You're kidding me right?!?? What's with all the comments that this is not good?
We are lucky to have bands like this still producing great stuff with all the crap being thrown at us from "so called artists".
The idiots trashing this have not bought the album obviously. This is amazing. Just let it play, every single song is incredible.
Money well spent.
Didn't think I'd find another complete album that I like as much as "Sound of Madness", but I was wrong.
This is on that level.
Money well spent.

This is not like the other albums by Shinedown. When I first heard this album I was dissapointed in it and thought to myslef, this is not Shinedown.
I really enjoyed all there albums up to this one. I hope they get back to the style they use to be with there earlier albums.

This is a great album, better than Amaryllis, almost as good as Sound of madness. Saw them live performing music from this album, best show of the year, better than Five Finger Death Punch.

I hardly gave Shinedown any thought until I saw them this year on tour with FFDP. Totally blew me and my family away. I thought they put on one hell of a show and were much better live than FFDP. After hearing songs from this great album, I explored the previous stuff and liked it just as much. I've bought 10 different songs since the concert after having none. Bands have to change it up to remain relevant. This is an awesome band. To stop being a fan based off one album is rather short-sighted. To complain they don't sound like they're previous albums is illogical.

Best album ever- better than Sound of Madness ?
Love the more ballad style music vs the simple screaming that some rock groups are in to.
Songs have heart and meaning.
-Videos are cool too 👍

Gone are the days of Sound of Madness. This is pure radio pop music with one or two rockers thrown in. This band used to be a no nonsense hard rock force. Now, much like post-grunge counterparts Nickelback, they are release albums for the sole purpose of getting rock AND pop radio play. The soul of the music is gone, and Smith's powerful roock vocals are wasted.

I love it!

Why does an amazing song appear on a horrible album? I was hoping for something amazing, seeing as how good Cut the Cord is. However what I get was something with nothing else that doesn’t make me yawn in boredom. These guys were one of the first metal bands I heard and instantly became a fan. This isn’t the Shinedown that I know and love.

Another great album!

I think it's funny that people keep on and on about how much they don't like there new sound. They evolved. In order to continue to make great music you have to. Some people want the old shinedown sound back. Brent was doing $2500 worth of cocaine a week plus pills on top of that. Now he is clean and doesn't have to write about the horror that's in his head. His kid saved his life. Now shinedown is more successful than ever. And the funniest thing about all of it is that they are more successful now because of the people that still like there sound and the people that "don't". After all you people that don't are still buying there albums.

I've been listening to their music for about a year or two now and they just changed their whole stile of music. Shinedown was made of pure rock and believe me there is some rock in this like cut the cord but it doesn't match to their past. This is like a new brand of pop that Shinedown was never known for. I hope there next album will actually be rock and not this disappointing pop.

I don’t get all the comparisons to Nickleback. Nickleback rock harder than this. I loved Shinedown. I own multiple records of theirs and have seen them multiple times in concert. They were one of the greatest American rock bands out there. They took a huge step down with this album though. Too generic. Too slow. Too poppy. Where’s the angst? Where’s the emotion? Where’s the dynamic rock sound that you had basically trademarked? I hope it returns or you will have lost a fan with this new crap.

I'm a big fan of Shinedown, and this album isn't bad, but it's definitely not like the stuff I love of Shinedown. There are a couple tracks like "Thick as Thieves" and "Misfits" that bring me back to their old stuff, and I think that those two are great, but other than those, this album is pretty much lacking in what made Shinedown's music unique and awesome.

This album is ok, it's definitely a decent effort but not on par with previous Shinedown offerings. Amaryllis had soul and substance, and had excellent riffs and instrumentation. This album sounds as if it was built in a computer, rather than on instruments.

I have never liked every single song on an album before! People who complain that Shinedown no longer has the same sound clearly have cotton in their ears. There is a great mix of different sounds in the album that make every song unique and meaningful, which is something that not many artists can claim. I’m so glad that these guys have evolved into such amazing artists!

This band had a great distinctive sound that you always think of when you think about their music like Creed does for example. This album is good for poppy rock music fans I suppose but this just shows another example of how true rock music has died and I don't think it'll come back

No band is ever going to satisfy everyone which is evident by some of the reviews out here. I love each and every one of Shinedown's albums as the stand alone entities that they are and this album is no exception. Plain and simple this albums rocks. It's more of a throw back to the days before all the over production on studio albums. It's refreshing. I can't wait to see what they have in store for us in the future. Until then, I'll continue to rock out to this album and the others.

This is good effort from Shinedown. It has hint of what they are know for. However at the same time, it is new and yes more poppy. There is nothing wrong with change but as a guitarist, I need to ask...what happened to Zach? I feel like the guitars are extremely buried in this record. Also, I feel that the record is a miss when it comes to its lyrical content. There seems to be no mysterious and deep lyrics. So yea this album gets a three from me. It's not terrible, but it's not phenomenal.

I normally pre-order from bands I like but didn't for this one. I waited and saw iTunes dropped price to $7 so I went ahead and got it. Honestly wish I never did, I only like 1 song on it which is "Dangerous". I feel like they listened to Top 100 Pop hits of today while writing this album. Songs have repetitive lyrics as the chorus and it's just not what I've come to like from Shinedown... Big disappointment

I have to admit that I felt kind of the same as other reviewers in regards to the band losing their beginnings and caving into the mainstream. When this album was released in 2015, I bought one track and really kinda tossed the rest out. Until I saw them live last night and really heard the songs. For me, it may not be the same material that they cut their teeth with but a band has to evolve in some way or they sound like everyone else or the songs keep repeating themselves. After giving this a second look and experiencing them live, I really short changed them. I don't love the entire album, but after last night, I do love most of it.

Man this review section has to be filled with the biggest group of whiners I have ever seen. I own every Shinedown album and I fail to see how this one is so terrible in contrast to all the others, or how Shinedown "sold out" or "became too mainstream." Yeah it's not the exact same style as Leave a Whisper but do you not want your band to change at all between 2003-2015? Threat to Survival may not be quite the album that Sound of Madness and Amaryllis(two amazing albums) are, but it's still Shinedown and doesn't deserve all the hate it's getting.

Bought this album a week ago and love the first time I listened to it. After listening to it for about a week now, I've realized that all the songs sound the same and there's no unique beat on any of these songs. I wish they could revert to the "Leave a Whisper" album again. Ever since the "Sound of Madness" album, Shinedown has slowly transformed to main stream radio artists. Hate to say it, but they are going down the same road Creed and Nickelback went down.

I can't remember the last time I was this disappointed in a new album. That said, Cut the Cord didn't set the bar very high. It's a shame these songs are so bad, because Brent's singing is still great. I still love his voice. But everything else is a major letdown. Threat to Survival makes Amaryllis look like a masterpiece. Although I did actually like that album.
Also I hate Brent with short hair. He needs to grow it long again.

To the people that are like “Man they soldout, I wish they would play stuff like first two albums that was great” First of all, you’re stupid. If soldout means they want to put out a record and have it be successful then sure I guess they did. And second for those of you so in love with the first two records, It’s not the same cooks in the kitchen as it was back then. Only Brent & Barry were in the band for those. Zack came after Us & Them. Eric came in during or after The Sound of Madness I believe. The same band that produced those two records isn’t here now. There are different minds at work. Plus, why would they want to make the same music over and over? Do you eat the same dinner every night because you loved it the first time? No. And they don’t want to make the same music over and over because what would be the fun in that? They have the passion to make something new and exciting and we should eat it up and enjoy it. Is this album like the rest? no, and that’s a good thing. Sorry for sounding so harsh but, When all is said and done, you need to tie your tongue cause when you spit on everyone ,you were arguing and now you’re asking for it. For those who are loving this album, you know where that’s from ;)

This isn't the Shinedown that we've come to know and love. They've had crossover success with songs such as 'Second Chance', but with Threat to Survival, they've simply crossed over. The only song on here that reminds us of their previous efforts is 'Cut the Cord'. The guitar is gone for the most part, and instead replaced with the dreaded electronic sound. What we're starting to see with efforts like this and Halestorm's latest album is that commercial rock isn't good enough in the eyes of labels and producers. We've reached an unprecedented time where genres can't exist. Everything must sound like the boring, generic, pop/alternative stuff dominating mainstream radio. Threat to Survival won't stand the test of time and will soon be forgotten as it lacks any sort of originality or depth. Shinedown's only hope is to go independent and I believe they need to go in a different direction at guitar. Jasin Todd's absence is noticable and a band is as good as the lead guitarist is. God save rock 'n' roll.

What happened to the guitar driven rock we've known and loved for years and years? They say that they don't want to make the same record twice. Well they haven't. They took away what was was a great thing and commercialized it into a pop album.
It's like when Coke decided that if they changed their formula, it would appeal to more people. Not just the people that already drank it. So they stopped making the original and started making "New Coke". And it sucked. The faithful hated it and new customers did too. So they figured out that new coke wasn't the right thing and switched back. Brent, Barry, Eric and Zack, please bring back Coke Classic.
I've seen you live 8 times. I own every record. Some in multiple forms. While lyrically this album is strong, you took it to far in commercializing it. I'm giving it two stars because Asking for it and Cut the cord are solid.

Album is kind of a letdown

All in all, the entire album was kind of diappointing. Lyrically, I definitely believe it has its strengths. However, the music is generic at best and fails to showcase their skills as musicians in any way. This in turn hinders the presentation of the lyrics and it feels unemotional all in all. I'm all for a band expanding the musical capabilities and limits, and I admire Shinedown for attempting this. However, when expanding your limits is having the opposite effect, maybe you should reconsider your approach.

Disappointing

Shinedown songs have turned generic and poppy. They lack the feeling and depth the earlier stuff had. They need to bring back Jasin Todd, he contributed so much to the Shinedown sound, Zach Myers just doesn't cut it- no imagination, no uniqueness, guitar playing is subpar. Brent's vocals have kept the band going but the songwriting is suffering so bad now and the song structure is so horrible that they are hard to listen to no matter how well Brent sings.

Before I say much more, I get the aspect of trying to evolve and change your sound, that is great. But this album....wow. I have been a Shinedown fan since my JR high days when their first album dropped and since then, they have been my favorites. The first albums without a doubt were 5/5 stars and fantastic. Album 4 (Amaryllis) was a bit different, but overall it was still alright. However this album, it doesn't even sound like the same band! I was shocked when I went through the tracks the first time.....it was straight up pop and pop-rock crap. What happened to the band that put out Leave a Whisper and Sound of Madness? This album doesn't even sound like it came from Shinedown to be quite honest. While evolving sound is great and everything, you usually maintain some themes and sound that made you what you were. Instead this album took the past and destroyed it and came back as a pop band at best. The Shinedown of the first 3 albums is gone and if you’re like me and are a huge fan of those, you will HATE this album and wondered what happened. However I won't bash anyone if they like this stuff, that is great. It just isn't for me. Hate to say it, but if this is the direction Shinedown is now going as a band, they have lost me as a fan and this will have been the last album I buy from them.

Can I get my money back?!

Well, the writing is on the wall... Nickelback must've provided them with their Map for Success cuz this album is all about the Benjamins! Ughhhh...another one of my heroes bites the dust, preparing to head out on the Denomination Assimilation Tour! I love bands for originality and playing from their hearts...call it creative honesty. Anyone whom has followed Shinedown over the years knows the music and the lyrics were always born out of both truth and feeling. I'm sorry but if I knew you when you were real I can see right thru you when your not. Don't get me wrong... it's good music to somebody and I'm sure every Nickelback or Taylor Swift fan will probably go crazy over it. But for us older fans that appreciate the original Shinedown all I can say is thanks for the memories. I understand success has its costs...it's just sad when those costs are being genuine and loyal. Good luck on the tour, my wife and I won't be in attendance.

I have been looking forward to a new album from Shinedown for a long time now. When I finally could here their new songs, I was just disappointed. Half of the songs weren't interesting enough to finish the sample and a few of their songs could have been much better, but they kept repeating useless lines. And its something that they did in every song this album.

Not the best album i've heard.

Before i review the album i'd just like to say that those of you who write a review before the whole album comes out are not the brightest of people. So you don't like the single, okay. That doesn't mean you won't like the rest that you haven't heard yet. In my opinion there should not be any reviews written before an album comes out. Whether good or bad.
Now, for my opinion of the album. It's not my favorite Shinedown album. I don't think they'll ever beat The Sound Of Madness. But it's still a decent album. It's just that none of the songs really jump out and catch my attention. But that's just me.

Was curious what this album would sound like. It definitely sounds closer to Sound of Madness than Amaryllis. I loved both of the previous two albums and appreciated the creativity and lyrics they gave us in each of them, and they've done it again. The amazing thing about Shinedown is that they can bring you so many different sounds and they are all amazing. I've been a fan since the Leave a Whisper album and have not been disappointed since. I see people complaining that they are "changing too much". Well, we all hate Nickelback because they gave us 6 albums that all sound the exact same. Shinedown has given us something unique each and every album. I already love Threat to Survival and definitely recommend purchasing it on ITunes and CD. Thank you Shinedown for always being original!!

Sounds like they have the same song writers as Fallout Boy now. I like FOB and I loved Shinedown. but I enjoyed them for different reason. Really doesn't sound like a rock band anymore.

Ode to Shinedown

I've seen a lot of reviews from people that don't like the direction that Shinedown is taking, saying that they sound like Imagine Dragons or going down the same road as Nickelback and having a more radio friendly style. In my humble opinion I think Shinedown is doing just fine. Who really wants to listen to a band that puts out the exact same every album. A band that can evolve their sound is definitely a great thing and of course people are going to say they are selling out but they would also be the first ones to say something bad if they never changed their music from album to album. Some are just not happy no matter what. Shinedown is one of those bands that will go down in history as one of the greatest of all time and the path to something so great will always ruffle the feathers of jealous people. Keep doing what you're doing Shinedown, you are hands down putting out the best music out there!!!

This isn't Shinedown

They might as well go under a different band name now. Nothing on this cd resembles '45', 'save me' or 'sound of madness'. I know all you "artistic" fans will say "they are evolving and la la la". At the end of the day, Shinedown had a great unique sound. A sound they could have kept and still been artistic instead of writing for the radio to get paid and justifying by saying it sounds different. Unfortunately, we have another Nickelback. Also, Sound of Madness was the last record that Jasin Todd (original guitarist) had anything to do with. I guess we're seeing the impact he had and the void he left.

Major letdown

This album took several steps backwards, from the momentum built with Sound of Madness, and Amaryllis. There are a few catchy and solid songs here, like "Asking For It" and "Dangerous", but it overall felt like it had too much of a soul sound. Here's hoping Shinedown goes back to a more Rock sound next time.

Slipping into mainstream

Let me start by saying that I absolutely love Shinedown, but besides cut the cord, which is currently my favorite song, this album seems to be a little too mainstream. Shinedown seems to of lost their hard-core-ish and unique edge. The last thing I ever want to have to say about this band is what I'm currently saying about disturbed, breaking Benjamin, and slipknot is "yeah they're alright but I like their old stuff better". I want to see this band put out another album like sound of madness. I love the intensity and complexity of that album. Most of these songs sound really similar. Again, I LOVE SHINEDOWN, but I hope they don't go all Michael bay on us and just start doing this for the money and airtime and album sales. I want them to turn around from this and go back into their old direction which is separate from today's all to prominent mainstream "pop-rock". I understand people change as can groups of people, I just want to see it for the better. I know shinedown is fully capable of blowing everyone out of the water when it comes to originality and flat out dramatic songs. This just wasn't it.. This is a 5 star band that just made a 3 star album. Maybe next time.

A Revolution

OK! I don’t normally write reviews for album, because most albums are either generic pop pieces of crap or rappers that aren’t near as good nor will ever be anywhere remotely good as they think they are. BUT! This is about the amazing new record that Shinedown just released, and their is a reason I gave it 5 stars. Every song on this album is about something real. Like the name suggests, it’s about survival. And every song is different and has it’s meaningful moments and can throw all the punches it needs to, and that makes it stand above the in crowd. I’ve bought a lot of albums this year for my job and listened to them front to back, no stop. But no album has captivated me as this one has. Shinedown come back from a prolonged silence to unveil a masterpiece that does not fail to deliver. This is what Rock should be. Not what is has turned into. This isn’t pop and it sure as heck isn’t rap. So get those notions out of your head. THIS IS ROCK! And this in my opinion, will be the best album release for 2015.

I hate giving this 3 stars!

This is VERY disappointing because Shinedown use to be in my top 3 favorite bands, this album just doesn't sound like the Shinedown I love that sang Fly From Inside, I Dare You, Sound Of Madness, Bully, etc..... They made the same transition that Pop Evil made and that would be to try and fit in with other so-called "rock" bands like Maroon 5, Imagine Dragons, and One Republic. Its too bad because they use to be so catchy and their lyrics were so powerful and now its all bouncy pop rock tunes. I like Cut The Cord (the only TRUE rock song), sorry Shinedown I just can't get into this!

EPIC / PHENOMENAL / OUTSTANDING

You like the old Shinedown? There’s hints of that in here too. You like how the band changes and evolves with every album and grows as a group? JACKPOT. Not only does this album rock the socks off of Rock, but it delivers everything you could ever ask for in an album and is not the same thing released in the first 4 albums. Shinedown delivers everything and appeals to all the senses. Lyrics, vocals, and head banging feeling yourself madness are all present, and in full power nonetheless. If you haven’t purchased this album yet, you are truly missing out. Waited years for this album and it surpassed every expectation I had of it.

Fantastic! The Song "State of My Head" is the best 'going into battle' song ever. I get chills when I listen to the words. I've played it 20+ times and it still gives them to me!!!
Every song is great!

It's not heavy enough TO TRULY BE SHINEDOWN.

Sorry, but it's true.
Oblivion and Cut the Cord are the ONLY TWO- barely, mind you- heavy tracks on this album.
I was so excited and so let down.
Not bad overall, but hate that they're trying to cater to everyone instead of doing their old sound.

Threat to survival is a fitting title

This album is a threat to Shinedown's survival. After hearing Cut The Cord I had high hopes and even pre-ordered the album, but after listening to the whole thing I'm very disappointed. The biggest problem is the lack of real instruments. Gone are the riffs and sounds of real guitars, they have been replaced with electronic orchestration. (Is it just me or are Brent's vocals auto-tuned on these tracks?) I really hope Shinedown isn't abandoning their hard rock sound just to appeal to a broader audience. I just hope that they take these reviews into account when working on a new project.

Repetition

First of all... This doesn't sound like shinedown. The vocal effects are a. Present, and b. Terribly poppy.
I've also never heard so much repetition used in their transitions... It sounds like a bad cover artist on the voice trying to make their version unique.
What the hell shinedown? Too much to hope that you'd nail it like Breaking Benjamin did!

This sounds like pop

Well, it's a bit too early to tell if this CD will meet the expectations of hardcore Shinedown fans who cut their teeth on Leave a Whisper & Us and Them (my personal favorite Shinedown CD) so I need to hear more but at this point I am not too impressed. I get it, musicians get older and their experiences in life affect their music but all too often the “label” gets in the way and they become pawns. Brent promised the fans this CD will be beautiful and brutal. After listening to the four tracks, my personal opinion is it is neither. Staying with their first two CD’s.

Fading fast......

Pretty soon they won't even need a guitar player. Engineered poppy dance rock. Such a bummer. I was really hoping after amaryllis they'd head back in the right direction but this seems to be going further away from what made them great. Since they came out They've been one of my favorite bands. Didn't buy amaryllis. Probably won't buy this either.

Cut the Cord sounds close to their Sound from Sound of Madness and had given me a slight amount of hope for this album after what they did with Amaryllis. I will say that Amaryllis had 1 maybe two decent songs but the rest fell short. This album seems to continue in that same direction. Black Cadillac and State of My Head sound really poppish and honestly don't really provide any interest for me. I would love to hear something closer to Us and Them or their first album. Giving this two stars just in case the rest of the album turns out ok. (Best of hope for it!)

It just sounds like an amaryllis continuation. They lack the riffs and the soul that they had in their first ablum. Now they just take generic crap with Brent Smiths vocals, slap the Shinedown name on it and it sells.

Shinedown has done it once again. With their new album, they have created a new curve in the path of their musical progress. As versatile and the range of music they can perform, this album goes with a more aggressive feel.
In this current moment, only Cut the Cord is released. The hit single has generated a profound effect, creating a different feeling and style of music. That is what Shinedown is, a band that wants to change it up every album. Doing something different, not being generic, and not being the same. And, you know what? They do it well.
With their fifth establishment to the fans coming out soon, it's time to understand why they chose to have a different vibe. I have listened to all of their albums, and I have yet to decide on a favorite one regardless of how different each one is. I will be waiting in high anticipation to see how they rolled with the changes on this one.
Cut the Cord was brutal, aggressive, tied with a profound message. I expect the album to match up in its own elements, and wrap it together beautifully as a whole.

After hearing scores of boring, simplistic, and narrow minded songs that seem to dominate the airwaves Shinedown have proven that they can be relevant and create quality music that is more mature and grounded than their past efforts. 10/10 would preorder.
