Lots of familiar guitar licks(Metallica, Ozzy and of course Van Halen), but still Weezer at its heart. I found this to be a lot of fun, contrasting the more somber OK Human. Not their greatest, but all the year old pre reviews are ridiculous.

This is the album we have been needing for 2021. It has all the Van Halen, Iron Maiden and a pinch of Nirvana with the Weezer feels all over it. Hero and end of the game were great singles and need some of that, good ones are gone and precious metal girl are straight Weezer classics. The surprise songs to me were 1 More HIT (Iron Maiden) and Blue Dream (Ozzy) influenced. These two songs I had to repeat to dive into the guitar. Such and great feel good yet deep album. Thank you Weezer!

Sounds like 1970s Boston meets 2000s pop rock sans guitar solos. Missing Ric Ocasek’s touch. Bring back the “Hash Pipe” era.

Refreshing to here them revert back to their original sound, but the songs blend together after a couple tracks and the lyrics are a bit corny.

I’m sorry. Given all the time and money they have, they could’ve recorded two albums easy in the time it took for them to delay a 30 minute album for a year after they already released the single.
Boo.

So many of the reviews were written before this album even came out so I’ll give an ACTUAL review. If you are into hard rock albums from the 70s and 80s this is your album. It’s not perfect but it has some very catchy tunes and some serious headbangers. One of my favorite weeper projects.

I feel like it’s become a trend to hate on Weezer which they’ve had a few less than stellar albums but this is definitely not one of them.
Van Weezer is definitely a great album and one of the best they’ve put out!

It’s Weezer taking on 80’s Hair Metal. Rivers uses his unique melody and style and incorporates past influences into these tracks. 1980’s music was truly a totally different era. Romance and deep emotions in music was huge and legendary. Power ballads were great too.

Awesome Stuff!

Putting this album off for another year was an absolute slap in the face to the fans who needed some inspiration during the year of COVID.
Now that Van Weezer was finally released, I’m a little underwhelmed. I can say it feels like a more complete Weezer album than I’m used to, as I like a majority of the songs. It has a harder edged than your typical Weezer, and that is a definite plus. The homage to EVH is obvious and well done. The only minus to me was the direct rip of Crazy Train for the song Blue Dream. That felt like the sampling I’m used to hearing from other artists who struggle to come up with original music. Weezer is too talented and could have come up with something more original there.
Bottom line: Good album that I had to wait way too long for.

They accomplished their goal

When the word began to leak out about Van Weezer, the word was the band wanted to hark back to the more guitar driven days of not only their sound but music in general. Within that, this album is a complete success. If you love 80s/90s style rock, this is a solid project from start to finish.

Rock on!! 🤘🏻

This is actually a pretty good album. Most of the retro parts are at the beginning of the songs so you don't really hear them in the previews. It's not the Blue Album but its easy to listen to and has more character than some of Weezer's other albums. As long as it stays at $7.99 its a good deal.

I actually enjoyed every single song on this album!

Okay! I’m floored, honestly. This newest album reminds me the most of that classic Weezer we all know and love. Obviously this whole album has an overall theme, and I think they did an amazing job with it! I like that a lot of the lyrics are more current in nature (it’s what I liked about Ok Human, too) but each song still captures incredible amounts of nostalgia. Personally, I adored this album. I haven’t heard an album I liked every single song on in a while! Of course I have my favorites and least favorites, but I genuinely enjoyed it as a whole nonetheless.

I was so extremely disappointed when they didn’t release this last year.. I needed that Weezer fix!
But then, just when I thought I was almost there, they surprised us with the “OK HUMAN” album.
So this year, I got double Weezer!!!
Moving on, I really thought all these songs would mean a lack of quality somewhere but holy mother of GOODNESS... I was DEAD.. wrong.
Moving on, I’ve always loved how open they are to being different.
In this album, they’ve really repurposed a lot of past themes, their own, and some new as well.
I am absolutely infatuated after hearing this album.
They’ve really put out a lot of quality work lately with these last two albums.
This one has a lot of songs that get stuck in your head, backing vocals and melody are absolutely stunning.
Weezer did amazing work on this album and I’d really recommend it to anyone that’s willing to give it a listen. You won’t be disappointed 😎👌🔥

im just going to say this before i begin, the singles (or A side) (or first half) was way better than the rest. end the game easily takes the cake because the tap solo and the vocal harmony, and the power cord sequence in the intro just works! I do think that this song should of opened up the record becuase jeez! Its probably my favourtie song ever by weezer. Hero was good tho, but i feel like lyrically, this was prob a demo from ok human, and rivers said "hey, this would sound better if it sounded like lighting in a bottle". im okay with that but i thougt we were done with the cringe songwritting after ok human. guess i was wrong. speaking of which, she needs me is the most lyrically cringe song, aside from im your daddy from ratitude. any way, can we talk about begining of the end? the album version killed it (and not in a good way...). in the wyld stalyons edit i liked the intro better, it gave us more time to hear those crunchy lead guitars! Also, blue dream. good to know that rivers can play crazy train a half step higher. thats all im gonna say about that. and all the good ones is ratitude on steriods. the lyrics sound a little cringe again. on some positive notes, i loved one more hit, good stuff. It gives me metalica vibes, except the lead guitar has a difrent tone, but i vibe with it. shelia can do it is great, but there's not a lot of shredding there, so its kinda like the blue album, which is perfectly fine. i need some of that is cool, its very nostalgic, and while its not the best song here, its solid. the closer, my precious metall girl is a relapse of endless bumer from the white album (second fav weezer song ever) except no shredding at the end, and i was totally waiting for that, so it kind of bummed me out. but still pretty gentle finish for a pretty reckless and destructional album, it reminded me of butterfly from pinkerton, but this is better. Overall, it sounded like i was listening to a brand new ep, because they kind of ruined this album's hype by realeases 4 singles for it, and only leaving us with 6 new songs to listen to, and personally, i only enjoyed 3 out of those 6. so im leavin a 7 out of 10 for this. very good tho, its almost as good as maladroit or EWBAITE. Good job, and i can't wait to see what you do next weezer (or maybe i can, idk, its weezer were talking about here lol)

Disappointed

Here is what I know: I'm 36 and grew up with Weezer. And much like myself, Weezer goes through different phases. Van Weezer is a good phase! I appreciate the musicianship underneath these songs and as a listen and relisten, it may very well push itself to the upper edge of the catalog. Think... top 6 potential - It's fun, energetic, and well-balanced start to finish. I can hear 4 past albums blended into Van Weezer and I dig.
The thing I respect about Weezer is they seem to be having genuine fun. They've put out records we all praise, and then pivot on a dime because “why not” and are not phased by criticism or expectations.
I guess... Ride or Die- WEEZER FOR LIFE

Fantastic!

This will be like one of those movies you wait so long to see and you can’t see or in this case listen and judge it straight off. I’ll save you from a full review. Beginning of the End should be the one more hit Weezer wants yet it was released from a movie soundtrack earlier. As many of Weezers soundtrack songs are my favorites. It does have some good songs, more so than in the past so good for them. Interesting how most of the songs have used musical arrangements in tribute from other heavy bands in Van Halen time period. You listen and in it pops in your head, that’s Megadeath and so on. Someone else should list them out with each song. Not that’s a good thing but fun. It’s a pick and choose world now, at least Van Weezer gives us more than one with this album. Just Being Honest, is a good song from the pre Van Weezer release. Fitting as it is a take on music taste.

This is a fantastic album that was worth the wait. Such a banger. I was worried about it for a second considering it had to follow OK Human, but man, it did a great job doing so. I love both albums, but I am always in the mood for good Weezer rock.
And to all of those who are giving the album a bad rating because of how long we had to wait for it, that’s a dumb reason to give it a bad rating. Listen to the album as a whole and give it an honest rating. COVID sucked for everyone and Weezer didn’t have that much control for when the album released.

So far, so good, this album sounds great. I boycotted Weezer for years because I hated their stupid and meaningless, pop-culture-reference lyrics. But they sound like they're going back to better-crafted songs with more substantial lyrics. I think I can like Weezer again. We shall see!

Ok I am a huge Weezer fan and people are freaking about because of the release date. Calm down please I know it’s annoying but don’t rate it based on the release date that kind of unfair. Ok on to the real review I love both of these songs and this is going to sound like I’m some fanboy but I’m not but I’ve loved almost everything Weezer has ever done I mean people who are “true fans” calm down Weezer has changed and for some reason people hate that I love when bands evolve it really marks their name in history. I also love the crazy amount of guitar tracks on end of the game and hero is an emotional journey pumped up with some 80s esqe sound. I have a great feeling about this album and the future of Weezer in general. It’s not the Weezer I started listening to but it’s still amazing stop hating because it’s not “classic Weezer” I say classic Weezer is the evolution of Weezer and that’s amazing you have to respect Rivers’ writing ability. Stay safe and have a nice day.

I haven’t been too much of a fan since after “Pinkerton” and “Pork and Beans” was the last song I liked from them. But finding out the release date has been pushed back a year right before the original release date is not cool. Looks like a glitch in the upcoming new releases section and I’m frankly tired of seeing this as one of the top upcoming releases.
With so much music at our fingertips these days, bands can get phased out by even the most loyal fans.
Weezer, do the right thing and just release the album.

Yes, they could’ve released this album now while their fans are stuck inside! And yes, they could’ve likely come up with an entire new album between now (May 30, 2020) and when this album will be released (May 7, 2021). But no! We can see where Weezer’s priorities lie; instead of giving this to their fans in a time of hardships, Weezer chooses that what is more important is for them to attach the release of the album to a tour once coronavirus restrictions have eased. In other words, they clearly care more about the financial success of the album & tour than they care about spreading a little bit of happiness to their fans during this time. SMH!!!

Why are people writing reviews for an album that doesn’t come out for another SEVEN MONTHS? Seriously iTunes, why bother with “reviews” if it’s just a bunch of people that either love Weezer enough to like ANYTHING they put out, no matter how it sounds for 5 stars, (they call themselves “True Fans”) or disgruntled fans who want another Blue Album or Pinkerton, and give everything that doesn’t sound like those albums, 1 star? Can’t you at least wait to allow reviews until people are actually able to hear the album? I’m giving 3 stars just because I haven’t heard anything besides one song, and I wanted to demonstrate how ridiculous it is to review material that nobody outside of the band themselves has heard.

Well, Van Halen would never have had a song like this, but okay, it's got guitars and drums, so that's something. The production is too crisp and clean for both Van Halen and early Weezer. I think they got the message that no one liked the black album, and so they really have turned it around so far with this one. Sounds like they added classic rock/metal but preserved own trademark alt pop sound as well. Few bands could pull that off I think. This song sounds like OG Weezer mixed with 80s rock/metal-ish and it rocks. I liked their previous alternative albums, but they struck gold with this
