I know about TOOL - I don’t live under a rock - but this is the first record I’ve ever listened to by them. To be honest, I haven’t really been a TOOL fan... but commenting on this album is futile. Good luck trying. Words just can’t. No kidding. Give it up, do yourself a solid and just listen to it.
On a whim I bought the album last night and thought to give it a quick preview before bed (hoping to listen to it properly in the morning)... well that wasn’t possible... it pulled me right in and kept me up till 3:30am... just had to finish it. So I listened to it again this morning and it sounds even better! Melodic and catchy, but hard, serious, passionate, masterful work. It takes you on a spiritual journey... I’m hesitant at first...it’s kinda dark, but somewhere inside all that insane pounding rhythm and extra terrestrial tone you begin to trust where all of it’s going, then you’re rewarded with groove leading into another groove building up to the next impossible groove that finally brings you to tears of appreciation... and brings you gently back down just long enough to recover for the next song, which does the same thing all over again.
In my opinion this work of art is way above the line of what we’ve become used to in modern music. It’s real and spiritual, it’s not sugary nonsense. It’s like a reminder that the truth is still out there in the desert, quietly maintaining it’s strength, getting tugged on by the chaos in the world until finally it has no choice but to come out of hiding and shine. This is a sonic gift from another dimension pulling us back out of the muck of today's musical mediocrity. Finally some muscle is back to do some of that heavy lifting some other artists seem to have forgotten about. This album must have required so much time, patience and grind to make.
I don’t agree about the comment someone made on here that Maynard has given up on his band. That couldn’t be possible if you really heard this. In his voice and words, he sounded serious about all of it... like a shaman deeply focused in a healing ritual.
I’m grateful for the majestic effort each band member put into this experience, and for each band member the word “GENIUS” is well deserved. Maynard sings passionately, just the right amount... then sits back and let’s the instruments assault our senses with magical mathematic precision.
From the sound design side of things, the sonic mastery from start to finish is indescribably good so I’ll just stop talking now.
Put aside an hour and a half, don a really GOOD pair of headphones and you might never want to listen to Pop and mainstream Music anymore.
