorites but Coldplay has brought back the love of listening to an album in its entirety.
The album is also filled with music that forces us to think deeper with its lyrics, diverse styles, and sound imagery helping this woman remember the humanity of our entire globe. I bought this album three days ago and am on my third time through the whole album and grateful for the artistry here!
Do yourself a favor - don’t limit the artist here, savor the whole thing!!!

Coldplay is Back...quietly

I stopped listening to Coldplay after their first three albums with “Parachutes” being the favourite. After that period Coldplay fell into radio friendly teenage pop category in my opinion, and their songs became favourite or Radio’ Top 40 fans. I almost lost all hope after their performance at American Super Bowl half time, but what a surprise with “Everyday life” Coldplay is back and they have redeemed themselves as proper musicians with a good taste. This album musically is superb, and gives me goose bumps listening to some of its songs. I can pass Coldplay’s socio-political lyrics which I do not care for or even agree with, but the mood, music and atmosphere of this album goes very well together even with these lyrics. Additional guest vocalists add great elements to various songs as well. I love this album, and it is best when you listen to it from the beginning to the end as whole musical experience. Best Coldplay album since....well very long time. Thank you Coldplay, you’re back to best form again.

Incredible.

This album has such a variety of songs, I feel it's impossible not to like something on the record. Soaring instrumentals, emotional ballads, some gospel and doo-wop, acoustic tracks that are soothing and sad and an acoustic track that's caustic, raw, and honest. Coldplay have described this as a very personal album, and others have called it experimental. The album, with all its global influences, is more than we could have ever expected, and I'm happy to see the band reach a place where they're willing to try anything to get their message out and not care about what others think about it.
And of course, it sounds incredible. Why? It's frickin' Coldplay, that's why.

At first, I wasn’t a huge fan of the new album. But now...the LYRICS PEOPLE! Coldplay have found a way to perfectly reflect the world in these songs. Yes, the style of the songs may be different from what we’re used to but the fact that they can bring in so many sounds of different parts of the world shows how exceptional this album is. Revolutionary. Sets an example for how art can showcase the world. Other musicians - take note.

So far, so good

(Full transparency, this review is based on my listening to the previews of each song). No idea why everyone is bashing this album. Definitely isn't what's "trendy" or mainstream, which is what makes it good. From what I've heard so far, this album has the same genuine feel and depth that Coldplay's music has always had (well, maybe not always, looking at you A Head Full of Dreams). Not so sure why people think bands can't (shouldn't) evolve and derive their inspiration from the world around them. Looking forward to hearing the album in full.

Remember, they said it’s experimental!

First and foremost, I LOVE this album. Second, it looks like the bulk of the bad reviews are either from before the album released (based on 2 to 3 songs) or people who are upset about cursing and/or Coldplay expressing opinions about current issues. Third, keep in mind they said it’s experimental, which literally means it’s something they’re experimenting with, it doesn’t mean they’ve changed their sound entirely. It’s a beautiful album, thank you Coldplay.

When I heard the first 3 releases I felt that I was listening to good but somewhat subdued works. Now that I can listen to the album as a whole it makes more sense. This is not the blaring celebration of life that AHFOD was. It's more retrospective, reserved expression of the everyday. The lyrics consist of a more common language of universality then of clever wordsmithing. The melodies attach themselves to you in an honest and casual way opening the door for you to easily absorb the emotional content. I strongly suggest listening to it straight through to absorb the flow of this deceptively courageous and somewhat experimental album. If your even a casual fan you'll be surprised how easily the music intergrates itself into your mind and soul.

Self indulgent to the extreme, the band copies well established past refrains and tries to pass them off as original music.

Oh look, Coldplay is using explicit words, uses a black choir, and even has a song title in the Arabic language. It would be nice if they focus less on being "Woke" and Pop and more on writing good songs like they used to. Orphans sounds like an Imagine Dragons knock off and that is not a good thing. Quit trying to be todays pop and just be yourself. An example of a band that seems to equate growth with blandness and trends. They can do a lot better.

This isn't good

I'm a long time Coldplay fan (since Parachutes), and this album is so incredibly disappointing. Pretty much every good song got released prior to the album coming out. They call it a double album, but it's actually the length of one normal album. Too many of the songs sound either incomplete or are just poorly conceived. Terrible terrible record.

Just disappointing

Listened to the entire album this morning. Just really disappointed in the direction this band is headed. Too political and just plain boring. I am a fan of Coldplay and their previous work but this album just doesn’t do anything for me.

This doesn’t even sound like a Coldplay album? This is not good music. Where’s the emotion? Where is the inspiration? Where is the life? Where is the energy? This is really sad. Coldplay has always been my favorite band and always will be, but this album is so disappointing.

From how the first 3 songs sound I see how people are a bit disappointed about how people don't like this new approach they're taking but personally I like it, it reflects what the album is Supposed to be (everyday life) the background noise of cars and people doing their daily routine is to show everyday life and this new style coldplay has taken on is so unique it should be it's own genre
I've been a fan since XY and I love this album So much rn

I am surprise at the number of poor reviews on here. I absolutely love the diversity of sound from these first 3 songs. One is a completely new sound and great direction, one is similar to the pop/dance anthems of their recent sound and the last harkens back to their early days. As for the explicit lyric. It fits the song and isn’t used to simply curse. Chris is an adult and, like it or not, adults often express themselves with bad language. If it offends you, they were kind enough to release a censored version. If that is still too much, there are kids and gospel songs on iTunes if you wish to avoid colorful language. I, for one, can’t wait for the rest of the album!

Listen.

Literally people are saying they don’t want pop???
But like, have you even listened to the songs yet??? Arabesque and Orphans doesn’t even sound like pop, y’all are just hating Coldplay just to hate them and have no other reason to hate them.
Even if their music does sound like pop, WHO CARES??? Who’s gonna listen to a band that creates the same song over and over again? Like radiohead???
Coldplay can do what they want and what they feel sounds good.

When I first came up with these 2 singles (Orphans, Abrasque), I was somewhat let down by the same familar Coldplay sound from "Orphans". Not that I don't like it, but it simply sounded just as similar to the previous Coldplay releases from this decade. However, it was "Abrasque" that made me feel more optimistic for this release. I adore the raw instrumental and (I guess?) the 1919 samples, making it a great break from their past releases since Mylo Xyloto. If more tracks from this album are like Abrasque but less like Orphans, I feel that Codplay may have a comeback to their mature former selves.

Really?

Strapping on my life vest, about to jump overboard. How long must we wait for Coldplay to be good again? As inspired as Arabesque sounds (should've been on Viva La Vida), it doesn't move me ("I could be you, you could be me?" C'mon Chris. Try.). And Orphans sounds like a Fifa World Cup anthem. Once upon a time I liked every song on Coldplay albums. Remember the experimentation of X&Y's "Low" (with that great bridge)? It's time for Coldplay to go back to Square One. Shame.

Seriously with Explicit Lyrics?

So disappointing after all these years now resorting to explicit lyrics. There’s enough horrible junk out there already and now one of the great things about Coldplay is gone. There will be many lost sales on this one. I love their music and wait for their new albums but won’t be buying this one!!

I just keep hoping the ‘good old days’ will return. But Coldplay keep producing this musical salad. Same melodies, the instruments blurred into one and Chris’s voice trying to distance itself from this mess. I hope the other songs prove me wrong. Have stopped being a fan since X&Y. Breaks my heart!!!

Coldplay used to be an awesome, incredible band. Their 1st 4 albums were absolutely incredible. And then they felt the need to go pop. Mylo has some good efforts on it but you could tell they were changing. And not for the better. They’ve turned into this bland pop machine which is so incredibly disappointing. They used to fill a huge void in music. Now they just blend into the same old crap that passes for music these days. With each album I keep hoping to hear what made them great. And then I hear singles like this and know I’ll never listen to them again. So so sad.

Though I love the Arabic style coming out and it blending so well with the band, I am disappointed that Coldplay has released their first studio album with explicit lyrics. Society already has a lot of that, it’s not original and shows a lack of creativity. It comes out of anger, and Coldplay isn’t an angry band.
I agree with the comments that the song also lacks meaning behind some of the superficial lyrics in “Orphans”, but maybe that also means that there is something to be assumed in that song.
Society craves music that moves us, not just stimulates us. Coldplay in the past has done that for us many a time with countless songs we could go on about.
I have high hopes for the rest of this album, and I think it has so much potential.
Shoutout to the die hard fans for not throwing in the towel over a band’s desire to change. Even if the music quality ends up being less than expected, people shouldn’t desecrate the band they’ve loved for years.

Miss the original sound...
